- Saw the owner and had a think , drove around clockwise loop that dogs sort of take when they end their initial bolt and recovery.
Spoke to as many houses farms keepers in that loop and waited.
Keeper from xroad spotted and caught her.

If you check down through the messages, last night someone said they had seen a dog like Tia rooting through bins on the A1 slip road - "near a hotel". There are no bins on the sliproad at all, and its not near a hotel, so thought maybe they had meant the truckstop, as I saw bins there when I went past it on the A1 this morning. Its not very far from where she went missing across country through the field to there.
My friend said she saw someone walking round the outside of a wood just by the truckstop, so maybe someone searching there.
Maybe Caniner will have some luck. I wish we knew for sure we were looking in the right place.
Any further contact from the owner Ellie?? Did they manage to speak again to the person who mentioned the dog going through the bins??
- 2014-04-26 16:17 Faye
- Just back from postering at the truckstop and had a general look around. Is this where you mean she was rooting through the bins AJD? Theyre wheelie bins so doubt she could get in them. The place has a deep ditch running at the side and wire fencing also.
- 2014-04-26 13:42 Faye
- We have been looking on Grantham lane, poster now on tickencote woods entrance. Searched field opposite on edge of woods armed with squeaky toy lead and food. Sorry no sign at all. Checked ram jam area, nothing , and all through stretton.Going to try and get out again this afternoon to poster layby with lorries parked and rubbish bins are.
- 2014-04-26 11:49 AJD
- Sorry Jayne they can! There is no restriction taking the dogs out of the country.(There should be) When we travel with our dogs via Eurotunnel, they have NEVER EVER scanned them or asked to see the PETS passport! We travel abroad several times each year with them.
However, coming back into the UK, the dogs are scanned and Passport checked at Calais (or whichever port we use) to ensure they have seen a Vet etc.
In any event, who is going to check in the sleeping area of one of the great big lorries?
The only thing is that they may have been hesitant as she is a big dog!Last edited: 2014-04-26 12:19:21 by AJD - 2014-04-26 11:42 Jayne - Founder Doglost.
- They cannot take her out of the country with out a chip and a petpassport.
- 2014-04-26 11:34 AJD
- Also concerned that a lorry driver may have picked her up!! There are a lot of foreign registered lorries that use that layby as an overnight rest stop.
I'm sorry, I can't get back there today. - 2014-04-26 11:26 The girls!
- Maybe someone could poster the bins just incase a kind hearted Lorry driver befriends her (if it ws Tia) and takes her away in vehicle. Do we know if she is a working dog - just wondering if has high prey drive in view of area (not all lurchers do)!
- 2014-04-26 10:34 AJD
- Searched again this morning - no sign. Spoke to a man who was taking his dog down to the quarry near Grantham Lane, and he said he would check there.
However, travelling up the A1,hortly after the Empingham (Grantham Lane) turn off, there is a large layby, and passing it I saw that there are a large number of wheelie bins attached to posts. Its a favourite for lorry drivers. I wonder if this is what the caller meant last night? It is immediately after a large sign for Greetham Valley Golf Course and Hotel, so it could be. Also checked the Stretton/Ram Jam area too.
I'm sorry no good news, and I'm afraid I can't check any more today as I have commitments.
Good Luck everyone. Will check back here throughout the day hoping for good news.
PS Didn't see anyone searching for her at all, as had I done so would have passed infor on as to where I had looked.
The area on either side of Grantham Lane is owned by private estates. Empingham estate and Tickencote Woodland, so difficult to gain access there. They are woods used for pheasant rearing!!!Last edited: 2014-04-26 11:35:13 by AJD - 2014-04-26 07:10 Ellie
- Thank you both. Had a phone call very late last night from owners friends who intended to stay out all night searching so I was able to let them know the area we are concentrating on Do hope Tia is found safely soon
- 2014-04-26 06:42 AJD
- Caniner, I searched the area from the A1 right down past Crossroads Farm twice yesterday, but no sign at all. Also Tickencote to Crossroads, stopping and standing atop landrover, and looking with binoculars.
I think you are right, she will come to humans once she is tired.
I am off out again now, and will look again, and also Greetham Road and round the Ram Jam services. - 2014-04-25 21:59 Caniner
- Grantham Lane goes from A1 to Empingham. Cross road approx 1 mile from A1 goes to Exton and Great Casterton. Lay by small approx quarter mile from A1. When I spoke to owner re location this fits the bill
Will check area am. Think we will need dog to get tired cross road farm has horses and dogs will poss turn up there - 2014-04-25 21:06 AJD
- I think that maybe the owner got confused about where he pulled off. Easy to do when you don't know the area. If you look at the map both exits look pretty much the same from the map. Travelling north on the A1, you would see the golf club/hotel and a very large sign, so perhaps thats where the hotel reference has come from.
There is a large service station attached to the Old Ram Jam Inn (closed up) and its very well lit, but that is after the slip road. Will be there first thing tomorrow morning anyway, so will have a really good look. Meanwhile, could someone ask the owner if there was a petrol(service station where they stopped, or was it just a country lane?? - 2014-04-25 21:01 Ellie
- If there is no hotel there, I wonder if they mean the disused one? Are there rubbish bins on the slip road near there? I wonder if this was the place they stopped and Tia is keeping to that area? I have asked them to double check but when you are not familiar with place names and panicking it's not always easy. Thank you for your help so far AJD and obviously don't put yourself in danger searching unlit roads tonight.
- 2014-04-25 20:44 AJD
- PS The only hotel in that area is attached to the Greetham Valley Golf Club. I have phoned Reception, and the very helpful lady is going to go and look and call me back.
- 2014-04-25 20:39 AJD
- There isn't a hotel on Grantham Road Empingham. There is nothing until several houses about a mile from the A1 and a farm (Crossroads Farm)- no bins for sure. There was the Ram Jam Inn further up the A1 at the Greetham turn off, but it closed down some time ago.
Its pitch black and foggy here, so it must have been somewhere that is lit.
Need more information please before I go out searching. It will have to be the morning now - had a glass of wine, and finding a black dog night on unlit country roads??
Can the owner not call the caller back?? - 2014-04-25 20:25 Ellie
- Owners received a phone call about 10 minutes ago of a sighting of a dog like Tia going through rubbish bins. This was on the slip road A1 Grantham Lane, Empingham. There is an hotel nearby but the caller did not give its name.
- 2014-04-25 20:08 AJD
- Faye coming from Barnack it the exit after the Bloody Oaks Service Station/OK Diner. The Stretton/Oakham one is too far. Been back out there again, but as you say the fog is quite thick now. Hopefully will go away from the A1 as its so noisy it may frighten her away.
- 2014-04-25 19:26 Faye
- We have just driven down the A1 from Barnack leaving at the oakham junction, through stretton /clipsham. Quite a dense fog here now and sheep and with their lambs! Not sure we've looked in the right area but no sign. Will keep eyes peeled and look again tomorrow. Hope this poor dog turns up soon sounds too near the A1 for my liking.

- Spent almost two hours searching that area without any success. The main problem is that it is quite a heavily wooded area, and the undergrowth is thick, so almost impossible to see a dog in there. Have also driven round and looked way across the fields, but no sign at all. It would have been fairly easy to spot a large black dog as the fields are mainly yellow rapeseed.
There are very few houses in that area, just the gamekeeper and a couple of farms. However, the nature of the land is such that she could have travelled miles across country.
No sign of owner or anyone else looking for the dog. Could I also suggest Rutland Radio 01572 757588 as they are very good at putting out messages for lost dogs.
Will continue to keep a look out, but feel its going to be a case of Tia finding a human when she is ready. There are streams in the area, and plenty of young rabbits, so she shouldn't go hungry.
Sorry not to have found her. - 2014-04-25 15:54 Ellie
- Have now spoken to owner. He has now had to return back home in Yorkshire but is doing all he can from there to get the word out etc. so help of local people invaluable. Tia is from a private buyer and not a rescue kennel so stressed the importance of letting them know in case Tia tries to make her way back.
There have been no sightings at all as yet. - 2014-04-25 15:38 Ellie
- Thanks everyone. Any postering help would be appreciated as owner lives out of the area.
Wonder if there are further email alerts that can go out around the LE15 area please?
Have emailed owner vets numbers for the Rutland area and will ring him later - 2014-04-25 15:27 Max - Area Co-ordinator - Cornwall & Area Volunteer - Durham & Ireland

- CORRECTION!!! Apologies for misinformation!
I think where the dog was lost is in fact Grantham lane Empingham. NOT Greetham Lane. There is a slip road off the A1 shortly after Bloody Oaks Service Station (It has an American Diner) It is still Rutland! Heavily wooded area, also lots of sheep!
Will go there now and search! - 2014-04-25 13:36 Ellie
- Thanks AJD, I will make sure owner has the Lincolnshire contacts sheet too. I will contact Rutland DW
I have now also emailed my advice sheets and will message owner as being a LE postcode I will now be the Co Ordinator, having now spoken to Helen, our Co Ordinator who originally picked this up with postcode confusion. - 2014-04-25 13:24 AJD
- Ellie - Its NOT Leicestershire, but Rutland. Its also half a mile from South Kesteven Lincolnshire. Hope this helps.
- 2014-04-25 13:19 Ellie
- I will email owner the Leicestershire contacts sheet and also put on DogLost Leicestershire Facebook, plus my own and other relevant local sites.
Stay safe until you are found Tia - 2014-04-25 13:18 AJD
- Jayne - just a thought, if you look at the maap I mentioned, just adjacent to the south side of slip road you will see a section that is in fact a showmans caravan site. I would suggest the owner asks there!!!
- 2014-04-25 13:13 AJD
- Jayne if you Google Map Stretton (enlarge the map) you will see the slip road I referred to. If you eave the A1 there, the B668 has wide grass verges which is where I am guessing the owner stopped to walk the dog. I travel that section (to walk my own dogs) two or three times each day, so can search, BUT need to know where. The situation is more worrying, as there is a huge free range chicken farm there, and also large numbers of sheep who have just lambed!!!
- 2014-04-25 13:05 Jayne - Founder Doglost.
- AJD we have been trying to piece to gether the info over the morning...but pretty certain now its the right area....tx for correcting to Greetham lane.
- 2014-04-25 12:58 AJD
- Is the owner still in the area searching for the dog?
- 2014-04-25 12:53 AJD
- I don't think it is GRANTHAM lane. but GREETHAM lane! There is a slip road off the A1 that leads to the B668 - Stretton road left at the T junction and Greetham road to the right. The turn off is just before the Ram Jam Inn. Could someone please check with the owner if there was a service station where he stopped? I will be in that area in roughly one hour, and would if possible like a little more information. Did the dog run off across the fields, or down the road???
This is in Rutland, so Barry Briggs Rutland Dog Warden needs to be contacted. He is a very helpful person. He can be reached via Rutland Council main switchboard:01572 722577 - 2014-04-25 12:33 whizzaround

- 2014-04-25 12:31 whizzaround
- bit of a long shot as guessing its prob lost further north on A1 but have informed dixans kennels on a1 at Chesterton as theyre inbetween two sets of services and opposite another.

- Never heard of Pennington - could it be Stibbington? that is split by A1 just before Wansford and from Peterborough centre ish would take 15mins. Maybe a private rehoming rather than rescue as not aware of any rescues in Peterborough other than Homes4dogs at Wansford
- 2014-04-25 12:02 Jayne - Founder Doglost.
- He was going back to Barnsley so should have been heading North but he did mention the village of Pennington he thought but that's going South....
I asked which rescue he rehomed from but he said he had replied to an ad on he thinks pets4homes...but he cannot be sure. - 2014-04-25 11:47 Helen - Regional Co-ordinator - Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge
