A DOG that went missing from its York home two weeks ago has been found safe and well - 200 miles away.

Tia, a Springer Spaniel, was spotted beside a road in Watford - but her owner does not have any idea how she got there.
Darren Yates was walking Tia near Millennium Bridge in Fulford on Bonfire Night when a firework spooked her and she ran away.

He said: “She just bolted with her tail between her legs, over the bridge towards the allotments.

"We spent a few hours that night looking for her and I took the next day off and every night for the next 12 nights to do the same.

“Me and a friend, Hayley Parker, started up the Facebook page which absolutely took off; it was unbelievable.

"It’s quite surprising how many people got involved a lot of people went out looking without me even asking, it shows good community spirit, I’m quite taken aback by it all.”

But two-year-old Tia was nowhere to be seen, until a motorist spotted her about 200 miles away, sitting by the side of a busy road in Watford.

Darren, 27, from South Bank, said: “They only found her because she was microchipped.
"They took her home and to the vet the next morning, scanned her chip and got in touch. I would recommend the chip to anyone. If it wasn’t for that, I don’t think we would have her.

“I have no idea how she managed to get so far away. I think someone picked her up and took her down there, and she’s escaped.

"It’s very unlikely she’s got into a lorry herself but someone has had her because she had a collar on which wasn’t the one I gave her.”

Darren, who is a joiner, said when he collected her from the vet on Monday, he was overwhelmed and Tia was very pleased to see him.

He said: “She was ecstatic, she went bonkers. I’m over the moon.

“She’s absolutely fine now, and I’m going to change our walking habits next bonfire night. She’s never been fazed by any sort of noise, it’s amazing.”

Darren announced on the Facebook page that Tia had been found safe and well, prompting an outpouring of good wishes.

The page had attracted more than 2,000 supporters in a fortnight.

Watford man describes moment he found Tia the missing dog - 200 miles away from her home in York

A dog that went missing for two weeks from its home in York was reunited with its owner thanks to the help of a Watford man.

Sean Maguire, 25, found Tia as he was driving along Pimlico Road towards Bedmond at 12.30am.

After seeing the car in front of him almost hit something and then realising it was a , a springer spaniel dog in the road, Mr Maguire pulled over and whistled to get the dog's attention. The dog was almost hit again by a car driving in the other direction.

Mr Maguire said: "It was raining and dark and the dog was very muddy, wet, had bleeding feet and was shaking badly. I picked up the dog and walked about with it but there was no one around.

"I knew I couldn't leave the dog, so I took it in my car back to my house. Me and my dad then went back out and drove around to see if anyone was out looking for it, but we had no luck."

The dog spent the night in Mr Maguire's room, and the following morning Mr Maguire's mum bathed the dog and gave him some food.

According to Mr Maguire Tia had no name tag on either of the two collars she was wearing, so they decided to take Tia to get scanned for a micro chip.

Mr Maguire said: "We took the dog to Park Veterinary Centre in Katherine Place, where the vet announced the dog was a girl called Tia from York - we thought he was a boy!

"We got the number of the Yorkshire owner and he was overwhelmed by the call. He said he'd leave straight after work from York to collect her from ours in Watford."

Mr Maguire added that he could tell Tia belonged to owner Darren Taylor because of her reaction when she saw him.

"Darren thanked us for taking Tia in. To be honest, I would have been happy keeping her if she didn't have a home, but I'm very happy Tia is safe and home now," added Mr Maguire.
