- Wonderful outcome. What a lovely farmer too.....how different to the 2 young spaniels a few weeks ago who were both shot by a farmer for only worrying cockerels/chickens or the like. Thank you to all concerned xxxx
- 2014-05-07 15:57 eve

- I agree mathers22. Just the natural instinct A friends dog once rounded up some cows (Presume instinct in the collie, as he was not trained to do this. But the cows were not hurt in any way, and the farmer saw the funny side. The dog must have thought "Ah well job done":-) So pleased you have them both back; of course they are not dangerous dolgs. Stay close now you pair.
- 2014-05-05 12:05 susieq666
- So glad you've got them back.
- 2014-05-05 10:58 Goldenfrodo

- 2014-05-05 10:46 mathers22
- Pleased they are home - a decent farmer. Don't worry it's just instinct when they are in the wild and hungry xx
- 2014-05-05 10:24 labradorloopy
- Really pleased to see both your dogs are home. Please don't worry about your dog and young child; the animal was starving and did what he had to do.One of my Labs has killed a neighbour's chicken and wild rabbits - yet he is the gentlest, soppiest dog you could wish for. The golden rule though is never leave a dog and child in a room/garden together unsupervised. Hope you can now all recover from the ordeal and enjoy the sunshine!
- 2014-05-05 08:00 Shelagh
- Thank god they are both home now and safe. Commonsense prevailed with farmer, as he realized the circumstances of the attack. You have all been through a terrible time and I hope you can now we joy having your babies back

- If Patch and Cookie have now been collected should they be moved to the blue? Thank you to the farmer for taking the sensible course of action, lucky dogs.

- We had an issue with one of my dogs attacking livestock and the dog warden called round and told me to always keep her on a lead around livestock - so we do. I am sure that if the dog warden had any concerns she would have told you. If you had worries about Patch and your child before then speak to a dog behaviorist for advice. I cannot see that he would be classed as a dangerous dog due to this isolated incident. Good luck xx
- 2014-05-04 11:12 Bo
- Patch - My boss had 2 lovely Labradors that have killed sheep, they are not 'dangerous' dogs. They now go out with muzzles on to prevent any issues with live stock. I would be horrified if I saw a dog attacking another animal and would wade in there to try and stop what was going on. Daft of me yes, but I would not stand by and watch it happen. Only you can decide what you want to do with your dog with ref to your child. I don't believe there is a direct correlation between the 2 events but you know your dog so its your decision. Now he has a taste of this behaviour you are going to have to either muzzle him when out or take training classes with him. Many dogs are dangerous around sheep and birds and rabbits etc. one of my terriers would rip a rabbit apart in seconds so she's on the lead apart from down the beach. We live near a beach so no issues. The other 2 terriers chase rabbits but back off when they catch up with them. None of my 3 terriers are dangerous dogs.
Your decision ultimately but if he's not dangerous around your child previously then speak to a dog behaviour expert to see what they think. Good luck. XLast edited: 2014-05-04 11:13:48 by Bo - 2014-05-04 10:41 debbie
- Under these circumstances I really don't think he would be classed as a dangerous dog, the dog was hungry and most likely in survival mode x
- 2014-05-04 10:13 Carole
- I can't believe I'm reading this! How can these dogs be blamed for this! It's not as if the owner was irresponsible! Poor dogs were stolen! It's just one of those situations that you don't expect. Surely the farmer understands this!! Just let them settle in back home and the owner enjoy having them home!!
- 2014-05-04 08:51 patch
- I wandered is he classed as dangerous dog? because since this has happened i'm not sure what the future holds as I have a child.
- 2014-05-04 08:47 patch
- everyone thanks for the great support you have shown me. yes patch is with his sister cookie. The farmer is a woman. Two weeks prior to this incident I hear the same scenario and I thought I would never have patch near any sheep. or any farm land. The farmer would not release patch until she sought advice from the dog warden Flintshire, so later he was picked up by warden and later I picked him from north clywd animal rescue centre. Yes the incident has been reported to the police and yet to hear from them. My dilemma yes he did this out of character and that he was starving. just wish to find out who stolen the dogs, they took their collars off and tags and put other collars on, they were going to keep them and wreckon they dumped them in farmland because everybody was looking for them and getting closer. Yes the farmer never shot patch because she too is an animal lover. my thoughts go with the farmer too. I'm sorry that this happened and other people in similar situation.
- 2014-05-03 20:55 Clare
- Im confused as well. Surely the farmer cant still have Patch and wouldnt be able to ask the dog warden to PTS someone elses dog? These dogs had been stolen and were clearly starving and acting out of character. I hope common sense is used here. It sounds like the farmer is a decent person as he didnt shoot first and ask questions later as so many of them seem too do lately. Good luck with getting Patch back x Last edited: 2014-05-03 20:56:04 by Clare

- I'm a little confused...is Patch still with the farmer or has he been handed to the dog warden? I hope this can be resolved soon and that common sense wins the day. Patch needs to be back home where he belongs x

- From the forum on horse and hound it appears that Cookie is the main culprit and owner is asking for advice. I can only suggest what was very successful for a good friend of mine who had a similar problem. She tied her dog to a ram and shut them in a shed for a while. The dog never even looked at a sheep after that. Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.

Any update? - 2014-05-03 09:04 duffs54
- This situation was mentioned on 5live yesterday, apparently a farmer on there said that the farmer has the right to shoot if there is no other alternative, having said that he said he would never shoot a dog. another caller said her dog had killed a ewe and it had aborted the lambs, the farmer was happy to settle with £200 compensation. So it looks like it depends on the farmer. it sounds like as he didn't kill the dog he would be open to compensation. It sounded like the onus was on the owner to sort it out directly with the farmer involved. It was very interesting as we have had a few lost dogs sadly being shot.
I hope you can resolve Patches misdemeanour's through hunger and get him back home. lovely boy xx - 2014-05-02 23:03 digbysmum

- Very sorry to hear this. Has Patch been taken by the dog warden or by the police? I will donate towards the cost of compensation for the farmer's sheep if necessary - how much will be needed?

- I sincerely hope and pray this can be sorted out - such a very sad situation to have your dogs stolen and then for this to happen. Hopefully all parties can reach an amicable conclusion and Patch can go home to his loving family. Julie.

- My sisters a police Inspector. This is not a police matter unless the farmer brings charges of the dog worrying sheep. The best way forward is to speak to the farmer directly and offer to pay him compensation. This dog has just been trying to survive - the farmer decided not to kill - please go and speak to him. Hopefully it will all be sorted without resorting to him being PTS.
- 2014-05-02 14:35 Shelagh
- What a terrible ordeal for both owner and dog. I'm sure if you explain circumstances and pay farmer things will be sorted. My thoughts are with you

- The farmer has dogs so did not shoot when Patch attacked. Owner has offered to reimburse the farmer. I spoke to her and said no one can put your dog down and to ask the dog warden for their advice....and say no to anyone that requests this...owner upset so not sure who had told her the dog must be put down.
- 2014-05-02 13:59 mathers22
- My friends daughters dog killed a couple of sheep and she went to the farmer and paid for the sheep and nothing else was said. Good luck xx
- 2014-05-02 13:23 Nikki (Tyler's mum)
- I have heard of similar issues with dogs and livestock where the owner has explained the issue to the farmer, paid the price of the livestock and had their dog returned, would this not be possible?
- 2014-05-02 11:26 Jayne - Founder Doglost.
- Spoken to owner.
- 2014-05-02 11:01 patch
- patch has been found but the dilemma is that he has been found in a farm not his fault somebody had stolen the dogs. now we face the heartache of patch being put down because obviously he was starving and killed a ewe and cockerels. just thought id let you all know. im totally devastated for having him missing and now face losing him for good, what do I tell my little girl. any ideas!
- 2014-05-01 18:15 AlisonH
- Cookie has now been found and picked up in North Clwyd and there has been a sighting of Patch at Bagil, Flintshire by the dog warden. Bumping due to the sighting.
