Message from Spots owners to you all QUOTE Many thanks for all the sympathetic messages. Unfortunately in spite of a great effort by many people, we have been unable to find either Spot or Angus, the other dog taken at the same time. However the search continues UNQUOTE Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Doglover123. Don't know what the other ferry companies do - would be worth checking them all out. The letter has gone to the ferry company, so I shall come back and advise of their reply. Hope news soon on Spot and Angus xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am disgusted after reading your posting Lozza123. I cannot believe the ferry co. have no feelings whatsoever for the dogs on board. It has certainly put me off taking my two with me to Ireland. I hope other ferries will be checked out as well now, for kennel security and conditions they are left in. Why does it have to take something to happen before anything is done??Also why did it take so long before the police were notified ? Did they not feel it was important enough? I really hope for their sakes these two are found safe and well soon. With no thanks for their inconsideracy and negligence while they were on board.Stay safe darlings.xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello so sorry to hear about events on the ferry. We sailed from Swansea on 23.06.06, with two dogs whom I had booked kennels for. The weather was warm, so we chose the option of the deck kennels when offered. I was very concerned that they could not be locked, had no labelling even to indicate who they belonged to however it was too late to go back below deck. My husband and I checked repeatedly all night, and they were luckily safe in the morning, along with a third dog staying with them. On the return journey on 01.07.2006 my husband and I had already made the decision that we would not use the deck kennels as we had been too worried. As we waited to check in another passenger advised us of two dogs going missing during the week. We were horrified. My husband went immediately to the Pursar who advised that this was true. We put the dogs below decks this time, however the deck was sweltering, the kennels tiny, no indication of who the dogs belonged to, and access very restricted due to cars being parked up against the kennels. One member of crew advised that I could visit with a steward. Unhappy about the situation, we went to our cabin and then to deck, where we noticed that the deck kennels had been completely removed since the previous week. Later I attempted to gain access to the deck, and had to argue quite strongly to be taken down to check they were cool enough. When I asked about the deck kennels, I was advised there had been some problems. I was eventually allowed down, but this is evidently not the norm. I intend to write to the ferry company complaining at the kennel provision and the heat below deck, as I would rather leave them at the boarding kennels and fly next time if it is no better. I shall post the esponse on this website now I have found it. So sorry to hear of your loss - we hope that that you get some news. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just spoken to Spots owners, heres a little more scandal. According to the ships log the Port Agents were notified of the missing dogs at 6.35am, however the police were not notified till 7.20am, by this time a 3rd of the passengers had left. I will be contacting the ferry company tomorrow to speak to the Managing Director if possible.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am horrified to hear about Spot. I travel with my terrier on ferries in Scotland and they have dog friendly areas on the boat so you don't have to leave them. Why should this company be so different and then not care??? Come home soon Spot!!! andie xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is so sad, please be found safely Spot, I'd want the ferry company to do a full investigation, where were security at the time, do ferries not have any CCTV? Jo xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is appalling! If the ferry company insists on dogs being kennelled for the journey then it is their responsibility to ensure that they are safe and secure. Depending on their security at the kennels I think I'd be looking at an inside job! And yes, I think the company should be named and shamed, but I suppose you have to be careful not to be sued for libel/slander!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

surely after this it is time for all dogs travelling by ferry to stay with their owners.the ferry company must be made to take responsibility for this because they put the announcement out too late.and why have night security staff who are not responsible for security, that makes no sense.i wonder how many ferry companies do the swansea to cork route, this company should be named.trishkLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This whole scenario is absolutely disgusting.SOMEONE in authority has got to take the blame. Assumptions cannot be made really until all avenues have been completely checked. I hope for the little dogs sake and the owners this horrible ordeal has a happy outcome.xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is an unbelievable story - two little dogs go missing off the same ferry from 'secure' kennels! Could you tell us who the ferry company involved is? I think we should bombard them with demands for rapid action on this double loss. And how about the local police? Should they not be interviewing the duty staff for that crossing? This is appalling! Can't someone from Doglost get in touch with the media - GMTV, the papers, Paul O'Grady, whatever and bring this to peoples attention and shame the ferry company into action?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is disgusting- how can companies decide when they are responsible or not if they insist on using their kennels. If they had been left in the car they would have been safer. Some-one obviously gone to a lot of trouble to take them & get them of the ship. Hope authorities start & take notice & these two dogs are back home soon. I'm too far away to be of any help unfortunatly Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I would think that if someone went to the trouble of taking the dogs out of thier cages and resecuring them to make it inconspicuous plus being small breeds , I would almost certainly think they have been smuggled off, Disgusting that passengers were allowed to leave without proper checks! I would shame the ferry company. Really hope these two come home safe and sound!! ChrisxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Things you should know issued by the Ferry company. QUOTE Pets, Dogs and other domestic pets are not permitted to be kept in cabins or public places. Kennels are provided, and should be booked in advance. Dogs can be kept in owners car at their own risk during the voyage. UNQUOTE Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well that rings of foul play doesn't it. Cavlady is right, surely the ferry company are responsible for the animals if they insist on them being secured in their kennels. Would the media be interested in this story of a ferry company ignoring a passengers plea for help?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The kennels on the top deck are secured by means of a hook into a loop. Locks are not allowed apparently in case the ship sinks. Spots kennel hook and loop were still in tact when owners discovered him missing. And both kennels were empty but SECURED!!! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Again owners of Spot are worried that someone may have thrown the dogs over board as a prank. Well Im praying it isnt the case.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I think this is absolutely appalling. If the Ferry service insist on dogs being put into their kennels, then surely they are responsible whilst the dogs are in their care! I do hope Spot is found safe soon xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Spot is the 2nd dog that disappeared from the Swansea to Cork Ferry crossing on 28th June. Owners found Spot missing at approx 6am, they asked the receptionist to put out an announcement to passengers. They refused saying they couldnt without authority. By the time the announcement went out some people had already left the ferry, some walking passengers left without any checks. Owners state that Port Police were present and were checking vehicles but not thoroughly. County Radio have put out an appeal, ISPCA Dublin informed, but yet again owners are having difficulty getting in touch with Cork Pound. The Captain apparently told the owners that their night security staff were not responsible for the security of the dogs. I have put owners of Spot in touch with owners of Angus.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
