Millie, the fees are one and the same. BCDH obviously has the contract with Wiltshire Council to kennel strays, which is why Ludo was taken there. Many councils do the same - quite reasonably, they can't justify the cost of setting up and staffing their own kennels.

SPA please be aware that many rescue homes get large discounts on the food they purchase, so they could buy approximately double the amount of food that you've given them after you've converted your cash donations to food. Best to talk to them first.

Looks like Wiltshire DW is in line with bcdh fees too http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/communityandliving/publicprotection/animalwelfare/straydogs.htm

Glad he's home safe, breaks my heart when I do my daily checks on various missing pet sites...sometimes it appears animals can just disappear into thin air :-(

In fairness, the local Bath dog warden is lovely and will scan and contact the owner if possible before it gets taken to the home. On the occasions where local flyers have not got a response I've taken lost dogs to Bath Cats and dogs Home, but only after local posters and feelers have gone out, along with a photo and info to BCADH, often keeping the dog for 1 or 2 nights; until they have a space. (Don't want to get done for theft do I?)

The first thing I've seen BCADH do is scan, or if they are taking them in overnight, inoculate them.

If at work we are donating to the Home, we transfer cash to food.

However, depending on the day of the week, we could accommodate a found dog for 1 to 5 nights (BA1 - sorry, there are some breeds I wouldn't take on, due to hamster in the house)and have offered this service before, but this would depend on finder looking at this site.

On this occasion I guess the finders were not doggy people, so did the best they could when finding him. Dogs are priceless, so a fee to get them back is minimal compared to the relief of finding them.

A small price to pay to have my dog returned I would say. Disc with details of owner would have saved all this. If road traffic accident had happened due to dog being out there would be much bigger bill to pay!!! Glad dog is now safe.

Here is a breakdown from Baths cats and dogs home website...

I've lost my pet

Stray animals are handed into us by dog wardens and members of the public. We hold them for seven days but if they have not been claimed after that then they will be signed over to the Home and eligible for re-homing.

To find out if your lost pet has been handed in, please call our reception on 01225 787321.

The Council impose a £25 fine which you must pay before claiming your animal. We also charge for the kennel space, food and care of your animal. The charge is a one-off £10 admin fee plus £12.50 kennelling fee for each day.

We recommend that you microchip your pet to enable you to be reunited quickly and easily.

And from doglost's point of view.....Whilst some may think this is a lot...its not. The money charged helps to pay for the valuable dogwarden service and kennels so they can keep operating...and as shown by the amount of missing dogs on this site its a service well needed...To avoid these fees invest in a collar and tag ...which is the law. Many councils will impose an extra £50 fine for not having a tag on your dog....and from experience commercial boarding kennels charge more for kennelling a dog....and as MillieW states...it is a stray if its not with you.

So your dog took up kennel space which could, instead, have been used to help a genuinely needy dog and you're whinging ?! This is the reason that people like Dogs Trust do not take in strays from the council.

Yep they and dog warden charge as soon as a dog is handed into their care, I think dw is a fee of £25 and then boarding per day on top. Any dog handed in would be classed as a stray as that's what they are...they have strayed from their home, its not a reflection on you and how he's cared for :-)

Ludo doesn't look like a stray & I'm sure he wouldn't have looked like one after being missing for a day, I've stayed at B&B's cheaper ;-) - important thing is I guess, that he's home...
