This lovely little chap was never claimed. He is currently at Meadowgreen waiting for a forever home. They will keep him safe, hopefully he will be one of the lucky ones. Just wish we could have offered him a home but are filled to the rafters. X

That's a quandary. I like long sandy dog friendly beaches (Formby beach my childhood play area), so Merseyside, Pembrokeshire, Dorset or North Yorkshire. My main worry is I will end up with a pack of fostered dogs that I fall in love with and keep. My fella's only concern is they aren't allowed to sleep on the bed. :-).

I'm totally with you on that Pointerlover. I'm working towards a plan to buy a house with some land and begin a "holding safe place" for rescue dogs. Not a charity, under my expense to foster them until they have their new home or rescue space. All the old and handicapped and not easily re homed will be welcome. It's a 5 year saving plan and 4 years to go.

Just thinking maybe those of us who can ,keep watch on our local pounds and bring to the attention of the rest of us any doggies that are particularly at risk or who have not made it out to rescue and time is fast approaching they need to be out .... or else. We could then try to get them a place in a rescue near to one of us that has a space ? This way we are giving that little one a better chance of life and we know we have all tried our best. I know it might mean a bit of arranging to transport a dog from one area to another but we will never know uses we try . After all there are a good few of us on here we might need to only do a few miles each.Another way to help is to start fundraising or donations to keep an at risk dog in kennels until a rescue or foster/forever home becomes available.Of course to discus long term ideas to help we do need to get together somehow.??

All you say silver, is right, but the problem is how to actually do those things. How do we want the law changed? How do we decrease the numbers of breeders ? It is all very difficult when it comes down to it. Thanks Helen , glad this little one is safe anyway.

Ah that is good to hear. Our local rescue, which is relatively small takes in small number of 'good natured' staffies at any one time but fortunately there is a steady successful turnover - they may take a bit longer to rehome than other dogs but they eventually go. Positive campaigning is the answer to the staffie problem - get laws changed, as you say get as many people on side as possible - increase number of rescues who will take and people who will give them a chance whist decrease numbers of back street breeders.

I have been looking at quite a few rescue sites recently and unless breed specific they nearly all have a lot of staffies. Quite often they disguise the staffie crosses as a cross breed but say what the other part of the cross is rather than say staffie. I think we need to work out why so many are being bred compared to other breeds. Is it their tough guy image? Perhaps we need to try to change that in some way. Any news on this staffie by the way

Perhaps we have to find a way of getting the attention of the people who respond to the alerts all over the country when a dog goes missing ?.I also think that we have to watch the pounds in our areas for dogs that are not rehomed or offered a rescue space quick enough to save them. I am not saying we have to take out dangerous dogs but maybe we could find more people who would foster a good natured dog and enable a forever home to be found for it. Perhaps we could then see that the ones that needed more specialised help get it,giving them the best chance of being suitable for rehoming. Moving dogs to rescues in areas of the country that do not have the numbers that say inner city ones have to take in could save lives. I know these are perhaps only short term solutions to the problem but it would be a start.I do hope we can make this happen . Where is everyone ?

A good idea Pointerlover. It would be interesting to see how many people could come together over this. It would after all help all the abandoned staffies but it would also mean there would be more rescue space for other breeds. At the moment those of us following this little dog are geographicaly a long way apart, I am in south Derbyshire

Sorry sweetheart your a HE! I still have poor Millie on my mind. It is good to hear about Jacobs Pound, and how they are helping. I know Staffie rescues are full sadly. I think some people get the wrong idea about this breed. In my local park some Staffie owners are being abused by a small minority of people saying they shojuld not let these dangerous dogs in the park, and how dare they bring them out etc. My sister owned a Staffie until the dog died at 13. She was very playful as they are but she has the most wonderful temperament.

Pointerlover - I'm all for that. I'm in S Herts.
There is one way we can all help - by assisting the people and charities that pull these dogs out of the pounds whenever they can. The group that I'm helping out are called Jacobs Pound and they are currently desperate for help. We can help by offering to foster,or donating, help with transport for the dogs, sharing information on the dogs etc. As you say, a lot of these dogs are Staffies, of which the rescues are full.

I am all for that and live in Buckinghamshire. The DW in Broxtowe stated that the neighbouring authority pts several every week. I note that Save Our Staffies urgently need rescue space, homes and donations for 4 staffies who will be euthanized end of month if no help offered. There are 100,000 dogs abandoned in UK every year the majority of which are staffies and staffie crosses. Perhaps we could dedicate the group in Millies name so she did not die in vain. Timmy's mummy - I meant that Battersea are being asked to rescue and rehome dogs including Akitas, Dobies, Staffies, GSDs etc from all these Countries I mentioned and Battesea have to say no as they are not coping with influx of UK dogs especially staffies. There is so much work to do re this problem and am sure we all know people who would want to help too. Any news on little one above?

The plight of all these beautiful Staffies has caused me to have a heavy heart for a long time now. What happened to Millie just hits you full on as to what is happening and with so little regard for their lives. Seven days is not enough time for a decision to be made to give up on these babies. you all know what stress they must be going through during that time.They either fight with every ounce of their life or shut down completely. More one to one time and TLC is needed to be given to them at this crucial time .I am sure from what everyone has been posting there are a lot of us who want to do so much but just do not know where to start or where to put forward ideas that most importantly get carried out to start making a difference to these babies. .i think the time has come when we have to try and get EVERYONE who really cares together ,to air their views and talk through new ideas. We could meet in groups of people who live fairly close to each other to start. There must be quite a few who are associated with Doglost to start let alone dedicated rescue worked, vets etc. . I do hope that some of you think this is a good way forward so that we can start helping these babies NOW .

Any one can start a petition on government e petitions .The most successful are very specific, and need to be carefully worded.

Millie's issue (i think) was that she was very aggressive towards other dogs (when tested) and no one had space for her to have her issues solved. I agree that she wasn't given much of a chance but the council workers have to stay within their rules. A friends dog was killed by a rescue dog that had had issues and I see it from both sides of the discussion.
This little man will hopefully pass his test and be suitable for a normal rescue space.
I personally would want to see all dogs being neutered by default unless owners have a breeding licence. It would reduce the majority of these "throw away" pets and although there would be some in society that would ignore the rules, it would vastly reduce the number of dogs being destroyed every week. Have a look at Swedish law reference dog ownership, puts us to shame in the UK.

Mr Pickles this dog has not been PTS.
He has been collected by the Dog Warden and we hope his owner will come forward, if not he will be up for rehoming, as Dorcas Franklyn-Bray has said in an earlier post "he is a complete sweetie" and I feel sure he will, if not claimed find a home x

I wonder why people in Japan etc want large bull breeds? I wouldn't be happy sending dogs to Japan, its too far away and we wouldn't have home checkers there. I bet the person who left this well cared for dog in the church yard had a few tears. Oh dear I wish I wasn't a dog lover and then stories like this wouldn't make me cry. Such a dear little chap bless him. I hope someone comes forward to claim him that cares. There are so many of these poor dogs being abandoned. On the SDK Environmental Found Dog's website there are often many of them each week collected as strays & on there today includes a poor little young pup of only about 8 weeks old, I often wonder what happens to many of these poor dogs that are never claimed. I do wish something could be done for them all its just so sad x

My God - my heart was broken when I found out Millie pts but DW said there had been one or two "unsuitable offers" and dog traumatised and distressed in kennels. I don't blame the system but we must all do something to get Government to listen and bring in new laws. Need more positive media coverage - One Show, Dispatches??? to highlight this dreadful problem. Battersea rang me back today and spoke to nice guy on intake - said having calls from Japan, Canada and Europe asking to take dogs mostly large and bull breeds. Battersea said may be able to take a dog in March or earlier if cancellation - they were very helpful and gave me the direct line if we need help. Too late for Millie but maybe we can help this cutie and other staffies on these pages. I am happy to sign a petition and also offer a donation for kennelling if needed.

I too agree with all that has been said. She is absolutely gorgeous, and hope she will find a home soon. To cut down on breeding a law would have to be brought in to make Staffie owners have their dogs neutered, and their argument would be the owners "Rights" to let their dog have puppies if they wish, and then there is the breeders... But we see it on DL dont we? where some owners have let their dogs have puppies; does my head in. I would definitely be in a favour of a petition, and would sign it. I have two female cats, and I absolutely adore kittens (And puppies) but guess what? They are both spayed. Of course the majority of Staffie owners are responsible, and has been said, it is all about educating people.

Yes SH I am sick of seeing poor little Staffie bitches that have clearly had more than one litter being dragged around by young blokes. Education is clearly needed, but the sort of people that do this, aren't the sort that will listen to any reasoning about what they are doing. They are family dogs not status symbols that are treated so badly.

I truely believe that this is yet another beautiful dog that has been tied up and left just like dog lost 60430. Sadly even though a few of us offered to donate money to give the beautiful girl a chance of finding her forever home, no one came forward, there was no space in the recue centres so she was pts on Monday. As I put on her post when I read she had been pts SURELY there is something that can be done to stop these poor, poor misunderstood dogs being abandoned and left to their fate. Is there a way we can get a petition going which will get enough votes so the goverment HAVE to deal with the issue. I know so many people are amazing owners of staffies but sadly there are many more who treat them so badly and then abandon them to their fate. I really hope this beautiful one will find a forever home, I will be watching this every day xxx

Local police called and they have had no reports of a stolen dog - they are going to contact Norfolk Police and liase with them in case he is from over the border.

He has just been collected by the dog warden and will go to a rescue centre. The owner has 7 days to come forward or he will be put up for rehoming. Anyone who recognises him need to phone Waveney District Council.

He is a complete sweetie, we have posted pictures of him on all the local FB pages. We will phone the dog warden and police first thing. A local rescue lady checked and he isn't chipped and has no id on his collar. He is obviously loved though as is in lovely condition and has a good collar, harness and lead. Apparently he had been in the church yard for a number of hours and was very distressed and cold. I will phone the vet first thing as well to see if he is on their book.
