Video: Dognapped Salford pug Frank shines light on dog theft epidemic
By Tom Rodgers
A pedigree pup who was dognapped from a Trafford supermarket car park has returned home to his family in Winton, Salford.
A huge social media campaign - including thousands of tweets and Facebook messages - helped to locate Frank the pug 20 miles from his home in Accrington, Lancashire.
It's thought Frank was stolen by a criminal gang, then sold on a cut price to another dog owner.
Read all about Frank's story here.
In other cases, pedigree dogs are ransomed back to their owner.
Now those who helped Phil Ludlam find his prized pet want to put the spotlight on the increasing number of dog thefts.
Louise Dunning from Altricham helps to run a number of pages on Facebook, as well as volunteering for DogLost.co.uk, a service which helps to reunite owners with their pets.
"People don't know how many dogs are stolen - and they can be used for all sorts - puppy farms or dog baiting.
"Dogs need to be microchipped, it's so cheap and easy to do. It should become the law."
At present, the largest punishment for someone convicted of stealing an animal is a small fine. Through Pet Theft Awareness week, which runs from 14-21 March, these dog lovers want tougher penalties for the crime.

Joy for Salford family as missing Frank the Pug found
By Tom Rodgers
A prized family pet stolen from a supermarket car park in Trafford has been returned, to the delight of his owners.
Pxxl Lxxxxm from Winton was distraught when Frank, an 18-month old black pug, went missing as he shopped in Asda in Trafford Park.
At around 3.30pm on Friday 21 February Pxxl returned to his Mercedes van after half and hour away to find his beloved Frank missing, presumed stolen.
Pedigree puppies of the same breed can be sold for hundreds of pounds.
He was especially worried as the young pup needs regular medication
There started a huge social media campaign to get Frank back home. A Facebook page called Help Find Frank the Pug has almost 2,000 likes and the story quickly went viral.
Family and friends shared the story, scouring local selling websites, while Coronation Street stars including Beverley Callard tweeted to thousands of followers.
The family were even invited national dog show Crufts, handing out leaflets and meeting top TV stars.
Today SalfordOnline.com can report that Frank has been returned safe and well.
After two weeks of investigation, Pxxl traced his missing dog to a woman in Accrington. With his van liveried up and plastered in 'Help Find Frank' posters, he was able to get her to admit that she had bought Frank for a minimal sum, thought to be in the region of £300.
"I scanned him, and showed her Frank's doggie passport, and she was distraught because she'd fallen in love with him."
Now the pup is back home safe, "he won't leave me alone, he's sitting here in the sun with his eyes shut like he's never been away," says Phil.
"The last 16 days have felt like 16 months," he said.
"I didn't know if he was hurt or lost or anything.
"Now I just want my experience to help others - people need to be aware that there are people deliberately targeting these dogs."
Next week, 14-21 March is Pet Theft Awareness Week, and Phil wants insurance companies and vets to make it a priority to make owners aware.
"I want these people found and charged, because thieves will not stop thieving.
"It's no fault of owners, but we need the awareness out there that this is going on."

- Brilliant news- getting scary. I am hearing of dogs being taken from shopping area in London. Perhaps owners would be wise to not take their dogs with them whilst shopping

- Fantastic news for owners and frank, like everyone else can't wait to hear how he was found. I think everyone sharing and making dogs to hot to handle does work petty it doesn't work for all that's missing but we can keep trying. So happy for frank

- Discussed with owners and helper at CRUFTS the importance of using a photo which shows the white markings of Frank on his chest, which is the one they had on the posters being distributed around CRUFTS. I've uploaded the photo now onto his DogLost poster (you may need to refresh the page to view it).
This photo will help when getting any matches. - 2014-03-10 19:35 samvandyk
- I have shared on Facebook. My French Bulldog was stolen last July, she was found in December safe and sound but was 6 months of hell. Praying he is found soon.

- Hope Frank will be home very soon. I wish people would keep their thieving hands off other people pets. A wonder we dont have to employ bodyguards to protect them. Grrrr.... Gr.... Gr....

- Met Frank's owners today at CRUFTS with a helper who has been helping them in their search. They were doing a great job spreading the word. Had some posters on our Doglost CRUFTS and handed them out and also spoke to other Pugs owners who were showing or visiting CRUFTS.

- Yes I noticed 65542 with the Asda reference but dismissed because it said female
I have found a similar look to Frank with the reference to white on chest in photo: http://www.pets4homes.co.uk/classifieds/568018-black-pug-for-sale-to-loving-forever-home-bacup.html ....so willing this little boy home for you x - 2014-03-07 10:34 LYDNSYD
- A pug has 'supposed' to have been found by Asda's in RG6 with a white patch on chest ....REF 65542
It says it is female etc but it wouldn't be the 1st time that these descriptions are wrong - wouldn't do any harm to have a look.Last edited: 2014-03-07 10:34:53 by LYDNSYD - 2014-03-07 09:08 Majorjet (Jan) - Area Co-ordinator - Liverpool/Merseyside, North West

- FRANK's family, friends and helpers are doing a great job looking for him.
There is media coverage in Altrincham, Salford and Manchester Evening News papers. They are hoping to get other papers to put something in.
Owner will be going to CRUFTS over the weekend.
Vets Get Scanning have posters up on their stand a CRUFTS which is great.
Thank you to everyone who is helping spread the word. x - 2014-03-02 22:42 Sherlock- Area Co-ordinator & Police Liaison - Avon & South Gloucestersh

- Asda will have CCTV covering the car park, the police should help you access it if needs be.Get there fast though- and ask if you can put up posters all round the car park and instore-someone will have seen what happened. Keep an eye on Gumtree and Pre=loved too in case someone tries to sell him on. Contact the local paper & see if they will run a story. I hope he's back home very soon- fingers crossed for you and Frank.
