- When I lost Daisy, my Dog Warden, Diane, was wonderful and went out of her way to get in touch if she thought she had a lead as to Daisy's whereabouts. Luckily, Daisy was reunited with us, but I am so grateful to people like Diane who showed compassion. Le.t's all work together to reunite lost doggies witht heir owners! PS - Diane works for Wakefield MDC Dog Warden Service.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- On a personal level Merlin, I have had a wonderful relationship with my dog wardens and say so at every opportunity, unfortunately some people don't, we try not to rip into people unnecessarily but some people are in the wrong profession and their 'bedside manner' leaves a lot to be desired. It is unfortunate that some dogs are not permanently identified but that does not take away the owners pain and it is not something we like to harp on about when the owner is probably berating themselves about it. The permanent id system has not worked for me but I am hoping it will at some point in the very near future, in the meantime we have started up Dolly's Directive and hope that the NDWA would be supportive of this campaign, perhaps you could mention it to them?? - Merlin, thank you for registering and taking the time to post advice. We can quote loads of wonderful dog wardens who will do anything they can. Unfortunately the way that many local authorities work, owners have to get past the Environmental Services message taker (who may not be helpful) and sometimes have to endure a pest control officer who 'does dogs' because it's in his/her JD. Unfortunately the criticism is usually directed at the DW rather than the council. We are trying to improve our communications with DW, so I hope things will improve.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- I have been monitoring this site for over a year, but perhaps if people stopped slagging off Local Authorities, more Dog Wardens would register. Most Dog Wardens are dog lovers who have the best interests of the dogs at heart, it seems only too easy to blame the authorities and not the dog owners who fail to identify their dogs.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Hi I'm the Animal Warden for the London Borough of Sutton. Finally had to register to respond to this. Under the Dogs Act 1906 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990, dogs which are 'retained by finder', never have legal ownership transferred from the original owner, although they may be passed on after one month. With regard to a dog being retained by finder or going into official holding kennels, I know that if I ever lost one of my dogs I would rather it went into kennels through the official channels, than remained in someones house, where the chances of my finding it are slim to say the least. Why oh why do people not have collars and tags on their dogs and get them microchipped or tatooed?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- That's right Candy. You have to be able to show that you have made every effort to trace the owner and inform the relevant authoritieis that you have found a dog. I must say that if I found a dog I would hold onto it in preference to it being held for only 7 days and maybe being passed on. Wouldn't regard it as mine after a month - would treat it as mine but if the true owner came forward even long after I'd hand it back. It would only be right and what I would hope someone would do for me. I'd hate a dog to vanish into what appologises for a 'system' and get given to someone else after 7 days or so.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- I am sure the finder has a legal obligation to inform the local authority dog warden and that it has to be logged by them, they cannot just keep a low profile and wait for the 28 days to be up. Hope Nell is home soon. Dolly 6.2.05Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Dogs retained by finder are required to be kept for one month, after which the finder can legally either keep the dog or find it a new home, if it is retained by the Police, RSPCA, or other registered dog charities will be put up for adotpion after 7 days....HCKCS Rescue Co-ordinator. Yes quite disturbing I agree.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- this retain by finder sounds very disturbing.does this mean that if one gets to keep a dog after 28 days that one could then sell that dog or give it away or do anything they like with it?do you know poppy? trishkLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Don't forget if you have reported it to the police, that they have a file called retain by finder, it's worth checking. It means that the person who finds your dog can keep it with them, after 28days if no one comes forward they can legally keep the dog. Make sure the police have your details on the data base so it goes to all other stations within your part of yorkshire. Take a poster to your local postal depot, postmen get everywhere, dustbin men and window cleaners, also schools. Good luck. Against all odds I've just got my dog back a week today.
