Thanks for that answer-is this going to change when chips are made compulsory (the cynic in me says it depends who is getting the money from fines for unchipped dogs...)? I too would have thought scanning a dog for a chip would be the first thing a DW would do, given the time and money that could be saved by taking the dog straight home rather than driving (fuel £££) it back to the council kennels then housing, feeding etc. Just seems like a lack of common sense on the part of the council. At least these guys are reunited, safe and well.

At the present time there is no legal requirement to scan a dog for a chip! Although to save the council money (kennelling fees) it makes sense to do so. Petlog are offering every local authority a free scanner. Only problem with these are they can only be charged up through an USB unless you buy an adapter. Not every DW has access to a computer!

did the council give any reason as to why they do not 'routinely' scan dogs (surely if you're going to scan any breed it's going to be a high-value breed such as a Frenchie?)? Is it due to lack of scanners, lack of manpower (not that scanning takes much), lack of willing?

That's great news, so pleased these 2 are safe x

Bit worrying that they were not scanned though!

Lizzie and Willow are home. They were both handed in to the Boston council and a large fee had to be paid to get them back. Neither of the dogs had been scanned and when asked why the owner was told "we do not routinely scan dogs" Have no idea how they ended up in Boston. Owner has promised to do some fund raising for Doglost and will be in touch with me at a later date.Last edited: 2013-08-19 15:25:50 by AlisonH

Now spoken to the mother of the owner. She is looking after the dogs for her daughter and cannot understand how they have got out of the garden as it is very secure but it is in a remote location and not overlooked so doesn't think they have been taken either. The property and outbuildings have been searched. She has reported them missing to the dog warden and police and is about to call the local radio station to put out an appeal. Friends and neighbours are out searching the fields right now. Photo is being emailed to me asap.

Called owner but had to leave a message.
