I hope these few notes may help others who have lost a dog. It goes to show that posters, leaflets through doors, the help of kind and generous strangers, and a huge element of luck can result in recovery. It also highlights a major mistake which very nearly made finding him at best much delayed and at worst impossible.

Our problem was compounded by the fact that he is a rescue guy who had been mistreated, which made him very nervous and suspicious of people he doesn’t know, so sighters had little chance of enticing him to come to them.

Day 1: Lost him at about 1300. First posters went up late that afternoon in the immediate vicinity.

Days 2 and 3: Search continued. More postering and A5 cards given to dog walkers and anybody else we encountered.

Day 4: First sighting at 0700 by a lady who did not know he was missing but just happened to mention the following day to her sister (who had seen one of our posters) that she had seen a stray dog. So at least we had an idea of the direction of travel.

Day 5: Seen at about midday by a lady who had seen a poster, but had not noted the contact numbers. She drove back to the poster to obtain the number. By the time I got there it was an hour or so after the sighting and despite following his direction of travel there was no sign of him. More posters put up and started posting them through peoples’ letterboxes. The latter seemed a bit futile since we could cover only a tiny percentage of all the houses in the area . . .

Day 6: I left my car near where he was last seen and decided to walk the couple of miles back to where he had gone missing in case he had decided to retrace his steps. As I arrived I received a call from the owners of one of the houses we had leafleted saying that they had seen him a few minutes previously in their garden. (MISTAKE: I was a 45-minute walk from my car. GOOD LUCK: I had a friend in the village who was in and able to give me a lift back).

There was no sign of him, so I randomly set off down a footpath. My phone rang – a lady who was driving along a nearby very busy main road had seen him 30 seconds earlier crossing the road and going into a field. (OUTSTANDING GOOD LUCK: of all the hundreds of cars that travel that road Bertie had crossed in front of that of a person who had one of our leaflets with her; and I was just five minutes away).

In a field of long grass surrounded by dense woods, after a few minutes of whistling and calling, Bertie appeared, seemed to be considering whether or not I was safe to approach, decided I was ok - and that was that.

Welcome home Bertie, nice to see another reunited furry friend.

Haven't been able to stop smiling all afternoon! I was driving around looking for him, literally just up the road from where he was found, when I got the call to say Bertie had been caught and could hear him in the background so, so excited!! So pleased for Bob, Cheryl, Bertie and his goldie "brother". I would have turned the car around and come back to meet you, but was running late for an appointment. Please give Bertie a big hug from me - when he wakes up :) Would love to see a reunited photo too x
BobMH
We will be going round removing all the posters today and tomorrow and we have called everyone who gave us sightings as well - without all of you we would never have found him. He's had a good meal, water and is now fast asleep. THANK YOU... will send a reunited photo!

I went out looking as my dog need a walk and informed Bob that is what I was doing,Bob text me to say Bertie had been sighted 30mins before, so I headed to my car to go to that location.
Whilst sat in my car and about to set off, Bob called me and said he had been found, SUCH GREAT NEWS!
Ronniedog
Thrilled to bits for you and yours Bob - and Bertie of course!
Shereen
Brilliant!..Welcome home Bertie...Well done to all involved, and the sighters quick thinking!
BobMH
YES HE'S HOME! Thank you to each of you for your endless patience and support for us both. I can honestly say that we would probably not have managed it without you all. The lucky break came when he was spotted running across a main road by a motorist who happened to have one of our leaflets in her car. She called straightaway and thanks to an earlier sighting Bob was in the vicinity and went straight there. He found Bertie sitting in the grass looking at him, and when a treat was thrown towards him, he came straight away and Bob put his lead on. When he saw me he jumped up tail wagging - you could almost imagine him saying 'that was a long walk - can we go home now?'.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
ClaireC
Barney & Ozzie's Mum has just telephoned me to say THAT BERTIE HAS BEEN CAUGHT. Don't know any further details, but I am sure the owner will update. Such wonderful news. One off my list. Stay safe lovely Bertie as its not a safe world out there on your own. xx
ClaireC
Thanks for the call this morning B&O's mum, as I said, and if you are able to join me I will have a look up there on Monday and Tues IF Bertie hasn't been caught by then (do hope he has though). Good luck for today. C'mon Bertie show yourself please.

Well done everyone! Keep going!
Pink comments are probably accidents, Barney & Ozzie's mum. I actually thought you were pinking your own comments for some reason :-) Sometimes, especially with mobiles, the button is getting hit accidentaly when people read or write posts and its reporting the page. I don't think it is us. I will check.

Also, do you know of any ponds/streams in the area where he could access water? Could be he's staying close by..
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
Setting off shortly myself. There is a little carpark/picnic area just off the A404 where you turn left for Winchmore Hill if you are coming out of Amersham. Is it possible to walk up the hill from the carpark? It's just that I've been looking at the area on streetmap and there seems to be a small wooded area expanding up towards Coleshill...
BobMH
going to do posters in Amersham today - and will do Tesco. Its the charter Fair today and tomorrow which doesn't help. I think we already have a poster at Hazlemere Crossroads. good idea re Waitrose and Tesco though. I did speak to a courier today but he isn't local and is rarely in the area, although he said he would keep a look out..
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
How about asking the delivery drivers at Tesco Amersham and Waitrose Beaconsfield to keep a poster in their vans in case they see Bertie? I've noticed that both companies deliver in the area. Also, perhaps the petrol stations at Amersham Tesco and Hazlemere Crossroads would be willing to display posters?
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
Any reason why my comments are being moderated??
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
I will make sure to look out for you both! I will be driving around in a blue Hyundai Coupe. Will probably park near the cricket pitch and have a nosey in the woods.
BobMH
Thank you! you may see me - I will be the one walking around with a very tired golden retriever (he has walked his feet off in the last week)....

BobMH
Very disappointed. left food out last night + scenting and returned at dawn this morning and stayed there until 8 but no sign of the food having been eaten or sign of Bertie. so I will be out postering again today and have got extra family drafted in for leaflet dropping. Will also walk the route where we saw him yesterday and trying to remain optimistic. thanks for all the tips - can't thank you all enough.
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
Good luck with your search today. Is there anywhere near the church yard that you could just sit quietly and watch from, perhaps whistling quietly to see if he appears? He might feel braver if you're sitting still rather than moving about. If he does appear, just have some tasty treats handy that you can throw his way, gradually drawing him closer. Just remember not to make any sudden movements and have a slip lead handy that can be put over his head. Fingers crossed xx
BobMH
We've gone out tonight to leave food in the churchyard. Fingers crossed.
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
He will stay there if it is part of his triangle. By that I mean he will stay on that route. They run a bit scared/confused for a bit then get into a routine of a triangle route. So he is probably fine now and adjusting until you get him. Whistling is fine, if its what you normally do he will recognise it, but, he may not respond immediately. He is in survival mode so he will think like his instincts tell him - this is a good thing as it keeps them, well, surviving. It also means he may not react to your voice or even seeing you, as quickly as normal. He may need a little more time to process that it is in fact you. This is all normal and perfectly fine, so do not worry. If you see him, you will know from his reaction whether he is running scared or recognises you. He may well come bounding over. You really never know. They never forget your smell so scenting in a safe area is good. Not all over or you will get him running all over and confused, but in significant places, or even to lead him somewhere i.e. back to a place he knows if not across any roads etc, or just to keep him at e.g. the churchyard. Play it by ear so to speak and any probs let us know and we can guide you, as can some of the good helpers who are posting on here. You will get him. x
BobMH
Will check if the churchyard can be contained as that could help. Just hope that he doesn't stray away from this area.
BobMH
I have been whistling for him as I've been walking around. What do you think about whistling for him - he has always responded to whistling in the past but I'm wondering if it might be scaring him off in his current state?
BobMH
Only just got in from leaflet dropping. Thank you to everybody who helped searching today. We ,are really feeling so much more optimistic now. Thank you for advice on scenting and have left pieces of his blanket round where he's been seen and in the churchyard. Will do more tomorrow and I will be at the churchyard early in case he comes there again. Also will leave food out behind house where he was seen today.
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
Do we know if the churchyard is fully enclosed? Just wondered if he could be contained in there by a gate or something if he's seen in there again? Not worth the risk of scaring him off to another area though if he has another escape route.

I have just got in from searching the woods and fields at the back of the church and also the fields that go from Coleshill down to the A404. I have also spoken to everyone I saw while driving around the village, to look out for him. Fingers crossed for tomorrow...
LindaT
Great that you have sightings ... fingers X`d that Bertie will be home and safe very soon.
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
Okay, I've just read a bit more. Is Bertie's route forming a triangle yet? This triangle will be his "home" until you get him. So put out food & water as in below post, in one of these areas, a safe area. If it keeps going then we see who's eating it and if it's Bertie we can get him without chasing. Do NOT chase, just watch, monitor & call owner. Owner, if you can scent as per instructions around this lady's property it will also help keep him coming back to there. If you need anything and we are not replying on page (local co-ords are currently out searching for dogs also) please call the DogLost number for assistance. Let's get your Bertie home! x

Good Luck to those out searching xx
Ronniedog
If we can get a scenting dog out, then I would almost definitely be able to get permissions for scenting to take place in the fields behind the Squirrel and up to Winchmore Hill which are all part of Penn Street Farm/Estate (I know the Farm Manager, and it's right next to where my horses are - I'm, fairly confident they'll be OK with it. Farm Manager is a "dog" person himself.) As per our conversation earlier Bob, I'll give you a ring when I've finished at work today and will join you in your search tonight.
BobMH
We have had another sighting. Lady called me to say that her sister saw him yesterday morning at 7 coming out of Coleshill Churchyard and then going back into the churchyard. At the time she thought someone had called him but then saw the poster today. This also sounds promising as it starts to narrow down the search area somewhat.
Bertie doesn't know this area at all so we definitely need to some scenting. Bob is there at the moment walking the paths between Winchmore Hill and Coleshill. Thanks Barney n Ozzie's mum - we have the scenting instructions from admin.
Thank you all for continuing to search - your support has meant so much to us.
thank you Suziespringer for offers of help too and positive messages....
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
This does sound promising Bob! Does Bertie know the area? Could he making his way to somewhere he knows? Might be an idea to do some scenting in the field (if the farmer doesn't mind!!) If you haven't had the scenting instructions from admin yet, I can email them to you when I get home from work. As it's raining now he might be holed up somewhere nice an dry until in stops. Fingers crossed xx
Suziespringer
Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that I walk in common woods - opposite the mayflower pub hazlemere, where the horse fields are twice a day - I am a keen runner/cyclist , and I have been keeping an eye out. I have also posted on Facebook and others have copied too. Please let me know if I can help this end of the woods. I will be doing long runs over the weekend so again with my springer so I will keep looking. I really hope I can help you find Bertie!! I have list my springers numerous times so let's keep positive :0)
BobMH
we have a potential sighting. A lady who lives at the Old Queens Head in Winchmore Hill, has just called me. She thinks she saw him from the back of her property running across the field towards Coleshill. If this is right, then he has crossed the field from behind The Squirrel and headed up through Winchmore Hill. As soon as we have a more detailed view will update as we will start searching in a different area. And putting up more posters in Winchmore Hill.
paulinewestiefan
Hi Bob spent some time searching in Penn wood this morning met 2 dog walkers gave them the posters and asked to spread the word have posted Hazlemere cross Rds where I can shops not always willing to display them I work as a receptionist at the x roads so getting the word out locally I called in to my vets who had already been given the small leaflets left them with a couple of large ones they said they are talking to there patients owners and spreading the word we need a sighting so we know what area to search hope Bertie is found soon my thoughts are with you at this trying time Pauline
Vanessa
Hi I live at Pennwood Stables and our land runs along side the wood we are all keeping an eye out for him and I'm going for a walk in there later and will look out for him. Also the people who live in the mobile homes and caravans along the A404 are fairground people and are very nice and helpful. The site manager lives in the first mobile home on the left. We are riding in Common Woods this morning which is opposite and will ask dog walkers we come across to look out for him
ClaireC
Hi it is the farm manager that Ronniedog is going to make aware. You could email a poster to the Travellers Liaison Officer i think High Wycombe Council as he/she may go on their site. Worth asking.
BobMH
I have updated the poster now to say black and white. But in the leaflet drop we are saying that he is likely to look very dirty - he was filthy when we lost him.
BobMH
Thank you so much. I will give you a call tomorrow would really appreciate your help. Also your advice on what other places he may be as there is a possibility that he was at The Squirrel after we lost him. My wife is printing leaflets at work tomorrow but I will also print more posters myself and I will see if I can catch the men cutting the trees during the day.
Ronniedog
No news from me tonight I'm afraid. Walked Ronnie in the eastern part of Penn Woods again but no sightings and saw no other dog walkers. Just a thought - if anyone can get there in the day time, it might be worth asking the people doing the tree clearance to keep a look out too. Or maybe if the men aren't around, leave a poster under the windscreen wiper (or something like that, because I'm not sure if the machinery has windscreen wipers!). I can't get there in the daytime due to work, but I could run off a small number of posters at work and do this tomorrow evening if it helps. Also Bob, I'm still happy to join you in a local search if you'd like. I'm free from about 6.30pm onwards, just as soon as I've checked the horses (I'm the lady with the horses in the field behind the Hit and Miss). Phone me on 07768 340413 if I can help. I assume that Michael and Mary at the Hit and Miss have been made aware? And it's their son who is Landlord of the Squirrel. I will make the Farm Manager at Penn Street Farm aware also. In answer to Barney and Ozzie's Mum, yes the traveller's site is still there, and yes, there is a regular car boot sale along that road.
BobMH
Car boot sale is definitely on as we passed it on Sunday And the travellers site is still there although its more permanent mobile homes now but also worth postering there. Will try searching dawn and dusk from now on as well Will change the poster tonight too.

We're going to start a leaflet drop tomorrow to the houses that border Penn Woods and also Penn Street. It helps keeping so busy.

Claire - you mentioned the estate manager -would be that for Woodrow House? We were planning to cover there as well.
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
P.S don't forget to change his colour to black and white x
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
You are doing all the right things Bob. It is very common for dogs on the loose to venture out at dawn and dusk, when it is quieter so he could be holed up somewhere during the day. Are you able to search at those times of day? Now you have posters up, hopefully some sightings will start coming in. Make sure you have some posters near Penn Street school - kids often love to get involved and they themselves will in turn help to spread the word. If someone has taken him in and decided to keep him, you need to make him the hottest dog in town! Is there still a car boot on the Wycombe to Amersham road? Would suggest asking if you can put posters on windscreens of cars there. Also, is there still a travellers site on that road? Posters strategically placed nearby would be good too - especially as they mention a reward. Totally got my days mixed up this week - I won't be over that way until Friday, but will definetely have a good look around for Bertie if he isn't home by then. Stay strong x
BobMH
Thanks for all the suggestions they are on our list for tomorrow. Getting really worried with no firm sightings so far and so many people helping with the search. Also going to try local press. Can't thank you all.enough - the support really does help.
ClaireC
You could also put a poster in the local Royal Mail Sorting Office for their postmen to keep a lookout, especially the early morning ones. Any farms nearby that delivery milk ie local milkman. Local Florists when delivering might spot him Also Three Counties Radio (apologies but don't know their Tel number) and likewise Mix 96 (01296 393396) might put out a missing dog bulletin. You may be asked to email into Mix 96 and in which case, go onto their website. This particular radio station is usually pretty good at putting out a missing animal request. Also ask friends, especially those who live local, if they can put a poster up in their car of Bertie. You would be surprised how many people are drawn to a car poster. Good Luck xLast edited: 2013-09-18 17:39:50 by ClaireC
ClaireC
Never a nice task to do, but please check with the Highways Dept just in case he has been knocked over and they have picked him up.

Ronniedog, you may recall the name of the Estates Manager nearby there for him and/or a poster to be got to him just in case Bertie is seen around there now. This would be the Estates manager when we were all looking for Tripp at the time.Last edited: 2013-09-18 17:20:45 by ClaireC
BobMH
goog point on the colour, we will change it and describe him as black and white. local dog warden is aware he is missing. thanks for suggestions re the trap, and postie and bin men if we get just get some sightings ... I have spoken to all the local rescues and vets but so far no luck.
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
Forgot to say that on your description he is down as a blue roan, but from his picture I would describe him as a black and white cocker. This might make a difference when you're ringing around places to check if he's been handed in. Is the local dog warden aware he is missing?
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
I have just spoken to my dog groomer and unfortunately she doesn't have her trap any more. She suggested trying the RSPCA as sometimes they lend them out, or I would suggest contacting Doglost Admin as a local coordinator might well have one. Bertie will be really hungry by now, so might well be brave enough to approach someone with food, or hang around the bins at local pubs, schools, etc. Also let the local postie and bin men know he is missing.Last edited: 2013-09-18 11:38:16 by Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
BobMH
Also, for information, i talked to Petlog who hold his microchip details. We paid for their upgraded service where they alert local vets and 'animal professionals' if you let them know the dog is lost. turns out they only notify those vets that are signed up to their scheme. Not necessarily a problem but they don't make it clear in the information they send you urging you to upgrade your registration.
BobMH
Thanks again everyone for continuing to look. And thanks to Barney n Ozzie's Mum for offer of dog trap - could you ask her - it could be helpful if we get that far. Assuming we find him, he will be difficult to catch. Have checked all the rescues and other contacts this morning but no news. Will go to Wycombe Heights golf club for their assistance. Also preparing a leaflet drop for houses in Penn Street today. Although he is mostly white in his body he was very dirty when we last saw him and could well be more brown now than white.
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
Bob, I don't know if admin have emailed you the information sheets yet, but try leaving an item of old clothing with your scent on it at the spot where you last saw Bertie. This should give him something familiar to help keep him in the area. Does anyone local have a trap? I'm seeing my dog groomer on Hammersley Lane tomorrow and I know she used to have one. Do you want me to ask her? It would have to be checked very regularly though.
Working Cockers Rock
Hi, took my cocker for a walk in Atkins Wood and Angling Spring Wood In Prestwood and Gt Missenden last night, kept a look out but no sign over this way. Will keep an eye out on every walk. Hope he turns up soon!
jillhughes
I was out looking for him last night at Beamond end of Penn Woods but no sign. Excellent postering though. Fingers crossed that today will be the day he is found.
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
Bob, Bertie could well be hanging around any of the nearby pubs scavenging for food, so make sure they are all well postered. Also, don't be surprised if he runs away from you if you spot him. Make sure you have some nice smelly treats with you and just throw them his way, avoiding eye contact and just speaking quietly to him. I expect you already know this, but others out looking for him might not. One other thing to try, providing the weather is dry, would be a disposable barbecue and some nice smelly sausages to try and lure him in.
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
It might be worth notifying Hazlemere Golf Club as well as they're not too far away. A couple of years ago a dog went missing in Hazlemere and was found to have been hiding out on the golf course. The club house were extremely helpful at the time.
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
I will be over that way tomorrow afternoon, so if Bertie still hasn't been found, I will have a good look around with my cocker boy, Barney.
BobMH
Ronnie, thank you so much for looking in Penn Woods - if it was Bertie that this chap saw then that is progress. We did have our other dog with us (retriever called Rowley), to be honest I don't remember a deerhound but we passed loads of dog walkers on Sunday. we will be walking in the woods too tomorrow and keeping up the posters. Also planning a leaflet drop to the houses in Penn Street.
Pauline - thanks for offers of postering, we have contacted vets at Haslemere and Crossroads in Amersham/Chalfont/Chesham and will contact the Beaconsfield vets tomorrow.
Ronniedog
Bob. We walked around Penn Woods this evening from the start of the bridleway near the cricket pitch (where we saw your poster), to the far end of the bridleway, turned right and back down on the church side of the woods - unfortunately no sign. We did meet a local chap with a Deerhound who say's he sees you and Bertie and your other dog (a bitch - Dottie I think he said?? - I hope he's talking about the right person). Anyway he was aware that Bertie is missing and is keeping an eye out too. He mentioned that he had seen Bertie running in the woods yesterday, but had thought nothing of it at the time as he was unaware until today that Bertie was lost and he recognised him as a local dog. So we at least know that Bertie was still in the woods yesterday. I will keep an eye out on here for updates and if there's still no good news, I will walk Ronnie in Penn Woods again same time tomorrow evening.
BobMH
Thank you for all your offers of help - just knowing that you are all out there looking out for him is such a great comfort. And thank you for all your suggestions of further places to contact, I also will do a poster drop around Winchmore Hill as we haven't covered that area yet. Bertie was a rescue dog and although we have made great progress with him, he remains very nervous initially with new people usually barking excessively for a few minutes. My feeling is that he is likely to run away if approached and may also bark a lot. One possible clue is that we heard a dog barking at The Squirrel pub but by the time I had got there it had stopped and there was no dog to be seen. Thank you for the offer of meeting at 6.30 tonight - can't do it tonight as after another day of searching I have had to go to work but if you are planning to be out later in the week thursday or Friday that would be fantastic.
Ronniedog
I am in the nearby area every evening with my horses and walking my dog. Will happily keep a look out for Bertie. Is Bertie likely to come to or run away from other dogs (my own dog is completely "other-dog" friendly)? I would also be happy to join any search parties. If the owners would like me to meet/help at all from 6.30ish this evening please let me know. Sam
Unknown
Have spoken to owner they are going to try and update later. They would really appreciate all your kind offers of help. Bertie is a very nervous dog so sightings would have to be called straight into the owners. Please not to be chased. They have contacted all the correct authorities, vets, chip co, dog warden etc. They have all ready been out for 18 hours postering hard. Have offered extra advice. thanks for all your support and owners please keep positive you doing an amazing job looking for your boy. Lets get Bertie home xx
jillhughes
I live in Amersham but walk in Penn woods. I could go looking tomorrow if that would help. Also happy to do some postering. I hope he comes home soon.
paulinewestiefan
I live in Hazlemere let me know if I can help put up posters etc. have you contacted the vets at Hazlemere as dogs are some times handed in there Hope Bertie will be home soon where he belongs please e-mail me if I can help ? PaulineLast edited: 2013-09-16 17:13:55 by paulinewestiefan

Sorry to hear about Bertie - I am very willing to help as I live in Loudwater, but am going on holiday to Norfolk today for two weeks. Can help on my return if still not found, but hopefully he will be. Alert local vets, Straid in Beaconsfield, Wheelhouse in Chalfont St Giles and Crossroad in Hazlemere. May be worth alerting Wycombe Heights Golf Club as Penn Woods eventually leads onto the golf course if Bertie is heading South. Ensure that Wycombe to Amersham to Beaconsield and back to Wycombe well postered as this triangle surrounds the woods. There is a Spar shop in Tylers Green and quite a few pubs there too. Good luck!

I used to live near here, but unfortunately moved away last November. A couple of places to check incase he's handed in - Green Meadows kennels in Chalfont St Giles (used by the Police if they pick up strays) and Maccabee kennels near Princes Risborough (an old neighbour told me her dog was taken here by the dog warden, rather than Stokenchurch Dog Rescue). Also, as the schools are now back, see if Tylers Green First School (on the green) will display a poster or two - preferably near the gates. Get as many posters up as possible. Woudl also be worth notifying the pubs at Penn Street/Winchmore Hill, incase he's come out of the other end of the woods - The Hit or Miss? Hope your gorgeous boy is home soon x
