Yay! I'm so happy she's home. Since seeing her on Sunday I've been thinking of her all week and hoping she would be found I've even driven round that area a few times this week looking but the clever girl got herself home. Fantastic!

As I was typing this Sybil obviously decided a mass search wasn't on and made it home!!!! BRILLIANT!!!!!

If Sybil is nervey she may not be showing herself much during the day.
Here is what I would be doing. Think scared dog. Check areas on map of habitation (proximity to other dogs and water/food - people often feed hedgehogs and foxes - she could be sourcinng these things. Favourite places to look are culdesacs backing onto waste and woodland. Same for parks. Police working nightshift often report stray dogs coming out at night after 12am, when its quiet. Get a team of people and go door to door in these areas with posters.
I would also lay a urine scent from place lost in the park straight home. Urine should be from human dog is most closely bonded to. I would spray footwear and start of trail and drop urine soaked cotton wool balls at corners/junctions.
As others have said checking under brambles, ditches, cars etc and in outbuildings eg barns is helpful, as a scared dog often does not respond to owners call.
Are there any favourite copses she used to head for to hunt bunnies? If so systematically leave a favourite well scented toy and see if its been moved/picked up.
If you are not at home, leave a crate in front garden that has toys, water and blanket and keep it open but covered so if she returns she can have somewhere to go.
You actually need to have a marked up map of places you have searched - OS is ideal and also add in mobile burger vans in area as they may discard food or she may approach a van if hungry.
I would try local radio, TV, poster all local dog clubs and vets within 10 miles. Free ads in Friday ad and local parish magazines/flyers.
I can help you search from Sunday PM or distribute flyers. In the meantime, always carry a picture of her with you and actively ask everyone walking in the area.Last edited: 2013-09-13 11:25:02 by starlapps

GREAT NEWS - Sybil is home!! Nick left the gate to the garden open overnight and this morning, there she was :-))) Thanks so much everyone for all the help and support.

there were loads of travellers camped very close to where she was last seen but don't know if they are or were there on Sunday. There are woods all around Tongdean lane and over the London road around withdean park. Withdean stadium and the pub there are good places for posters and withdean park known as the 'puppy park'with lots of dog walkers. Patcham area and up through surrenden to Ditchling road are very possible routes for her. Maybe you could get her on heart radio or in the Argus.x
lappy
yes extend area for posters - put up in garages and supermarkets. Dog lost can advise on scenting technique:)
keep walking Basil near where she was lost and last sighted, yes if he barks she may recognise. was she lost on a walk - would she be familiar with route home - if lost from a walk where she was driven to start - then take car back and park up with doors open. Look on Dog lost for collie crosses found in area etc as not everyone familiar with breed. Lappies are resourceful and IME go to ground - so she could be laid up in woods etc

Certainly don't give up yet. Really saturate the area with posters.
I would consider laying a track. From the place she went missing to her home. Maybe some experienced track layers on here could contribute the method? If not, I'll post what I would do....may not be gold standard though, so ideas welcome.
I would also get your lappy to bark excitedly in the favourite walk places nearby.
infindigo
And don't give up hope yet. Lappies are clever dogs and she could still find her way home. Dogs often turn up long after they went missing. Don't think she has necessarily left the area - they often turn up right where they disappeared.
infindigo
I would say keep putting up posters - widen the area as she might have wandered a long way by now. If you have a travellers' site nearby, ask around there as she might have gone in looking for food. Keep in touch with the council because if they find deceased dogs they don't notify anyone, but just cremate them and no one ever knows. Go out at night and call her as she might be afraid to come out of hiding in the daytime when it's busy. I wish I was close enough to help.

hello! She lives with another lappie called basil. We are using him too to try and find her. I have called RSPCA, Dogs Trust and Dog warden and the vets in the area. Also have contacted the police. is there anything else we should do? Posters are up. Im just praying that someone finds her safe and sound but running out of hope.
starlapps
Is Sybil attracted to other lappies that are calm? If so a concerted effort to look in wooded areas nearby where there is a source of water may be a good idea. Is there anything that SE owners and lappy folk can do to help you.
Sturner69
Hello. This is one of my dogs and I would like to thank you all for your help. I was only told she was missing yesterday from my former matrimonial home and I am devastated. We have been out to day putting up posters in the area and in the shops. Please keep looking as she means the world to me. Thank you again

have just walked up from Hove park with my 2 labradors via Woodruff ave checking out all side roads, bushes etc as I went up then along Dyke road to Tongdean lane with the intention of walking down to the woods by withdean stadium. Unfortunately my dodgy knee started playing up so had to turn round. I walked back via Onslow road, hove recreation ground and the Droveway. Had a good look around Hove park just in case. Spoke to a dog walker who is in the area every day. I didn't see a single poster. There is a also a dog walking business called dogslife based in Woodruff ave may be worth contacting. As lappy says posters are so very important for bringing in sightings. My printer needs ink or I would get some done. Sharing on facebook x

There are lots of businesses along Tongdean Rd - don't forget to ask them to display a poster. Also, look in possible hiding places like under hedges and any other small spaces she could be hiding.

cannot stress how important it is to saturate area with posters and consider wide radius - as you will be surprised how far they can cover. what are circumstances - if on walk and familiar ground she may return, if unfamiliar will cover ground in search of family. the posters are really important
angi
there are a lot of woods in that area behind the sports centre and around the rail line so hope she stays away from that. If she gets across the london road a load of travellers were camped there last week after being turfed off waterhall. Not sure if they are still there. The park there is very popular with dog walkers so a good place to poster. I have no car at the moment or I would drive around looking.x

It was me that sent the comment to dog watch. We saw your dog about 3ish in onslow road yesterday, she wouldn't come to us and kept running off. We drove round the block looking for her and also looking for anyone who seemed to be looking for a dog but nothing. We drove down Tongdean lane and saw her again but once again seemed so scared she didn't want to come to me and ran off again, I tried to follow but lost her so that was the last time I saw her so probably about 3:15 yesterday. I was thinking of her last night :( I also looked again today while driving in that area but nothing. I really hope you find her soon x
Lorn
Please check Brighton Dogwatch page on Facebook it sounds like this dog was spotted heading up Tongdean Lane towards Dyke Rd. The person tried to approach but dog very nervous.
angi
I live right next to hove park so will look out and if there is a picture I will put up posters if she is still missing? x
