Here is the story in action as it happened from ...................
Market Cross Veterinary Clinic..................
CAPTAIN HAS BEEN FOUND!!!!!
Fantastic news - Captain has been found in Newbattle woods today. Amazingly, other than a few ticks, matted bits and a much slimmer waistline he is looking pretty good. He is certainly enjoying his snacks here at the vets A massive thank you to Alison who initially found him and to Gill who also came out to help. Our nurse Averil was despatched with a slip lead and some biscuits. After an 'exciting' scramble through the undergrowth and up and down bankings she managed to locate Alison, Gill, Captain and Tiggy (Alison's dog). After a few doggy biscuits (Tiggy helped!) they had made friends with Captain and managed to get him out the woods and into Averil's car. He's now safe and sound here at Market Cross awaiting pick up. His mum was delighted to hear he'd been found is currently hot footing it back from Yorkshire to get him. A happy ending all round !

- 2014-09-26 22:05 pixies peeps
- Does anyone know if the owner contacted the other person (Chris Johnson), suggested by beardie in need , for help please.
- 2014-09-24 19:31 Taffitom
- All traps have been removed to encourage Captain to return to his feeding station . It is essential that we keep him in the area and under close surveillance . There is an on going recapture plan in place that requires delicate handling due to Captain's mistrust and total fear of humans - please do not venture near the woods or feeding station as this might drive him away and jeopardise his chances of being caught but thank you for all your support and concern for this little boy .
- 2014-09-22 23:02 BorderCol
- Would he follow the trail of a bitch on heat into an enclosed building or yard?

- So glad Captain is doing better, was so worried about him. Hopefully he will be home soon, sounds like everybody is working so hard to achieve this. Well done Team Captain!Xxx
- 2014-09-16 19:05 Taffitom
- Captain is still continuing to visit his feeding station late at night and getting quality food down him and the foxes now appear to have accepted him and in fact follow him on his retreat into the woods - surveillance cameras show no signs of him going anywhere near the trap and it would appear that he has learnt they are now a threat to him despite this trap being heavily disguised and better positioned - he sure is an intelligent dog with strong survival skills :) plan D is now in place so hopefully we will get some positive responses tonight but its going to be patience, perseverance and trust that will catch this little boy - fingers crossed again 🙏 the nearby community including the council are a extremely supportive and helpful : )

- Thank you Jane - I've passed on your offer to the lady who is holed up every night monitoring. Things are going as well as can be in that his pattern of movement has been established and it's getting to be a routine timing wise. He apparently looks a bit better - just time patience and a lot of luck.

- I live just up the road and I am willing to help, please get in touch if you need me for anything
- 2014-09-12 09:42 Bo
- Captain was circling the feeding station last night but wary of the trap. The DL helper thinks he's shadowing the foxes rather than running with them. They are using fox repellant to try and separate them when feeding. Foxes are super alert to the trap and make a racket when Captain goes near it.

- I understand Beardies in need shirley has been in contact with the owner and an alternative persons contact has been given to her who could help. Hopefully the owner will contact them.
- 2014-09-11 18:06 Bo
- Taffi has been with the owner and met with a person from the Scottish SPCA who provided an excellent trap for them to use. Captain has been seen with the foxes so the assumption now is they are all getting on together and the comments about him being attacked may be true - but peace has been restored. It seems the kindly local folk regularly feed the foxes every night and Captain has joined this ritual. So they know whereabouts he is and they have a plan to try and gain his trust before catching him. The slight issue of him befriending Mr. Fox and his pals means the trap needs to repel the Fox family and attract Captain. Mmmm - Taffi is all of it. She's dressed for the part tonight with NVG's and cameras set up. Good luck x
- 2014-09-11 16:25 rusmum
- I went walking around the woodland today, near the river, where he has been seen but nothing. Just a question though, there is a college near by in the woodland on the Esk and a small industrial estate - have they been postered. Don't know where on the river he has been sighted but he may go scavenging in their bins. Just a thought
- 2014-09-11 16:15 pixies peeps
- I understand Martyn may have moved and not be doing beardie rescue now. I am trying to see if another person can contact the owner with advice (they may not be local)
- 2014-09-11 15:14 Bo
- Taffi has hooked up with the owner and they are meeting someone who has a large trap shortly. The chap Martyn she can't get hold of as the number given is apparently wrong (Taffi just rang me to ask if we can get the right number). Does anyone know his number and can pass it on again please - it may be the owner wrote it down wrong but either way - it doesn't work. Captain is running with the foxes apparently - joined them it seems. He's been in the RSPCA trap twice but it caught his leg second time so more wary now. The trap was an old fashioned type but the one arriving today is more modern Taffi has been told. He's taking food so at least getting some nutrients inside him. - A doglost helper called Taffi is heading up to Scotland now in her van (from Liverpool area). It will take her about 5 hours to get there and she has just collected some night vision goggles just now. Captains owner is aware -

- Things have gotten worse with situation with captain. He has an injured front leg and is unable to stand properly. Last note he was unable to get any of food left as three foxes kept nipping at him. Owner is making last ditch attempt to night to net him. She has not been able to contact Marty and time is running out for captain. If anybody is near to her please try to help her

- this is the facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/groups/119450541562945/
comments about trapping and local complaining that cats might get caught- if they do they are released so cannot see any problem. Traps need to be checked regularity so if owners state they will sit out _I cannot see why this is an issue.
they only need to be close enough to hear if trap goes off or they chek it frequently. Dog is in a set area. advice to scent areas and use bait over areas then how to disguise trap and what to use to bait. As area is known there is no point in a tracker dog and it could frighten him further away esp as does not like strangers. - 2014-09-05 13:01 debbie

- 2014-09-05 09:56 Helen - Dog SOS Derbyshire
- Found link on Facebook on site called pets forever lost and found and reunited sorry can't copy link but owners says they have had to remove traps due to people complaining about foxes and cats being trapped so they have had to go back to sitting out and trying to tempt him but he is too frightened!X
- 2014-09-05 09:50 CJ - Police Liaison & SE Regional Coordinator
- Have just spoken to wildlife expert re foxes. he says foxes do not attack they will run way. Did someone see this or is it hearsay. I have sent a long email re trapping best methods etc plus a trick to keep foxes away using human hair .I got email from owner by text.
He uses it himself for his geese and fowls and has not had a fox come near them. - 2014-09-05 09:45 Helen - Dog SOS Derbyshire
- Thank you. Don't think he has got his own Facebook page it is just what I have read from shares from various groups. I did read that they were having problems with trap due to foxes attacking him but you would need to clarify this with owner if I can find information I will try and copy link. Don't think owner checks this page probably best to contact via mobileX
- 2014-09-05 07:54 CJ - Police Liaison & SE Regional Coordinator
- I would need to ask how trap was set up. what do they mean by failed? do they just mean did not catch him or did they mean they caught another animal? Has trap been disguised something like leaves grass etc placed over the wire base and over the top making it more like a den or has it just been left as a trap with nothing.
I cannot see the need to track as they know area where the dog is .
It takes time and patience to trap an animal. Collies are very canny creatures and if things do not seem right they will avoid.
I will send and email to owner. In mean time which facebook is this all on can any one please put a link here??
With so many faceobbok set up owners really need to keep in contact by using this page. Its best to communicate with those with experience of catching dogs rather than numerous ideas put out by others offering help but often without in depth knowledge. - 2014-09-05 00:42 Helen - Dog SOS Derbyshire
- Any news on Captain. Things sound pretty desperate on Facebook postings and it sounds like time is running out for him.Is there anybody who can offer the owners further advice or help with tracking,it had been reported on Facebook that he is looking very thin and traps have been tried but he has been attacked by foxes, so worried for this boy.
- 2014-09-04 23:39 zen
- has this dog got a facebook page that the owners are commenting on? why did the two attempts using a trap fail do we know?
- 2014-08-31 23:59 Shelagh
- Had text from owner tonight. Two failed attempts with trap. Foxes are attacking captain now. He hasn't shown up for last two nights. Owners doing barbeque etc. Things are pretty desperate now,as owner feels they are running out of time, because captain is so very thin. If anybody can offer any advice, please let owner know. Contact her via mobile as don't think she looking on here

- Can someone bump Captains page due to recent sighting. Owner needs help and people willing to camp out and set up food stations.
- 2014-08-26 21:59 TK - Area Volunteer, East Sussex
- On Scotlands missing dogs fb page it says Captain has been spotted by a lady who feeds foxes, eating some of their food.... reassuring now there has been a recent sighting... lots of helpful comments being posted, think the main thing is the owners need to take familiar bedding/clothing to the area and set up a feeding station, maybe camping out there late eve.... If anyone local can help out..?
Maybe area co ordinator can follow this recent sighting up & advise....Also maybe the page could be bumped due to sighting..? Fingers crossed x - 2014-08-26 15:22 Mrs Mop

- Hi, I am not sure. I am not Captains owner but saw his owners update on Fb and thought I would share here to see if anybody could give her some suggestions as it seems the situation is urgent. I will pass your comments on but it might be an idea if you can contact her direct. My understanding is that local charities have not been very helpful and I am not sure she would know where to source a trap from so any help in that area, I presume, would be useful.Last edited: 2014-08-25 21:39:48 by coralvb

- Hi Coral,
Has Captain has been seen scavenging in the same place more than once? If so can you get someone to set up a feeding station in a quiet safe place nearby. Once he gets used to food being left in that place at the same time every day he will soon fall in to a routine of returning there to feed and in that way you can ensure that he will at least be getting enough to eat. Once a feeding station has been established and he feels safe visiting it everyday without being disturbed you can then set up a dog trap nearby and gradually move the food bowl nearer to the trap and eventually put the food inside the trap. If after a few days he is comfortable going into the trap to feed then is the time to set the trap but once the trap has been set you need to be able to watch it 24/7 from a safe distance making sure that no other animal is caught in there. - 2014-08-25 21:16 coralvb
- Have just read this update for Captain on Facebook 22/8- is there nothing that can be done to help?
