  • Where Found Crumble was shot by our next door neighbour farmer, a disturbed and nasty individual. He was crossing a field belonging to the farmer next to our house.
  • Date Reunited
  • Other Info There were a few sheep in the field. Crumble was never interested in sheep. They bored him. The farmer had threatened me before. It's the saddest day of me and my children's life. The farmer didn't bother to tell us he had shot our dog. We found out from the emails sent to shoots. Someone had heard someone crowing about a spaniel being shot. This farmer was the only possible suspect. It proved to be true.

So very sad to hear about Crumble. RIP sweetheart.
sallybee
Deeply shocked and saddened to read this horrendous account of poor Crumble and his family. The impact for the family must be truly unbearable and so sad the children have not only lost their beloved pet and family member but will grow up remembering this nasty evil man who destroyed their family, and who lived next door! Totally avoidable!!!!!! I do hope the Police look at this individuals actions particularly since so many people can now account for not one, but several dogs he has taken delight in shooting. What kind of human being does this and then brags about it? A lowlife of the worst kind........mentally disturbed perhaps, but one who will reach the gates of hell whilst we will all look on and laugh! I am so sorry to Johndoig and family and wish you comfort with your wonderful memories of your beautiful boy xxxx

Very sad to hear about Crumble, poor baby boy :( Thinking of your family at this sad time xx
RIP handsome xxx

This is not the place to be discussing farmers. I happen to be a livestock farmer, with pet springers, who is terribly upset about Crumble. My heart goes out to Crumble and his family and basically I think that is what we are all trying to say and words seem totally inadequate.
Trish & co
Poor Crumble you did not deserve this RIP little one. One evil farmer who thinks he is above the law. We have a farmer near here, He breeds partridges then releases them & a group of local men belong his shoot. He has told me & some other dog walkers who walk down the lanes where he has released these birds that if they go onto his fields (ploughed fields)he will shoot them, So basically he is saying we cannot walk down this lane unless our dogs are on a lead, He does not own all the fields on this lane, But we don't no which are his & im sure his partridges do either .
Nanni Byron
Esther, I was not labelling ALL farmers - just those, like the sick and despicable one, as you stated, that do not think twice about shooting a stray dog/animal that crosses their land even if no harm was being done to livestock. I am fully aware of how hard & exhausting it can be caring for livestock during cold hard winters but that was not the point in question. I am a dog/animal lover that feels sickened that this awful thing has happened and my heart goes out to the bereft owners of Crumble and others this very same thing has happened to.
NeilofMarlow
Words fail me. Just disgusting. So many evil *******s walk this planet. Such a beautiful dog. RIP.
BBKM
So sorry to read this. Another trigger happy farmer who seems to think he is above the law... well I hope you rot in hell, MURDERER, you are not worthy of having animals in your possession. Mad sick individual you are.
I know my rant will not bring back Crumble but I feel so angry, there was no need to for him to be shot.
RIP handsome lad, run free at the bridge xxx Sending comforting hugs to Crumble's family xx
Unknown
Esther. I dont really think that all farmers would have acted like this one. People are just upset, and angry because a family including children have lost their beloved pet, and apparently Crumble was nolt the first to be shot by this farmer. A friends collie once went missing, only to be found rounding up a farmers cows (Not sheep) Lead back on dog, and an apology to the farmer who was very good about it, and found it amusing. Jjust instinct in the breed I guess. I certakinly would`nt "Tar all farmers with the same brush"
DogLostreggiemollieros
So sorry. Heart breaking for you and your family. Not least of all the way you found out. I do hope there is a thorough investigation. RIP Crumble you were very much loved and taken too soon xx

Nanni Byron. How sad you label all of us who farm as being as sick as the despicable person who shot Crumble. Perhaps you would like to spend some time with us caring for our livestock throughout the winter 7 days a week and explain how we have no compassion. We also have springers, I hope Crumble is playing with all the springers already mentioned plus 4 of my beloved spaniels waiting for me at the bridge.Last edited: 2013-10-17 18:40:17 by Esther

Bring it on sooner rather than later! - farmers think they have the god given right to shoot anything they choose if on their land! No compassion at all - not a jot do they care! First to complain when things don't go their way though!
My thoughts are with Crumble's poor family cos he didn't deserve that. X
Unknown
Would like to send lots of comforting (((((HUGS))))) to the family of Crumble Have fun with George (Springer Spaniel), and the four Springers mentioned below. To that farmer "What goes around, comes around" One day you will get your comeuppance; bring it on.

What an absolute evil ba****d, hope this farmer gets all that he deserves. I too would let the local press know and any local shoots too. This man needs bringing to justice, sorry we could not save you Crumble but you have not died in vain xxx
Tigermouse
This is absolutely heartbreaking, Crumble and his family didn't deserve this. I hope the farmer concerned gets his just desserts one way or another - and that's putting it mildly!

devastated to read about Crumble - can't say on here what I really think about this despicable act. I am sure the family have wonderful memories of Crumble that are special to them and that no one can take away. digbysmum
Oh no, how absolutely heartbreaking. That farmer needs to be brought to justice for such an evil, despicable act. He most certainly should not be in possession of a shotgun, especially if he is a disturbed individual. Poor, poor Crumble didn't deserve this - words fail me. I am so very sorry and my thoughts are with Crumble's family at this devastating time. Run free at the bridge beautiful Crumble where my four springers will be waiting to play xxxx
Unknown
If as you say this person is disturbed, and a nasty individual then he must surely hace some issues (Mental health problems), or thinks he is "Billy the Kid", and is "Trigger happy". One day you will see Crumble again, never to be parted. Hope the visit from the boys in blue to this farmer has a satisfactory outcome for the family. Keep us posted.
SuePower
So sorry to hear your news. I hope you get some justice and i hope the farmer suffers a very long, lonley and painfull life. He should at least have his licence taken away...horrid man (im being pleasant)!!!
LisaMell
Completely devastated for you. Words fail me.....I would suggest that this person needs his guns confiscated and some possible medical intervention.Failing that a prison sentence and then let me collect him on my own when he comes out.How can this be allowed to continue? Crumble was no threat.Go to the press and let them hound him for an explanation into this despicable act.Civil action if the police don't prosecute.? Sorry...I know it wont bring dearest Crumble home but so very very angry for the family. Please don't tar all farmers with the same brush. Most of them are wonderful and help us lots looking for our lost dogs. This is just one who would be better off locked up and the key thrown away. Rest now dearest Crumble xxxxxx

I have received a voicemail and email back from a sergeant in Kent police after expressing concerns on this case. The officer has spoken with owner and has said that another officer will be making a visit to him this Saturday to answer any questions he has.
I have bumped this back at request of SM
DogLostSpringerMad - Area Volunteer, East Sussex
The update from the owners makes harrowing reading.

CJ is there any way that you could BUMP this page, as the latest information should be made as public as possible. 4 dogs destroyed by the one farmer. There are alot of local people on doglost and they need to know where it is safe to walk their dogs.

I cannot believe that there is no evidence on Crumble that he was in contact with the sheep, and that he thinks he can just get away with it.

Thank god Crumble is back home where he belongs. x
Esther
I can not imagine how devastated you must be. My thoughts are so much with you. The police should be on to this. It is not legal to shoot a dog just for being on your land.
DogLostCJ - Police Liaison & SE Regional Coordinator
from an email sent to me

My neighbour was kind enough to collect Crumble's body from the farmer who killed him. The farmer hurled abuse at him and refused any assistance when he was gathering the body. There was no evidence of any blood or other sheep contact in or around Crumble's mouth. He is now buried at our farm.

what is worrying is that this information

He's had a lot of experience killing local dogs. Crumble is the fourth one that I know about in the past couple of years.)

I am awaiting feedback from Kent police concerning this case.
Carol
Thanks Sherlock Bones hope he gets punished but more so hope crumble is returned to his family for a dignified loving burial xxxxxx

I am so saddened to read of this despicable act. Owners must be devestated. It cannot be undone :( So very sorry and my sincere condolances.
DogLostCJ - Police Liaison & SE Regional Coordinator
owner has told me this was reported to police. I am trying to check details with Kent police on this but it seems was within 48 hours.
However he made no attempt to inform owners despite knowing this was their dog.
Unknown
I have only just seen this. I think it is right that by law if a farmer shoots someones dog it should be reported to the police within 48 hours of the incident. If not presume the farmers has broken the law, and should be dealt with accordingly. I hope this farmer is happy now that has broken the hearts of a family including children, especially as the dog was not bothering the sheep at the time; you are a coward, and I hope you never find a moments peace. You are as bad as the individuals who abandoned "Jim", and "Honey" Night, night Crumble, sleep tight, and look down o n your family who really need your strength at this time. Sending comforting (((HUGS))) to your family for their sad loss. Have fun at the bridge dear Crumble until you are all reunited when the time is right. RIP+ God blessx A~~~Candle~~~burns for Crumble
skippy
How heart-breaking for Crumble's family.

Run free sweetheart :(( xxxx
Kinsally
Oh no I just checked on here to see if any news on Crumble & my heart just sank, I am so so sorry what a waste of such a beautiful dogs life. Just tragic. As for that farmer you have NO respect for animal life & have broken the heart's of this lovely dogs family. RIP beautiful Crumble xxx
DogLostSpringerMad - Area Volunteer, East Sussex
This is absolutely heart breaking to read. Poor Crumble and family. CJ - when you find out whether this should have been reported by the farmer could you let us know please? I always thought this was the case.

To the farmer : You are disgusting. I cannot print on here would I would like to say about you. And to hear that you have sent 'crowing' emails about what you did, and allowed this poor family to hunt high and low for the dog, you should be ashamed of yourself. Has crumble been given back to the family, I hope so for some kind of closure. What a disgusting, vile act. As a believer in Karma I do hope that this seriously comes back to you with a vengeance.Last edited: 2013-10-12 16:50:06 by SpringerMad - Area Volunteer, East Sussex

Terrible news and feel for this family at the loss of their beloved pet.
I am in process of getting more information re law on this. I am certain though that farmer has to report a shooting to police within 48 hours.

I have sent a personal email to owner direct to if they wish to follow any action.
Laura
omg, in tears reading this shocking outcome!Poor crumble. surely the farmer must be able to be prosecuted surely, what a monster! my thoughts are with crumble's family xxx rip beautiful boy xxx
LennyBoy
This is awful. Poor poor dog and poor family. I know Scottish and English Law differs however if the dog wasn't worrying the sheep and was simply passing through the field then has this idiot farmer not committed any firearms or animal cruelty offence??? I know in Scotland that we can pass through fields with livestock with our dogs and it is only if they are causing problems for the livestock that the farmer can act in such a way. Someone I know was verbally abused and threatened by a local farmer in the Pentland Hills when walking his border collie off lead but under close control- we have to remember that UNDER CONTROL does not mean ON LEAD!! Working dogs can be controlled at distance and up close off lead and so can some pet dogs. This farmer had a gun and was threatening to shoot the dog for being in the field, albeit with the owner. The police were called and the farmer was spoken to. Wish he was so attentive when I called him to advise him of broken fencing and sheep straying and lambs that had fallen into snow filled ditches!! Doesn't give a damn about his sheep then- he came after 12 hours and shot the lamb dead saying vet bill would have cost more than it was worth. Farmers need to be brought into line. I do understand that if a dog is seen attacking or actually worrying livestock then every effort should be made to protect the animals but I believe that they should try to catch the dog first and only shoot as a last resort. Ideally I think they should only be allowed to fire sedatives!!! I often worry about people not being properly vetted when the licenses are handed out for firearms- maybe this farmer should be reported for misuse of his firearm?? This is a serious issue after all. RIP little Crumble xxx

I take it that from what you have written that poor Crumble was shot dead. So needs to be moved to rainbowbridge.I am soooo sorry for your loss and my thoughts are with you all at this sad time. Nasty man, i think farmers should not be so trigger happy, plus knowing it was your dog, i am sure could have been so different if he was a human being!!!!! They say what goes around etc etc, so justice will be done. Just glad i don`t have neighbours like him. R.I.P. Crumble, your life cut short by a trigger happy nasty farmer!!
