- jobadger. I see your point but hopefully everyone will see the logic in compulsory microchipping.
- 2013-09-20 22:42 jobadger
- Lovely write-up in the Daily Post (hard copy) tho' a great pity they used a beardie's photo............
Whilst I agree that compulsory micro-chipping will assist in the return of some fluffy family members, it will only work in association with compulsory scanning - by vets, councils and rescues............Last edited: 2013-09-21 07:42:05 by jobadger - 2013-09-20 18:47 NickyB
- so glad that microchipping will be compulsory - it will make so many many more happy endings

- So happy to see Pero back home with his family. I have friends who own Border Collies, and as long as they are getting the necessary exercise they make good pets. I actually walk a Border Collie for someone myself, and the dog has made the owner a very nice pet. I make sure the dog has plenty of exercise though too. Pleased Pero is being "Chipped" Stay safe now

- Pero's on the front page of the Daily Post's website. http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/local-news/dog-went-missing-llyn-turned-6068609 I have no idea where the DogLost quote came from, but it certainly wasn't me !!!!!

- So delighted that Pero is safely home!
May I take issue with Ellies Comment of the 4th Sept that working dogs NEVER make pets? This is a sweeping and incorrect generalization as I have had over 30years a number of ex-working collies who have made wonderful pets and do still have four at present. - 2013-09-20 06:35 hayley

Border collie Pero found after his photo is put online
Pero the sheepdog
Pero was reunited with his family after his image was posted online
A sheepdog missing from a north Wales farm was found 140 miles away after his photo was put on a website for strays.
Seven-year-old Border collie Pero was seen being driven off in the back of a van after a couple claimed they had found him lost on the Llyn peninsula.
He was found three days later beside a busy road in Bolton, Greater Manchester, and handed to a vets surgery which posted his image online.
Owner Margaid Roberts said: "We've just been very, very, very lucky."
Mrs Roberts said one of her daughters collected him from a dogs home.
She said: "He was looking very sad but then she called his name and he just jumped up."
She said neither Pero nor the family's three other working dogs have collars in case they became snagged on fences.
The organisation Vets4Pets put Pero's picture online after they found he was not microchipped.
The Roberts family said they will now have Pero microchipped.
Microchipping will be compulsory for all dogs in Wales in 2014, with owners given until 1 March 2015 to carry it out. - 2013-09-19 23:47 Majorjet (Jan) - Area Co-ordinator - Liverpool/Merseyside, North West
- Great the media have followed this brilliant story up. x

- I think the important thing here is Pero is home where he belongs. Whatever happened to him and however he got to where he was found this could have been a very different outcome. Lovely reunited pictures.

- Wonderful news. Thank you DW for that excellent piece - well worth knowing. Ellie & NickyB, we are all on the same side and sharing our views is always good to give us different insights - look what we have already learned on this now, myself included. Thank you. Let's see what's on the BBC website.......

- Glad Pero is home and it infuriates me when dogs are taken out of the area they are found but some well meaning people do not know what to do, it would be interesting to find out exactly what the finders said to the staff at LDCH. Just for info here is an Extract from the Stray Dog Guidance from DEFRA - There is no statutory definition of a stray dog. However, any dog found in a public place, or private place where it should not be, which appears to be without its owner and not under the control of its owner or a person representing them, may be seized and detained as a stray dog by an appropriate person.
Control of Dogs Order 1992 -
Wearing of collars by dogs
2.—(1) Subject to paragraph (2) below, every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it.
(2) Paragraph (1) above shall not apply to—
(a)any pack of hounds, .
(b)any dog while being used for sporting purposes, .
(c)any dog while being used for the capture or destruction of vermin, .
(d)any dog while being used for the driving or tending of cattle or sheep, .
(e)any dog while being used on official duties by a member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces or Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise or the police force for any area, .
(f)any dog while being used in emergency rescue work, or .
(g)any dog registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
If a working dog is not technically working (ie driving sheep at the time) then should it be wearing a collar and tag? this could be open to interpretation and I doubt any case law is available on the subject due to the lack of enforcement on this piece of legislation.
I am not criticising the owner as mistake do happen but just putting this out here for info. - 2013-09-08 13:34 NickyB
- the lesson learnt is if you allow a dog to stray face the consequences
- 2013-09-07 16:52 Jayne - Founder Doglost.
- Nickyb first...um its 28,000 reunited dogs....and I understand your point.
Ellie I also understand your view point.
Yes its infuriating when people pick up dogs and take them out of the area...yes its also infuriating when owners don't have ID on their dogs....but at least someone did put the dog in a car and it was not involved in an RTA...
BUT doglost is here to be non judgemental and assist in these situations as indeed we did....finders and losers alike will learn from the examples we as helpers set. - 2013-09-07 16:12 Ellie

There is no way that I have condemned all the kind people on Doglost! I don't know how you have come up with that!I help on here myself with postering locally and trying to do what I can. I was merely making a statement that working dogs never wear collars and you as a countrywoman should know that! The whole object was to try and educate people that are unaware that working dogs do not wear collars, to understand that if a healthy happy dog is found in a very rural place, especially if it is a working type dog then the odds are that is what it is , a local working dog who knows exactly where it is. I have read about it here on Doglost time and time again. Yes they are well meaning but what it actually takes is good old common sense. Especially in Wales where farmers own many acres of land and their dogs roam freely with little problems until of course a 'well meaning' person comes along and that is when all the problems start as in this case of Pero. As for me being naive - I don't think so! I am most certainly, as a country woman born and bred myself, aware that stray dogs, stray, being the all important word here, do get shot. However in the case of Pero he was not a stray dog, he was a working dog who for his own safety was not wearing a collar, who was on land that he apparently visits often, not far from his home. These are the people that cause a lot of heartache to owners whether you like it or not! Well done for all your good work in helping these dogs, I really do admire that in you and all the other wonderful people here on Doglost, however the facts are that working dogs do not wear collars, not because their owners don't care or are not bothering but purely for the sake of the dogs safety. Which brings me back to the original point that I was making. - 2013-09-07 13:13 NickyB
- ellie its u being naïve to condemn all the kind people on doglost who have helped to reunite I believe 8000 dogs.as a countrywoman born and bred dogs loose in the countryside are shot by farmers which by law they are allowed to do.finding a stray dog several times myself they have always been in excellent condition. however with an id tag unlike you I have absolutely no idea where they are from - hence I take them to vet to be scanned take them home notify wardens/doglost etc & take care of them until reunited. if they are not they stay - hence I now have 5 dogs.......
- 2013-09-07 11:58 reggiemollieros
- Such good news that Pero has been reunited. Thanks to Doglost for liaising with Leigh Cat and Dog home and the fact that they (LCDH) post found dogs on their website has resulted in many more reunited dogs. It is great that this happens I just wish more of these places and councils would get on board...one day I hope x

- AND WITHOUT NAIVE TOWNIES WHO PICKED UP A WELL CARED FOR HAPPY DOG WHO WAS NOT FAR FROM HOME AND THEN CALLOUSLY AND UNCEREMONIOUSLY DUMPED HIM IN BOLTON, CLEARLY NOT GIVING TWO HOOTS WHAT THEN HAPPENED TO HIM, PERO WOULD NOT HAVE NEEDED DOGLOST OR ANYBODY ELSE!
- 2013-09-07 09:16 NickyB
- WORKING DOGS OR UNEMPLOYED DOGS WITHOUT ID TAGS ARE LIKELY TO BE PICKED UP BY WELL MEANING PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO SEE A STRAY DOG AND WE WANT TO REUNITE IT WITH ITS OWNERS. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT WITH NO ID TAG AND NO SCANNER..............
WITHOUT DOGLOST PERO MAY NEVER HAVE BEEN REUNITED - LIKE HUNDREDS OF OTHER LOST DOGS - 2013-09-06 17:51 Kimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders

Working dogs never wear collars so therefore cannot display addresses or phone numbers. Working sheepdogs are normally kept together in outside kennels and are known to fight with each other. Under these conditions a collar could cause more injury. Working terriers don't wear them either as they could be the cause of them getting trapped underground on tree roots etc. Working Spaniels are also prone to getting caught up in bracken and scrub so it is a safety precaution to have them collarless.
In the case of Pero, he was clearly cared for and knew exactly where he was. If the finders were genuinely concerned about him then they should have looked closer to his home. In Wales, these dogs do tend to roam sometimes, and most farmers are aware of their neighbours dogs. Yes a microchip is the best idea for these dogs but people that don't understand the country code aren't always helpful either! - 2013-09-06 09:16 ClaireC
- Wonderful news to read. Stay safe Pero xx

- Brilliant news! Another miracle dog! So wonderful to read this. We don't really know how Pero came to be taken from the beach, or why, but the fact that he is home is totally, totally amazing! I would have hoped that if someone found a stray they would put up e.g. "found dog/ collie" posters with finder's number on, at the place dog was picked up. Just in case. Collars are always advisable but can come off, so always a good idea to advertise a found pet as well. This is a truly amazing story and worth a media page in Wales I think! Well done to all. x
- 2013-09-05 19:38 NickyB
- there is a no no no on doglost site to microhip tag or tattoo id. if pero who is now microchipped (permanent but invisible unless u have scanner)had been wearing a collar with his address and phone it would have saved him, the finders and the owners a lot of trouble. the old fashioned ways are often better - my 5 rescues all chipped but all with home details. some of us cant leave an apparently stray dog and mean well in taking it.we are not to know anything about it. personally over 20 years have spent hours with apparently lost dogs - and wished they had their home details on the tag.

THANKS a MILLION to his family for the update and sharing the photo/s with us. Will have great pleasure in sharing them with his story.
While I was in the Speke branch of the vets who registered him with DL discussed PERO with them and they are also great at helping reunite pets with their family. HATS OFF to the vets for caring.
The more that register with us the better it is in getting missing pets home. xxx

- Lovely email sent to DL Admin from a very happy family:
Thankyou thankyou thankyou for helping to find Pero! He's now home safely thanks to you. He's being microchipped tommorow! We've got 3 other sheepdogs and they we're also over the moon to see him. He cried and liked my hands when he saw me at the kennels and jumped up in joy continuously!!! He's been helping with the dipping of the sheep this morning and been to the beach this afternoon!! The story is magical!! We will send you more pictures of him with all the family.
We live in Llangwnadl, on the Lleyn Peninsula so its a miracle that we found our dog that was taken 150 miles away!!
Thankyou ever so much!!!!
All our love,

- So pleased Pero is home. The person who took him probably thought he was a pet who was house trained etc. Working dogs never make pets (it's a different lifestyle for them altogether) so I guess they realised this and then promptly kicked him out! - WOW amazing, well done to everyone who has helped reunite PERO back with his family. Great Team work. I've uploaded the photo of him in Leigh Cats & Dog's Home. So pleased he is now back home and will be getting CHIPPED.
If anyone finds a dog and takes it home it is so important they also contact the Council DW from where it was found and not just where they live. Have come across this happening a few times on DL and another reason we say try further afield when searching.

- Yes, indeed. This is exactly what happened in this instance. Pero knew exactly where he was on the beach at home and has a very loving home to which he usually returned every evening. - Yes - I've been helping them all weekend to look for him. His name' s Pero. They've been going out of their minds trying to find him! Many visitors vist the area during the summer and this has happened to other people as well. Many thanks for your help and for putting him up on here or we would never of found him. Greatly appreciated.

- Rang the owners this morning. They have contacted Leigh Cat & Dogs home and are sending further pictures through to them. Hopefully they will be able to collect him this afternoon. It seems he was picked up by someone who thought he was a stray on the beach Friday afternoon -- the finder said they were going to take him to be checked for a chip. Unsure how he has ended up in Bolton but fingers tightly crossed it all goes well and he can go home later today. xx
