OK, another update (sorry, it's tricky when you haven't actually seen the dog yourself) The dog was a whippet or small greyhound. Not a collie/lurcher. It was not quite black, more grey, with white markings. Several people saw it in the Cadishead area on Thursday. Nervous, sore/rough paws.

I suspect that, as my friend originally thought the 'whippet' he'd seen was my dog (who is whippet/collie/greyhound cross)that the dog in question might actually NOT be a full whippet. I don't think it's Zoe, but it may be this one, picked up by dog wardens over night. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=704456486236482&set=a.254087917940010.85460.253038551378280&type=1

It's a long shot but, how big was the whippet? Could it have been a small greyhound? Zoe http://www.doglost.co.uk/dog-blog.php?dogId=55392#.UgQBjJK1HzM would possibly fit this description and has been missing for ten days from Runcorn (20 miles, but in a straight line in 10 days that's not unrealistic). Thanks for any further information

Hi - I have seen your doglost posting about your whippet (I just shared it with a friend in North Wales actually) And yes, thanks, I got your text. I've forwarded it to the friend of mine who saw the whippet this morning. He doesn't think the dog he saw had a collar on, and he did say it had quite a bit of white on it.

Hi Red Monkey, I have sent you a pic of our missing Whippet, She sounds very similar to what you have seen. Did she have a pink / white collar on?

Picture was sent to your mobile if you could say yes or no that would be great, much appreciated.

Thank you

update: sighted returning back towards Irlam on Liverpool Road at 9:15am. Paws look sore - she may have covered some distance.
