- I am very sorry to report that I have just had a message from Julie to say that she has identified a body as Rio. I will leave her to add anytmore she wants to the page. This was not the outcome we were expecting, no-one could have done more than Julie to try and get their dog home.
Thank you to everyone who has helped, I know Julie really does appreciate it and asked me to pass on her thanks to you all.

- That sounds possible Julie and also it is near to where he was seen originally at Batworthy. I did stick a poster up at Fernworthy reservoir, hope it is still there. So, if he worked his way up towards Whiddon Down and then did the triangle back past Fernworthy, hopefully he will be working his way back to North Bovey and then down the side of the river to Barnecourt and then to the Cleave again. What do you think?
- 2014-05-13 09:19 Bobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
- Great that you've worked out his area and there are sightings. I will bump teh page again.
Please anyone looking for Rio, do so quietly so as not to spook him and note where and when you saw him and contact Julie as soon as you can. - 2014-05-13 06:31 julie
- Thank you Kim. Received a couple of phone calls yesterday reporting several sightings of a thin collie around Fernworthy Reservoir over the last week. Can't be sure it was Rio, but if it is , after plotting previous sightings on a map, it would make the triangular pattern of movement that has been suggested, between Lustleigh/North Bovey, Whiddon Down and now the reservoir. Shall tryand get posters around there today .
- 2014-05-12 19:06 Kim
- Walked across Lustleigh Cleave to Hunters Tor with Binoculars this afternoon. No sightings I am afraid :(
Went all the way around past Foxworthy and then back over to Hammerslake. Will do the walk again soon and take some posters with me.
I think it is just going to be a case of being in the right place at the right time! Hopefully another sighting from someone soon. - 2014-05-10 19:10 Bobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
- Great that you're back Kim, hope you had a lovely rest amd that Rio is home from his adventure soon too.
- 2014-05-10 19:07 Kim
- Have been on holiday, but am back now to help with the search. It is all sounding quite positive and really Lustleigh, North Bovey and Chagford are so close to each other when using bridle paths and off road. it really does sound likely that he could cover this area. And as Janice says, it is possible not to see anyone at all.
Have been out looking around North Bovey today and will head up that way again tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have run out of posters until I can get some printed when I get back to work. Hopefully there will be another sighting soon. x - 2014-05-10 08:22 Bobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
- Please keep an eye out for Rio especially if you are in the general Morehampstead/Bovey Tracey area. If you see him, please note exact location and contact owner as soon as you can. Please do not try and catch him, in case it panics him,if you can just stay quite and calm and watch where he goes.
Thank you eveyone who is helping and refreshing posters will be very helpful too. - 2014-05-09 09:34 Paw
- I've used plastic inserts for doglost posters and I put the open end to the bottom and don't seal them. The paper doesn't slide out and they should be less prone to condensation but wet weather won't help!! I do hope you find him soon.
- 2014-05-08 21:59 julie
- Hi Spindle, Ive been using the plastic inserts, just think condensation gets the better of them. Great idea re local posties though. Have left posters at local shops/post offices in areas, but guessing posties are likely to be on the roads when roaming dogs are most active
- 2014-05-08 21:21 Spindle
- Buy a pack of cheap plastic file inserts and seal bottom with sellotape, they are cheap and effective. Drop some posters into local sorting office, if they put on notice boards posties will watch out for him.
- 2014-05-08 21:09 julie
- Thanks for your comments Janice. We rang around local farms in the Lustleigh/North Bovey/Moretonhampstead areas when we first started to have sightings in these areas, but have been thinking of a mail drop in these areas now to refresh peoples memories. We have been trying to replace posters in areas of possible sightings, but alas the weather hasnt been that kind to us all the time.
- 2014-05-08 19:50 Unknown
- What a corker! Hope there will be some news soon.
- 2014-05-08 17:40 Janice
- Hi, have been following this and looking out. I occurs to me that it would be possible to travel from Parke to Chagford and not meet any one at all. The only main road would be the one from Moreton heading west onto the moor and all other roads have very little traffic. But just between Bovey and Lustleigh/Manaton/North Bovey there is so much open ground and woodland I wonder how likely it is Rio would continue travelling further away (rather than the do the triangle). I know you've got posters up (sadly a little rain soaked now) but have you also leafleted farmers along the route?
- 2014-05-08 16:55 Bobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
- Julie, I don't know if you have had a chance to do the map plotting suggested last week? But looking on a map now, it is feasible and as Spindle says the thing is to check it out. You have been doing great following leads that turn out to be dud, wasn't it Morehampstead you walked up to the first time? Both possibles are well within his area. My guess is yes he could, although probably not all sightings are him. I've said it before we need one good current sighting.
Anyone out and about in the area if you see a Collie that could be Rio would be great if you could take a photo to send Julie for easier verification. Thanks to everyone helping get this boy home. - 2014-05-08 12:37 Spindle
- Julie, plot on a map where the sightings are. How far from where he went is this possible sighting. Sadly lots of collie are farm dogs and have a habit of being allowed to wander. Though important every lead is checked out and postered.
- 2014-05-08 11:05 julie
- Just received a phone call from a lady travelling along the A382 from Chagford towards Exeter, reporting a dog matching Rios description walking on the road near a property called France House. Family member out that way searching at the mo. Confusion setting in again. Have had several reported sightings in the chagford area, an then several more in the areas closer to where he went missing. Rio is an old boy- would he really be able to cover that much distance, or could this be two different dogs being spotted
- 2014-05-07 22:58 #stoppettheft
- Hoping You & Rio are soon reunited

- Bumping due to latest sightings. Good Luck as this seems very positive and what we have been hoping for.
- 2014-05-07 07:54 Spindle
- Great news, normal for lost dog to work the route in a triangle. Pls get scenting down in last sighting asap. Rain forecast tin south west for next few days after today.
- 2014-05-07 00:22 julie
- After a week of lots of false starts ,including a trip to Moretonhampstead yesterday, to visit the house of someone who had picked up a 'stray' border collie, with the name Rio on his tag, who turned out to be not our Rio, but someone elses (very strange moment), i finally seem to have had some positive news. A message from someone who had been doing duke of edinburgh walking on the 5th May, he said he had seen a poster in a bus shelter whilst his group were on a break, further along the road, a black and white collie walked alongside his group, they called his name, and the dog vanished. The sighting was just outside North Bovey, passed somewhere called Barnecourt, and Barnfield. The dog headed off in the direction of New Barn. Map Grid reference number 755 836.
Have only just seen this message, as have had alot going on in my personal life. Feeling positive though, as we have a previous sighting shortly after Rio first went missing in the North Bovey area. I'm guessing That that coupled with the last two sightings around Lustleigh Cleave area last week may suggest he's staying in the same area.
Kim - does that seem logical to you? - 2014-05-01 08:56 Spindle
- So hope it is Rio very difficult until either you see him or someone confirms 100 per cent. Until then though you are following all up and that brill. Sadly so many farm dogs do wander but you really deserve to find Rio. Hope its very soon.
- 2014-04-30 23:02 julie
- Thanks for that suggestion Kim, shall do it now :-) x
- 2014-04-30 23:01 julie
- No Luck at Whiddon Down this evening, had another possible sighting of a collie in Sourton area which was 8 miles away, so investigated there too. Posters are already up in the Whiddon Down area, which prompted the phone call, (so at least i know they are doing there job). Unfortunately the sighting was at 10am , and i didnt receive the phone call till 6pm. Very frustrating. Completely confused now, if its Rio, theres no logical explanation for him being there. Keeping my eyes open for other lost dogs in the area , but not aware of any. Lots of farms close by to where we've had sightings, high chance some (or all of them) may have been farm dogs.

Hi Julie. May be a good idea to get a poster to Okeford vets (link above). They will put him on their lost register and also put up a poster. they have branches in Okehampton and Chagford. - 2014-04-30 21:52 Spindle
- Julie, hope its Rio on this last sighting. Can you get posters up fast. Its not that far from home considering the time hes been out.
- 2014-04-30 19:02 julie
- Other sightings have mentioned dogs fur lookin bedraggled and matted in places. This collie was lovely, clean looking with shorter hair. Quite confident not ones seen previously. Just ha a phone call from someone who has seen a collie walking along the old a30 at whiddon down roundabout. Sighting was this morning . No chance it'll still be there but heading out for a look around
- 2014-04-30 17:44 Bobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
- So sorry Julie how frustrating, now we don't know if any of the sightings were Rio or the other dog.
- 2014-04-30 00:41 julie
- Just back from a midnight dash to Chagford, after a phone call from a landlady of one of the pubs there, that had found a border collie. Unfortunately it wasn't Rio, but if anyone is aware of black & white male border collie with a speckly face, please do get in touch

- From reading the last few comments, it looks like it would make sense for Julie to meet Kim and they search together? Kim can show Julie the places.
- 2014-04-28 12:39 Rosie
- Julie, this may be something you are doing or have already thought of, does Rio have a favourite squeeky toy? I've heard that can coax dogs from hiding as it is a familiar friendly sound
- 2014-04-28 12:10 Kim
- HI Julie.
Are you parking on the Manaton road at the top of the Hill and then walking down the hill to the bridge?
There is another car park just before you go up the hill on the bend, turn right towards Lustleigh and follow the lane until you get to a car park on your left before the bridge. You could try and coax him back to here as it is quieter than the main road to Manaton,it is a longer walk to the bridge, but you can see both sides of the river as you are higher up .Saying that, he may even be around that area of the woods now. - 2014-04-28 10:53 julie
- Hi Kim, not sure of the exact spot of yesterdays sighting. One previously came from a mountain biker, who attached with his email a street map. From the map it looked like it was the Hisley wood area, very close to the bridge over the river. Ive left scents around this area. If it is Rio, and he has been sighted here, is there an obvious safe place that we could try to guide him to where people will be able to see him. Not knowing that area very well, and being useless with directions and maps, we've just been parking at the car park for Bovey Valley woods, worried about trying to encourage him back towards the car park and rosd though
- 2014-04-28 09:24 Kim
- This sounds like positive news! This is where we were walking and cycling around last weekend before the sightings in Chagford, as it is so close to Parke.
Do you know exactly where abouts on the Cleave he was seen as I know Lustleigh quite well. You can't get to Bovey Valley woods without going onto the little back lane which backs onto the Railwayline. Hisley woods is at the top end and you can get to it through Bovey Valley woods or you can park nearer the Cleave by Hammerslake (top end). It is quite a big area though. If you can get to one of the tors you should get a good view of the area.
Julie, please feel free to ring me if it is easier to describe the area he was seen over the phone :)Last edited: 2014-04-28 10:19:34 by Kim - 2014-04-28 08:46 duffs54

- This looks very interesting,as you say Julie, need to find a safe spot to set up feeding station and to be near by. Once you are there and have agood look around, you'll know the spot. Good luck - this is such good news.

- Looking at the OS map it doesn't look as though there is a footpath from Parke to Bovey Valley woods. Unless there is an "unoffical" one.Last edited: 2014-04-28 00:26:48 by Rowana

- Received a voicemail message this evening with another possible sighting at Lustleigh Cleave this evening. Was actually in that area postering at the time and attempting a scent trail from the area of the last sighting. Unfortunately as i was in the middle of a forrest/woodland area at the time, the voicemail didnt come through untill i was home, and night was setting in. Shall head back that way in the morning though before work. Really not very familiar with this area, but parked in Bovey Valley Woods car park, and followed the wooden signposts from there to Lustleigh Cleave. Was amazed how close Bovey Valley Woods is to Parke, which is where Rio went missing. Do any local people know if you can get to Bovey Valley woods (leading on to Lustleigh Cleave) from Parke, via a riverside path, or is it only accessible by the road? - Bitch in season is interesting and would explain the sighting on Wednesday. It is also in what we are considering to be his area too. Could be a way of luring him in.
- 2014-04-27 14:59 Rowana
- I've postered in Lustleigh village including the lustleigh cleave pub, also renewed posters at Parke and Teigngrace, walked in the Bovey Valley Woods, also, at the Bovey Tracey Golf Centre (which is next to Parke) and the woman in the golf reception there said that she lives out Lustleigh way, and her son has a bitch in season, she said that would attract Rio, I said yes and to please contact you by phone (Julie) if they could help in that regard. - Thanks TeddyMum & Rowena - good point about the posters in the rain. I wondered last night when it was raining hard here if it was the same down your way.
Good Luck today - 2014-04-27 02:16 Teddys Mum - Area Volunteer, West London
- Julie, dogs form patterns when they are out running. If you chart all the sightings on a map and link them together they will probably form a triangle. That is the area that Rio will be moving within. Identify a spot where he has been seen more than once and concentrate scenting that area or setting up a food station. You need to aim to home him in to one area now. Good luck, I do hope it doesn't take too long.
- 2014-04-27 00:25 julie
- Thank you Rowana. Im heading that way too tomorrow afternoon/evening. Planning a visit to all the previous sighting areas to see if i can figure a logical route he may be taking. Shall take posters aplenty with me.
- 2014-04-26 23:31 Rowana
- Will go to Lustleigh tomorrow then, and take some posters (although i remember there are already posters there from last time) - if that was him, maybe he's on his way back - i'm still checking at Parke too just in case.
Annoying that its raining so much as outside posters are getting washed away even in plastic folders - i replaced a few today but they will need doing repeatedly. Last edited: 2014-04-26 23:42:28 by Rowana - 2014-04-26 21:14 Bobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
- Great that you are emailing to various clubs etc, just contact anyone you think off. Call in with physical posters to any you can too.
Kim: Good idea and thanks for listing all those contact numbers, very useful.
Pity the Wednesday sighting did not come through sooner, but now they know about Rio and have contacted, so that's good. Is there anyone who can go out and poster Lustleigh Cleave?
Julie contact the dog wardens yourself (as email)always best to assume they don't contact each other, then if you contact them, you know it's done.

- BBC Radio Devon have a lost animal spot. Not sure how the dog wardens work, but no harm in contacting West Devon and Mid Devon councils:
North Devon dog warden 01271 38 88 70
Mid Devon dog warden 01884 25 52 55
Exeter dog warden 01392 26 51 55 Torridge 01237 42 88 10
West Devon dog warden 01822 81 36 00

Torbay dog warden 01803 20 80 91
South Hams dog warden 01803 86 12 34
Plymouth dog warden 01752 30 41 47
I know a few horse riders and have asked them to keep an eye out to.
Also, meant to ask Is Rio chipped? Just in case his collar has come off?

- I broadened the list of vets last night, so have emailed lots with posters of rio in a 20+ mile radius. Contacted local riding schools and stables , dog walking businesses, rambling clubs, dartmoor climbing groups , off road cycling clubs. Pubs , restaurants and camping sites in the area. Have contacted taxi firms and was thinking of getting in touch with milk delivery firms . Local florists that deliver flowers in the area and parcel delivery firms have been emailed with rios poster too. Contacted the local dog warden when rio first went missing. Does anyone know if dogs details are shared If the recent sitings were of rio then he would have moved into the next council district, so wondered if I should contact them on Monday morning.

- Time to get posters sent out to vets, rescue centres, courier/transport companies further afield. Now the children are back at school, see if you can contact the people that run the school transport (in Dorset one company coordinates all the bus and taxi journeys?). Once got a dog back that was spotted by a school bus driver. Animal feed barns are good places to poster as well and horse riders are a useful ally as they can cover more ground and see further. So good idea that they riding schools have been emailed, try the local ridng club as well.

- Thank you Kim :-). Ive just got in from Fingle Bridge area again, then back to Chagford-Gidleigh-Batworthy, just in case he hasn't wandered further. No sightings of Rio, some strange looks from the staff at Gidleigh Park though!!

- Have been up the Teign Valley again this evening and through Dunsford woods following the river. Came back through Moretonhampstead and followed the river back the other way to Poundsgate and Spichwick to Ashburton. I have put posters up along the way just in case. Hopefully someone will see him over the weekend.

- Just another thought, Rosie the greyhound went missing Oct 2013 from Heathfield and was found near Ilsington 11 days later (so there is still hope) just thinking if you contacted the owners if that's possible? (she was on doglost and if you google it's all over the internet) maybe they could give you tips/advice..

- Hi, just a few suggestions...how about contacting a running group like Teignbridge Trotters,or a cycling group also maybe a canoeing group? as I know they go down the river from fingle bridge area. Also Dartmoor rangers or Dartmoor search and rescue? they cover a wide range and they do mock exercises so it may be worth making them aware. thinking of you all at this difficult time. have been searching for Rio myself. keeping my fingers crossed for another sighting

- Yes , definitely - most dog walkers in Newton know Rio, and there are quite a few people on the look-out for him if and when he gets nearer home.
Great idea emailing the info out. Last edited: 2014-04-24 23:06:05 by Rowana - 2014-04-24 22:59 julie
- Rowana- Rio is so well known locally among the dog walking groups isn't he, that I know for sure if he finds his way closer to home he'll be found.

- Think we've emailed most of the pubs/restaurants/holiday parks between here and north dartmoor. Shall be emailing riding schools/outdoor activity centres tomorrow, along with dental surgeries and doctors surgeries (anywhere where people sit and read posters basically). Any other suggestions on obvious target audiences we've missed are muchly welcomed

- I was headed for Drewsteignton too, but the road became a dirt track and it was getting dark so will go back up tomorrow and try again. Put posters at Dunsford, Teign valley golf club, some pubs along the B3193 that runs along the Teign, and Chudleigh Knighton. Spoke to a few people all very kind and helpful, if Rio does come down by the Teign, people are expecting him.

- You are welcome, dogs are fast asleep and snoring :)
There is a campsite called Sweet Meadow in drewsteignton. May be worth contacting them, people may be having bbq's! 0164724331. I didn't get that far, otherwise I would have dropped a poster in.Last edited: 2014-04-24 21:51:36 by Kim - 2014-04-24 21:31 julie
- Thanks Kim, really do appreciate all that you are doing to help. Your dogs must have had their paws worn down over the last week with the miles you've put in :-). I'm desperate for news of another sighting. Have been given so much useful information to utilise, just need a rough idea where he's at
- 2014-04-24 21:18 Kim
- Have followed the river up the Teign Valley this evening and walked along some of the river at Steps Bridge. No sightings, but I have put posters up along the way. Hoping for a sighting soon.

- Julie it may even be a bitch in season that caused the irratic behaviour. All sorts of things, you are doing great and I am so pleased to see a really good team helping to find Rio. Next sighting is what is needed. Fingers crossed its soon.

- Just a thought, but I knew of a couple of dogs that went missing on Dartmoor and the owner contacted a local flying club. They kindly went out flying around the area. Maybe a long shot?
- 2014-04-24 13:01 julie
- Knowing Rio as we do, a dog on heat would be a fantastic idea. Could really do with another sighting though so we can confirm what we suspect. Think he was following the River Bovey from Parke thru to North Bovey and Lettaford area, River Teign runs From Gidleigh area towards Chagford, so we're working on that theory at the moment. Its all just so out of character for him
- 2014-04-24 10:05 Spindle
- Loose dog will normally stay within the boundaries of a water source, they are very clever. Bitch on heat may be a really good idea. Maybe Julie can decide. Next time Rio is seen really important to get scenting down to keep him in one place. Good luck.
- 2014-04-24 09:26 Rowana
- Dave told me he has a hunch that Rio could be coming back down the Teign river from Gidleigh, so i will be walking down the river from castle drogo area back down to Teigngrace, today after work and again tomorrow with my dog (who Rio knows). Another idea given by my next door neighbour, perhaps to get someone who has a bitch in season, or borrow one, and walk where you want him to follow eg back down the teign. I don't know anyone with a bitch in season so i'll leave it to you to decide whether or not that's a good idea, or logistically possible.

- Hi, I've been in touch with K9 dog search. They can work on scents up to 9 hours cold. Too late for Gidleigh sighting, fingers crossed for the next one though
- 2014-04-23 17:23 Rowana
- Brilliant idea Kim. Here is the website http://www.k9searchdog.org/ it says they are in the West Country.

- If you hear of any possible sightings anywhere at all and are able to text me, please do on 07835121291. I am local and can be in that area in no time. Also have you thought of contacting K9 Search and asking them if they could track from Gidleigh House. As he was there quite recently it may be a possibility.Last edited: 2014-04-23 15:40:37 by Kim

- It does seem like he is following the River's doesn't it. Good idea to walk that way. If he came from Batworthy and then to Gidleigh House he would come across the river again which may take him that way. I wish I wasn't at work today :(
- 2014-04-23 09:33 julie
- Thank you so much for all your help. Have emailed the pub at Fingle bridge with Rios details. Was thinking of heading that way today and walking along the path of the River Teign, in case he's changed direction. Clutching at straws maybe- just want him home tho
- 2014-04-23 09:05 Kim
- Thanks Julie. We walked around Gidleigh down by the river and up to Murchington. Then down to Fernworthy Resevoir and up around the common. Also had a quick look around Fingle Bridge area, and Moretonhampstead, but it was getting too dark. Have been putting posters up. Hopefully there will be another sighting today.

- There was a sighting at approximately 13:30 yesterday somewhere between Batworthy and Chagford (man that called wasnt familiar with area, so couldnt be more specific). The sighting on the Gidleigh Park estate was late afternoon/early evening. A dog was spotted sleeping on the driveway, but ran off when approached. Have postered South Tawton, South Zeal,Whiddon Down, Drewsteignton and Throwleigh this afternoon, just in case he starts to move in that direction. Spotted a beautiful Red and White Collie cross on the road near Manaton this evening. No collar and in immaculate condition. Running eratically around the lanes. Wouldnt come to me , and vanished through a hedgerow where i eventually lost sight of it. May just have been a farm dog out on an explore, really do hope so.

- Just spent afternoon walking around Gidleigh Park estate. The hotel staff were very nice and let me walk around with my dog to look, but nothing to report.
- 2014-04-22 13:42 Kim
- Hi, does anyone know if he was seen in Gidleigh House before or after he was seen in the Batworthy. Also, there are a couple of Batworthy's in chagford does anyone know which one it was, they are in different directions. Just checking before we head out that way again.. it may give us an idea as to which direction he is heading.
- 2014-04-22 13:30 julie
- Yes, that's what we've been doing this far. Going back out there now. All things crossed for positive news

- Would it be worth postering in front of sightings if he is following a river, if you see what I mean.
- 2014-04-22 10:52 julie
- Update on previous comment. Sighting of border collie was in the grounds of Gidleigh house. Nr Chagford. I'm told this is Michael Caines restaurant/country hotel . Grounds staff are aware of Rio. Hoping he doesn't wander too much further

- Yes, i think it would. Another sighting of a black and white border collie lying on a drive in the Gidleigh area. Again, when approached he moved on. Was noted to be limping on this occasion though. I'm told lost dogs will often stay near water when first missing (not sure how true that is), would seem that hes been moving along villages along the river bovey though, this far.Going back up their tomorrow to further bombard surrounding area with posters

- Julie, that would fit with the Lustleigh sighting wouldn't it - has he followed the footpath further in that direction?
- 2014-04-21 16:57 julie
- Just received a phone call from a man, saying he had seen a black and white border collie whilst he was out driving between batsworthy and chagford. Dont know the area very well, so any further information would be greatly appreciated

- Julie I'll put a message on Rollos page 67336, he went missing 12/4 in TQ7 whilst owners from Oxfordshire were on holiday. Postcode for Liskeard is PL14 which is 33 miles (as crow flies) from TQ7 just incase it's him. Hope Rio turns up soon.

- When I worked in Wales they researched how far working collies went in a day. They were regularly went over a hundred miles, so sightings some way from where Rio went missing would still be worth reporting

- Bumped due to possible sightings and other possibilites nearer to lost area too. Any help in the Newton Abbott or Bodmin area's greatly appreciated, this boy should be at home.

- Had a telephone call today of a black and white border collie spotted walking on the road between Minnion Village and Golitha falls near Liskeard today.A long way from where Rio was last seen. Visited the area, and left posters just in case, but thought id post on here on the off chance that someone else has been missing a pooch in this area.
