Thanks Nik its been quiet for so long now, it would be good to have more sightings, although she could be anywhere by now. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Given that trails hounds are not native to Devon, a letter to 24 farms covering the areas where Meg was spotted is being mailed today. It reminds them that Meg is missing, describes her characteristics and reminds them that she of no problem to livestock etc.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It does seem to mean something with these sightings in that particular area. The Killerton Estate has a large shoot on there so just wondering if she is living on roadkill/gamebirds etc. It just gives you some hope when you hear things like this. It would be great if it was Meg. I am always hoping for some good news. Thinking of you Meg.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Isn't it strange how many 'sightings' are coming in from exactly the same general area ..... if this hound is Meg and is full of energy surely she's found a source of food for starters. So somebody must know something about this hound - especially with all the publicity that's been going on in and around Stoke Canon. God, I hope this is finally Meg! There were lots of Hunts out over this area on Boxing Day though, and this hound could have come from any one of them. Jan.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just been speaking to a lady in the Silverton area of Devon and she has reported seeing a hound on Boxing Day running down past the area of Silverton Mill towards Killerton Woods. This lady has described this dog as having bloodhound ears and the body being very dark and looking like a mottled grey on its back. She noticed the dog as it was really running quite hard as if it had a purpose. I have phoned the Silverton Foxhound kennels as these kennels are very close to this area. Yes the Hunt was out on Boxing Day and no they hadn't got a missing foxhound. The hunt say they were nowhere near this area on Boxing day. Of course it could have been a foxhound who went in the wrong direction and then realised and was trying to catch up the pack. The dog looked quite well and full of energy. If anyone is in this area, could they please keep a look out just in case it is Meg. The description of a grey mottled back colour could be the condition Meg's coat is in with being out for so long. Iam informing people I know in the area and of course I cant get hold of the Dog Warden's today but I will follow this up just in case. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well done, Eileen. No wonder you're exhausted. The only other thing I can think of is flyers to everyone's house or a mail shot using the electoral roll. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have phoned absolutely everyone I can think of and the other day spent 3 hours ringing all the numbers you kindly sent me. I have phoned clerks to the council, hotels, B&B places, industrial estates local vets and Iam in constant touch with the dog wardens. It is certainly a mystery unless of course this lady found the owner of this dog. I questioned the original lady who's door this lady went to with the dog and she has since said that this dog didn't look very houndy and looked well fed. She also said she knew what foxhounds looked like as she often saw them out as the kennels are not too far away. She said this dog was stood very happily on the lead and didn't bat an eyelid when she opened the door. Knowing Meg I would have thought she would have been so nervous by this time she would have been trembling and not looking relaxed. She also said the dog looked older than 3 years old. I know that people see different things and Iam still following this up just in case. I also put it on radio devon asking this lady to come forward. At the moment I feel I have exhausted every avenue and there is not a lot else I can do until we get a sighting. We will not give up until we know what has happened to her. Eileen, I'm assuming you've spoken to local rescues to check whether the mystery woman has handed 'Meg' over.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Trailhoundmum. I have spoken to the Exeter dog warden again this morning and she has phoned the East Devon warden and also the mid Devon. Nothing as yet has been reported to them. Also the police said they would phone me if anyone reported to them. It could be of course that this lady has found the owner of the dog or has just kept her. The dog warden says sometimes people keep a dog for weeks before they report it. Hope something turns up today. I will be here all day in case of a phone call. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I spoke to Eileen last night about this. I have phoned a friend who lives in the Politmore area, she has been aware that Meg is missing as she's seen all the posters. She will contact her neighbour who knows most people in the area, and they will both ask around. She quite rightly said that if you want to know anything Stoke Canon post office is the place to go, as there are no shops in Poltimore. Everything crossed that this is Meg. Maybe the lady will contact the dog warden today. Stoke Canon comes under East Devon, but its worth trying Exeter and Mid Devon as well. I'd love to see her in the blue today.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Possible scenario: Meg is seen scavenging around house of mystery lady. Lady starts putting out tasty food for her and gradually after a month reassures her enough to take food from hand and then get collared and brought in. Does that make sense, Eileen?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It is all very confusing as I was told by the prospective owner that this lady who had phoned had definately got Meg. When I phoned she said no she hadn't got Meg but thought she had seen her earlier yesterday. I have no details of where this lady was from or how long she had had this dog. I cant imagine if this is Meg how she has caught her and how she was calmly standing at someones door with a collar and lead on looking quite well after being out for the past month. I get the feeling that this lady hadn't had the dog long as she hadn't seen any of the posters about a missing dog and was just enquiring around the area. This was around 10'oclock in the morning and I got the phone call at 4,30 in the afternoon so I just managed to catch the dog wardens before the went home. The Police also have no reports about anyone reporting a dog. It is all very mysterious but I will be speaking again today to the dog wardens to try and get a lead on this woman. I just hope she sees a poster and phones. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Me too had to read the latest several times before it made sense!! So we don't know if the woman came out of a car/lives locally. It all might explain why Meg hasn't been seen since the early days, if she's been taken in - but how did this woman manage to catch her ..........Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for alerting me to this, Phebe. Eileen, I had to read this three times before I could get my head round it !!! Firstly, let's get the poster changed and mailed out again. Secondly, PM me your email address and I will send you the database I complied for Stoke Canon. I have moved the two hotels and four clerks to Parish Councils to the top of the list. I had a very strange phone call earlier today. I got a call from the man who originally was to be Meg's new owner and I think someone had seen his number on one of our old posters. He phoned to say that Meg had been caught but he couldn't do anything about it as he was on a train and wouldn't be home until the 30th December. He gace me a number however to say that this lady had Meg. I phoned this number which is an Exeter number and this lady said that a lady knocked at her door today to ask if anyone had lost a dog and she was standing there with this dog. The lady who I spoke to didn't take much notice as she wasn't aware of a dog missing until she went to Stoke Canon Post Office and saw the poster with Meg on it. On speaking to this lady she cant give a very good description and cant remember if the dog had long ears but was definately black with brown on her legs. She hasn't a clue where this lady came from and got no details at all. I have phoned two dog wardens and the police and nobody has reported having found a dog so Iam left with the lady who saw this dog who lives in between Stoke Canon and Poltimore but hasn't a clue where this other lady came from. I have asked the lady who saw this dog to check with her neighbours if they had anymore details or a clue as to where this lady lives. This is so frustrating as it is the right area and right colour of dog but she said the dog was just quite happy standing there on the lead. I will update further if I get anymore calls. If anyone can think of anything else to try and trace this lady, please let me know. Thanks. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Murf's mom. I put this on dogpages and other forums as soon as Meg went missing and there has been loads of publicity about her. Iam going to have a go at the television people again as it maybe that she is now well out of this area and I think we do need further coverage. It is now over a month since Meg went missing and we do desperately need a sighting. Will report any more news as soon as I know anything more. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Murf's Mum. There is a line of thought that Meg may be trying to make her way back to Cumbria. If that is the case, then there needs to be a national perspective to this. Perhaps Eileen could follow this up.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

As you don't know which area meg is in it might be worth posting on the dog pages and rescue dog both are on the net. The two organisations have followers all over england and both have lost and found pages (All free) so at least that way she can't slip through the net in another area. Hope this helps i check on her every day just in case shes blue. Dani xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I will try East Devon tomorrow. I didn't speak to the contact direct as she was on air at the time. The person I spoke to did say he would speak to her but I got the feeling that it wasn't her decision. I do intend to phone again tomorrow. They asked if I had a moving picture of her and I said no but there are loads of moving trailhounds on a video on our website. They did say they would have a look. I think the only way is to keep pestering them which I will do until I get an answer. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

no further sightings of Meg unfortunately. I have approached the television people and they said if they were interested they would give me a ring but I dont really hold out much hope. It is a long time now since we had a sighting and yesterday I checked with the environmental health depts in two areas to see if the council had picked up any RTA dogs. Exeter council had no reports of any dogs and Mid Devon has had one terrier in 8 months. I really hope there is a new sighting soon as it is hopeless until we have an idea of the area that Meg is in. *sigh* back to the drawing board then :-( But as Nik says, there are now a lot more people watching out for Meg, and I also am more inclined to think she is somewhere less built up with some decent hunting available. Many thanks to DW for pulling the other dog in and eliminating it from the search.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

That's very disappointing news, Eileen. I must say that I was surprised that Meg had ventured towards such an urban area. Still, there are a load more people who know about her and the area is close to Stoke Canon. Let's wait and see if there are any more sitings. (And I hope the DW dealt with the GSD X owners appropriately.)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just had some very disappointing news from the Dog Warden. She has just phoned to say that yesterday she picked up a dog on Summerway Road and she feels that this is the dog everyone has been seeing around this estate. The bitch was very very nervous and was very dark and thin. It was a german shepherd cross with its ears floppy but not what you would call hound ears. She has returned the dog to its owner who lives on Summerway and apparently this dog is always getting out. This is devastating news and as the dog warden says, people do not have a good description of dogs when reporting them but she does feel that this is who they have been seeing around this area. I did think it strange that Meg was appearing in a built up area as she does live on the fell away from houses but I thought it could have been her as she would have been desperate for food. Maybe a coincidence? I dont know, but we will keep up this search until we know for sure. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Meg slipped her collar on the first day so, no collar. When I was searching the little play area where she had been seen running towards the previous evening, there was a patch of scrub in the corner which I nosed around. I saw Lotty, my trailhound, munching away on something and I think it was the sausages someone had put down earlier! If Meg had been there, she would have sniffed out that food. I think it is a priority to get some posters up around the estate and surrounding area if anyone would offer, I will post them some posters. Sainsburys said they have nowhere to put up a poster. Can anyone take one to Lidl which is very near where she was seen? Also, there is a wholesale butchers on the corner of Summerway Road. Can anyone take a poster there?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Good suggestion about leaving food out somewhere for her. I PM'd this suggestions earlier. I know she's moving around, but is there somewhere in the area that she's been seen most often that would be appropriate? It may be that some other animal would pick it up, but she's been out there for so long on her own, and I believe it's only by building up some sort of connection with her that's going to make it possible to catch her. Food is the obvious choice I'd think. I assume she doesn't have a collar on now?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Earlier I sent Meg's details to Exeter Flying school and airport as they are frequently above the area and may notice her roaming. Could it be worth asking the local scouts and/or TA to help with the search. Is anyone leaving food out for her, she must be desperate poor girl. Has local radio been involved? I wish I lived nearer to help in person. She is in my prayers. Hilary & FlyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just spoken to the Dog Warden again this morning and nothing else has been reported to her as yet. She is going to the area again this morning and does know the area very well. Apparently Meg could quite easily have got to this area from Stoke Canon area where she was previously seen. Most of the sightings have been very early in the morning or after dark apart from one sighting which was around 3'oclock in the afternoon. She must be desperate for food now as it is nearly a month since she has been lost. Please everyone in the area keep looking as we really need to catch her now. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes very frustrating to meet people who thought they had seen her yesterday then nothing today. We are so lucky to have some dedicated helpers in the area but we could really do with some more people in the area to call on at short notice, I feel. (It is a 240 mile round trip for me). Are there any dog training clubs in Exeter which we could contact to see if their members would help put a few posters up on the housing estates in that area? I have to say, today and on the previous 2 weekends when I was there, local people we spoke to have been really helpful and interested.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sue and I have been out this afternoon with our hounds (also local dog lost helper Kate with her dogs) in the Summerway area of Exeter it is a big housing estate, leading to a small industrial estate. We have spoken to a lot of dog walkers about 3 had seen a dog of Megs discription in the last few days. One was yesterday in the afternoon heading down Warick Road, a car had to stop for her as she was in the middle of the road. We both walked the areas that Meg had been seen, a field leading off Willow Way, and a playing field which lead back to Beacon Heath near St James School. But there was no sign of her today, and our hounds didn't scent her. Lots of people are aware of her in the area thanks to Kate (dogs lost helper) putting up lots of posters. Also thanks to the Greyhound rescue who have had helpers in the area over the last few days. Lets hope that working together that we can get her home soon. Stay safe Meg.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There has been another sighting of Meg last night at around 6pm. The report was that she is very thin but was running down a road Called Willow Way which is off the Summerway Road area. She is obviously coming into this area early morning and when it goes dark and we need to find where she is holding up. There are people in the area at the moment and a doglost helper has been out there plus two greyhound people this morning. We need as many people as possible to cover this area for an organised search. Great news about the sighting. I was out of the area today in North Devon so was unable to join in the search. Summerway Road/Whipton is a very built up area of Exeter, and if it is Meg it must be hunger that is making her hang around there. I will try to get out there tomorrow and help with the search. Thanks Jayne and Nik. A local helper has been out with posters in the area and there have been a few people looking in this area this afternoon. The local helper was speaking to a man who again had seen this dog 2 days ago in the Summerway Road area and when asked about her he did say she had LONG FLOPPY EARS. It certainly does sound like Meg and Iam hoping that someone will phone from the area. There are also people out tonight looking in the area. If this was the same dog that was sighted this morning, it does look like she has been around there for a few days. There is a large field near to there and the local dog walkers are also on the look out. Will update any further news. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The Dog Warden has gone to the area to look for Meg and as yet no more sightings. I hope to get other people in this area as soon as possible. I have also put an update on Radio Devon. I believe it is a large housing estate where they may be a few dogs on the loose but I have questioned the elderly man who can only remember the colours which is black body and tan legs and she was very frightened. Hopefully someone may phone ar get another sighting later as apparently this dog has been seen for a couple of days now.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There has been a possible sighting of Meg this morning in the area of Summerway Road Off Pinhoe Road Nr the village of Whipton. An elderly man has reported seeing this little dog for the past couple of days hanging around. Is there anyone who can go to this area to check this out. This is so frustrating as the lady who would have normnally be there in minutes is away today in a totally different area. I have left a message for the dog warden and Iam ringing around for anyone who may be able to help. Please if anyone can check this out please take some food with you. Thanks. The dog involved in the RTA was not Meg. Sadly, that dog was in a car involved in the accident. It got out of the car and was run over.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just checked with Exeter Police about the car accident involving a dog being killed. The dog was actually travelling in one of the cars and was trapped in the car. When it was freed it ran into the passing traffic and was killed. This area was not a long way from where Meg was last seen so it was worth checking it out. Hope you are somewhere safe Meg, please show yourself soon. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just to correct a spelling mistake - the dog was going down Wrefords Lane towards Cowleigh Bridge. Interestingly, this is right by where we thought we had a sighting of Meg before and when we got there all we could see was a collie. There are some cottages right by Cowleigh Bridge that seem to have a number of collies so maybe it comes from there. If so, it would have had to cross a really busy bit to get back home.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

2 things to add here. This isnt exactly related but lady from the area rang me (my number and SallyAnns are on poster). Today she saw a very nervous thin collie (possible bitch) at Refords Lane going down towards Cowleigh Bridge Road. It had a collar on with a heart shaped disc. It was so nervous, she could not get near it. I have checked missing dogs going back 4 pages but cannot see a dog like that on here. Also, she saw a small piece of news in her local paper. There was a 2 car accident recently caused by a stray dog which was killed, on Cullompton/Sowton road.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I was able to talk a little bit about Trailhounds and give a detailed description of Meg and where she was last sighted. Fingers crossed someone will ring with news of Meg, we desperately need to know she is ok. Will update of course if I hear anything more. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks, jmay, for the info about John Govier. As it's a phone-in, there's zero chance that he'd remember - even though he's got a lab. I think the best bet is for a few of the closest involved to try to get on the show Mon-Fri 10pm-1am on 08459 222269. I'll back this up with a news release to his personal email. Meanwhile, I'll review on whole publicity thing on Friday.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes there is is site at Sowton Trading Estate, Exeter this is a static gypsy site no temp travellers pitches. They keep lurchers and terriers as far as I'm aware. This is such a busy area industrial dual carridgeways/ motorway that I don't think Meg would have been tempted here. Value wise trailhounds are not valuable pedigree dogs, but as with all pets priceless to their owners. I'm at a loss that we have had no more sightings of her. I try to stay positive, but the weather has been terrible here with many rivers flooding and gale force winds I cant help think that it must be very tough out there with no regular meals. Maybe she has moved away from the Exeter area, it is going to be very differcult with out major publicity to get anymore sightings. The other problem is no communication between agencies, police file missing dogs with missing hand bags etc, and from what i can see they dont keep a central registrar, and you need to contact every individual police station. Dog wardens can put dogs into kennels some distance from where they were picked up, and then she could have been mistaken for a mongeral/crossbreed.!!! Oh the list goes on, so many if's and buts. If we could just get somemore sightings to give us somewhere to look. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Still keep thinking about this dog. When walking my dogs today suddenly a thought came to mind. Are there any travlers camps in the area i am sure there is one near Exeter somewhere might be worth a snoop they could have taken him in. i presume he is worth a lot of money what about a reward or may be a physic.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hoping against hope that this 'sighting' could be Meg, BUT if she's shy and more importantly, not used to built-up areas, imo the only way she'd be on a roundabout in Plymouth would surely be if she'd been picked up and dumped there? (maybe she was let go because the person realised she was 'hot' - found the tattoos?). I hope you guys can get a description of that poor dog. And yes, we've had horrendous wind and rain down here in the past week or so, but there are dry places!! If the reason there have been no further sightings is because she's been taken in by somebody (please God!), I think publicity is the only way to make sure people know she's being looked for! Stilll hoping.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The radio devon program that i heard about the dog on the roundabout at plymouth was the John Goviers late night radio show from 10pm to 1am. thinking of it it could have been Friday. Sorry if i have confused things but i thought it could possibly be a sighting.maybe there is away of getting on the John Goviers show which is on every night It is a phone in programe.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Nik, thanks for that. I have phoned Radio Devon 3 times today and asked about this to be told it was impossible to go through all the recording of Saturday night and said the only thing I could do would be to phone them next Saturday to ask the presenter. I was very firm but polite but this man wasn't very helpful at all. I know this is a long shot and it could have been any dog running around this roundabout but there isn't even a description of this dog. As I said before, I have rung the necessary authorities in Plymouth but I dont hold out much hope. She has to be somewhere and I cant understand why she isn't being seen. I know that Devon have had the worst rainfalls in 18 years which Iam sure isn't helping. If you can think of anything else Nik, please let me know. Thanks. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Eileen, at that time of night BBC Devon's output would be networked and may or may not have been coming out of Plymouth. If it was, then try the CSV Action Desk at BBC Plymouth and ask them to check the (recorded) log. They'll try to give you an excuse, but lean on them. If it didn't come out of Plymouth then we could contact the presenter direct and hope s/he has a good memory.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks JMay. I have phoned radio Devon this morning who say they cant recollect this and no notes were kept of it. I have also phoned Plymouth Police and the dog Wardens. It is a long shot but there are no more sightings in the area she has been in previously and Iam told that Exeter is approx 40 miles from Plymouth so it isn't an impossibility. I have also phoned the local dog pound in Plymouth who have taken in a jack russell and a labrador over the weekend but nothing resembling Meg, Heres hoping for some positive news soon. Had a long chat to the dog warden today and she hasn't had one report about Meg. She is also in contact with other dog wardens and nothing. I cant see anyone would be able to get hold of Meg unless she was ill or very weak but everything has gone so quiet on sightings. Iam wondering if she has now moved on to another area but we really need a sighting to get people out there. The dog warden has suggested I contact the local television station and get a report on there. It is something to consider as our website has a video link to hound trailing and I may get their interest with her being a breed that Devon people dont know much about. If anyone would like to have a look at our website it is www.trailhoundtrust.co.uk EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have spoken to the police recently and was told, we will ring you if anyone reports this dog. I speak to the dog wardens on a regular basis. I spoke to the dogs Trust right at the start and have spoken again since to the Manager. There are loads of emails and faxes about Meg from loads of groups in Devon and Iam trying to get in touch with the Western Morning news again about getting the number wrong. When I spoke to them yesterday they said they would do a follow up when Meg was found and I said it is now we need the publicity not when she is found. I will have another go today to see if they will repeat it as the telephone number was wrong so it made the article useless. Hope for a sighting soon. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have yhe police and kennels been checked regularly. In my experience dogs can be moved over wide areas and can get lost in the system. What about the caninie defence kennels at Ilfraconbe Nothh Devon they take dogs from a very wide area. I could extend the mailing SW of Stoke Canon, either side of the A396 unless you think there is a better spot to concentrate on. We are pretty sure that the New Buildings sighting was a false alarm. I went out there with Tish, and a collie cross dog (it was black & Tan) which was very nervous, followed us when we set off from the car, it was hanging around out side a motor repair place, when we returned it was justing getting into a mechanics van and going home for the night. I've have spoken to a lady from the grey hound rescue, who saw Meg between Stoke Canon and Exeter on Tuesday 21st, and we all feel that it was a definate sighting, she was also seen on Thursday 16th the day after she went missing in the same area by serveral people they stopped the traffic and tried to catch her but she was too frightened to get anywhere near them. We have also been told on that day the owner of the petrol station near Thorverton phoned the police because she was on the main road, but they didn't respond. we were out at first light yesterday searching hoping for a firm sighting, talking to people, and putting up lots of posters. I even walked over to her new owners farm were the hunt were meeting and handed out slips with the phone numbers on. The others were out again early this morning, but I planned to spend some time with my daughter. We had a sighting come in at cowley Bridge on the outskirts of Exeter going towards Exwick, but after a search a collie was found in a churchyard which is where the lady saw the dog, it lived locally and ran home. Still waiting for that vital firm sighting that can be acted on immediatly. But it really is needle in a haystack, with so many places she could be holed up. She could even have been tempted in and be sat by someones fire!!!! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just looking back on these posts - a few days ago somebody apparently saw a dog answering Meg's description round the Newbuildings/Morchard Bishop area. As, unless there's been a breakthrough today, she's not been seen in the Stoke Canon area for some days now, is it worth regrouping and looking/asking round the other side of Crediton?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
Fly
Just an idea but it might be worth leaving posters with local helicoper school/hire places and flying schools (like us) as they cover quite a lot of local ground and notice changes and can pinpoint locations. Its brilliant to see how much dog lovers care and how far they will travel to help another owner. Fingers crossed that you find Meg soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We reread the Express & Echo and saw that the piece did go in after all. Sorry, we thought it hadnt at first. No more phone calls today and no sightings despite there being 4 of us checking footpaths and woods and fields. There has been a lot of flooding in the area due to heavy rain. No new sightings today. Have a feeling she has moved on. SallyAnn got hold of Silverton Hunt today, who knew nothing about Meg being missing, they said had they known that she was in their area they would have sent out a huntsman with hounds, and their terrier man. It seems that her prospective new owner has done nothing to try and find her, just written her off!!! leaving it to people who although have never met her are the one who care, real animal lovers. There is going to follow up artical in the Express & Echo tomorrow, explaining aout the sport of trail hound racing, with the trail hound trust web site address so people will be able to watch the video, and of course highlighting that Meg is still missing. Have been back to the area late afternoon, have put out some more posters and updated some of existing, tried for busy places in the villages a couple of primary schools, and the only garage on the A379 between Rewe and Thorverton he was a dog lover and has put it on his door Did one car park in Stoke Woods the main one is closed because of tree felling quite a bit of big machinery working, also there is a paintball attraction nearby think Meg maybe will avoid the woods. Tomorrow will try to do Poltimore and Stoke Hill which leads right into Exeter from Stoke Canon. Dissapointed no more sightings, we need to contact East Devon DC dog warden as some of this area comes under them and not Exter or Mid Devon and they don't communicate with each other. Thanks to everyone for what you are all doing. I have had trailhounds for 15 years and I help to re-home them as pets all over the Country. If Meg had even had a first feed at her new destination she probably would have hung around. The fact that she slipped her lead within minutes of arriving, she has no reason to go back there as it was already dark when she went. People who are looking in the area are carrying food and preferably in a small white container which she would have been called in to when she was a racing hound. I have tried the Silverton kennels on numerous occasions and it is always the answerphone. I have left messages but nobody has got back to me as yet. She may be attracted by hearing hounds in kennels and that is why she has stayed in this area. According to phone calls I have had, the sighting of her on Wednesday 16th November was the day after she went missing and then she was seen last Tuesday in the same area of Stoke Canon so she has been around there for 6 days. Iam hoping for a further sighting soon and I will update if anything comes through. Thanks. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

All dogs love disused railway lines, with good hunting and no traffic. In fact everybody loves them for recreation - walkers, riders, offroad cyclists, so if this one is open for use like that please get some posters up at entrance points.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've also spotted a disused railway line that runs along the Exe and swings round into Stoke Cannon. Hounds love disused lines and she may have come down it. Not on the route for a circle, but might be worth investigating. Has anyone spoken to the SW Trains & Network Rail control rooms given that a line runs alongside the A396. Just another thought - having watched Trail Hounds running in the Lakes, I noticed they came in to their handlers rattling bowls of food - so it might help to take along some dry food in a stainless bowl to shake to see if she'll break cover which she might if she's hungry enough.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

About hounds swinging round - yes, Bassets hunt like that, although it has to be said perhaps only because hares run in circles over a large area? But this might be what she's doing. Well that's great news about the sightings. Have the Silverton Foxhounds people been told about Meg? Might they be able to leave food out regularly and gain her confidence to come in? Just a thought because obviously sightings are one thing, but picking her up quite another. Would a baited cage be worth considering? Would it be any help if I came down with my hounds? Thanks Beaglemum thats great. I would just say to people that Meg will have no road sense at all and I think that this is the main worry. When trailhounds are out racing on the fells in Cumbria, if they do have to cross a road, there are scouts out with red flags stopping all the traffic until every hound is safely across the road so she will not fear the roads as she will expect everything will stop. She may be hanging around this area of Stoke Canon as it is very close to the Silverton Foxhound kennels and she may be attracted by hound noise. If anyone is in the area please check Stoke woods and along the A396 close to a tractor place where she was seen. Thanks. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Tonight I have updated the Petsearch people and my contacts with the latest news on sightings. One lady told me that there is a lot of dead pheasants on the road in that area so there will be a food source for Meg at least but the negative side of that is that it may encourage her to take risks on the road. I do hope that she keeps safe until she can get help. It is good to know that she is around at least. Hope now that someone can get close to her and catch her. Going to be difficult I think but I am feeling more optimistic about things. Keep safe Meg. Will keep thinking about you.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Trailhoundmum. Just to add that it is going to be very difficult to catch Meg as one lady tried to catch her with a scarf. The traffic was brought to a halt as she was in fact walking down the middle of the A396 Tiverton to Exeter Road and looking very bewildered. If anyone does spot Meg you will need some food to try and get closer to her. Thanks to everyone for their help and especially to trailhoundmum who has been brilliant in going out to look for Meg. Sightings are now coming in through the posters and news coverage in the area. EileenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
trailhoundmum:
Meg has been in both the Express and Echo and Crediton Gazzette and at last we have some sightings. This afternoon on my way home from work in Exeter I headed out towards Tiverton and left posters in Stoke Canon, Thorverton, Silverton The Blue Cross Kennels and Cheriton Fitzpane. On my way back home I had a phone call from Sally Ann someone had called in from New Buildings which is about 3 miles the other side of Crediton, to say that a dog answering to Megs description had been hanging about the area for 2 evenings.I got home changed and got some tasty food together with collar, lead, halty and Tish my trail hound. We walked around the area shaking the food containers whistling and calling her name but found nothing. We didn't know where the caller lived as she hadn't given an address, and her phone was switched off. So we drove on to Morchard Bishop and put up some posters there. On the way back I met a dog walker in the lanes and stopped and chatted (someone else to spread the word she looked at Tish to see what a trail hound looked like).Sally Ann called again to say that someone had spotted Meg on Monday on the Tiverton to Exeter road between Rewe and Stoke Canon in the middle of the afternoon. Too late to go looking on a busy main road tonight have to return tomorrow. Sally had another call from a lady in Silverton who had seen Meg last Thurs the day after she went missing at about 11.30am also near Stoke Canon she stopped the traffic and some people got out of their cars and tried to catch her but she was really scared and ran off. So any body out there who like me lives close can we get our there and speak to dog walkers in Stoke Woods, and people in the villages that I've mentioned it looks like she is staying in this area. Don't forget she is very scared. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I was so hoping there might have been another sighting yesterday as obviously until she's seen again, nobody knows just where to start calling for her. I hope you don't mind, but I phoned the RSPCA Exeter yesterday just in case she's handed in by somebody although if she's shy, I think that's probably doubtful. I think it might be worth keeping checking the Rescue Centres as it sounds as though she could well be taken for a Dobe X and these people might well not know what they have in their kennels?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have contacted the local Petsearch people today. All very much in that area and towards Exeter. They will also contact all their doggy people and friends. Have spoken to some Bloodhound people near Crediton who will keep their ears and eyes open for Meg and spread the word. Really hoping there is a sighting soon. Please dear Meg keep safe.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Nik for doing the other stations. We badly need to have a sighting to know that she is ok and publicity is the only way we can do it. I have phoned a load of farmers again today in the area and also pubs and B&B places, I bet they are fed up with hearing me. Please keep safe Meg until we find you. Just to add something about the sighting last Thursday. That was the morning after she had slipped her lead. The map ref I gave was only a few hundred yards from where she was originally lost so at that point she had not gone far. Whether she has now started to move or is lying up is anyones guess until we get another sighting. Just to reiterate that although she is a hound type she can be mistaken for a doberman cross type. She is black and tan and with her tail tucked under she looks very different to a typical trailhound. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

When you say 'you've put it on the radio', have you spoken to the newsroom, phone-in line, presenters, producers or Community Action in the case of the BBC ?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Nik, I had a list of numbers to phone this morning and rang Radio Devon by mistake as I know you had offered to phone. Being as I had them on the phone I put out a description of Meg. I have also put it on Radio Gemini and put it in the Express and Echo and also the Crediton Gazette. I hope this brings some news today. Thanks to everyone for your help. Good to have a last sighting fix ....so she's (perhaps) going East of Crediton (M5 isn't good news). Has anybody notified RSPCA Exeter? I can do that if you like. Anybody know of any Hunt Kennels around that side? There is one, marked on the map, just north of Wembworthy which I thought was the case. Might it be worth notifying them too? I thought she looked more like a Dobe than your basic Trailhound! And for sure, most rescue kennels would probably describe her as that. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We live just 1 field from where Meg went missing. Met Sue from the Trailhound trust putting up posters yesterda, we have a trailhound Tish which we rehomed from the Dogs Trust jAN this year. I,ve been talking to local people about Meg and will get some more posters up today in neighbouring villages, farm shops etc, also in Creditons favorite dog walking areas. It would be rally good if we could get a bit of a write up in the local papers as well as the normal lost add. SueLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thats great Nik. If you could stress that she has lived in the fells in Cumbria and is no threat to stock at all so that the farmers know. She has lived with sheep all around and trailhounds are taught at an early age not to chase. If you could also put my telephone number out 01995 643351 and I can then alert people in the area if there is a sighting. She is a small bitch black and tan who someone has already mistaken for a small doberman and she will be very nervous. Her ear numbers are 178 in one ear and HT3 in the other. Thanks for that and I will concentrate on phoning the newspapers in the morning. Could you please let me know when it will be on the radio.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks BassetsRUS and Nik. Sue has been out for two days looking in the area and she had her hound with her. Posters have been put up and a lot of people have been told about this dog. She was seen still round the area on Thursday morning but not been seen since. Some people did see her on the Thursday and thought she was a small doberman. She does look very different from the normal trailhound. I intend to phone Radio Devon and contact local papers in the morning. We really need a sighting now to know if she has gone on or still around this area. Please contact me at anytime on 01995 643351 and Sue on 07773 252350 Eileen (Trailhound Trust)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've been out today and delivered posters at my vet in Winkleigh, and their office in Lapford also. Drove back up the A377 as well as X-country between Winkleigh and the A377. Sadly no sign. I did notice a boarding kennel on the A377 and had been thinking about whether she might zero in on another Hunt Kennel (I think there is one in the Wembworthy area) if she heard them baying, but as I'm comparatively new to this area, I'm not up with large kennels. She shouldn't be alarmed by loud noises (apart from overhead military jets) around here though - wide open country with wooded valleys. I hope she can find something to keep her going, food-wise as it's getting colder overnight now - and it's still raining. This one is getting to me ....... I hope at least there's another sighting, but indeed, she could be anywhere if she's running. I've seen them covering the Fells and they can surely move.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sue is in the area with a trailhound that Meg travelled down with. We dont know at this stage if Meg has moved on as they can cover 10miles in 30 mins. Thanks for having a look in the area. The problem also is that there isn't a lot of daylight at this time of year. Meg will now be hungry and may hang around a farm or anywhere she could hear dogs such as hunt kennels. She has lived in kennels with a lot of other trailhounds and is very friendly with all breeds of dogs. She has lived in the fells in Cumbria and is not used to people and loud noises.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Worst possible scenario, unfamiliar with territory/owner/timid hound. Any chance of getting down there with another hound who she knows because it's going to be pretty hard to tempt her out of any cover she's found? I'm going in that direction this morning so will keep a look out. Praying for a happy outcome here.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I arranged the transport of Meg a Cumbrian Trailhound last Wednesday 15th November. She was being re-homed to a farmer in Crediton Devon. She slipped her collar when he was getting her out of the car and ran off. Apparently she was sighted around the area on Thursday morning but hasn't been seen since. She has no knowledge of the area at all and we desperately need a sighting and helpers to look for Meg. Someone is in the area looking at the moment and will be there tomorrow. If anyone needs any further info could they please ring me on 01995 643351 She doesn't even know the person who was rehoming her as she didn't even get into the house. Please help if you can.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Is it possible that Meg might have gone back to her old address - is that far away? I'm sure you will have checked, but if not, it might be worth while ..... dogs are not like cats though, so don't normally go back to their old address. I will be out towards Bideford/Barnstaple/Landkey/Swinbridge plus Gods Country West of South Moulton today, so will keep a look out. Hate to think of this girl out in all this wet weather.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Is the missing date correct as we were driving back from Great Torrington on Tuesday this week (14th) and noticed a dark coloured dog running loose on the side of the road between Torrington and Beaford. Unfortunately the road was narrow, and traffic heavy, so we couldn't stop. This dog looked more like a 'farm-type' collie actually, but .......? I shall put pu a posted in our village today. Hope Meg returns. Hint - hounds will return via the outgoing route (although with a new home this might not happen), so leave a piece of your clothing or something with your scene on it at the point she was last seen and with luck she might return to it. Check it regularly!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
