Anyone dumping or shooting a greyhound would be banned for life . With earmarks , micro chips and DNA testing it's easy to trace any greyhound . Similarly anyone employed in greyhound racing mistreating a greyhound in any way will be banned and should that occur it's people within the industry that report it more often than not .
Every track has at least one rehoming group and pups that don't want to race are often the easiest to rehome , lacking the prey drive of the racers means they are usually suitable to live with cats .
All too often greyhounds that have been found dumped in dreadful condition have been stolen and used for illegal hare coursing . It's the same problem for lurchers .
They steal the dog , try it out in a day or two , if it doesn't chase the hares they will dump it there and then . If it does chase it will be sold on or moved to a different part of the country and once they've finished with the dog at the end of the season or if it is injured they will dump it . That is why I always tell people with pet lurchers to get them micro chipped and be very careful especially in the Autumn when the incidence of thefts increase .

I have seen first hand at the state these dogs get in through racing and then either dumped or shot because they never made it or didn't want to race , so my opinion is fact x but hey there isn't much that can be done as yet because no law is broken , I bid you good day inka and hope that this boy gets to a loving home ,

There's no need to feel sorry for him , he will be fine . Too many people who have never been anywhere near a racing kennel or track are far too quick to spread lies about them . Sadly people believe them as they've never seen for themselves how well the dogs are treated .

This is so sad, was so pleased to see he had been reunited, but after knowing what the outcome really is, feel so sorry for him

Don't believe all the antis propaganda , he will want for nothing while he is in a racing kennel and will race for the love of it the same as any pet running after a ball . Once they are in the traps they are off the lead and can do what ever they want , if they don't want to race they won't .
You can't make a dog do what it doesn't want to , when you see them at the track they are dragging the handler out onto the track not the other way round and you'll see them leaping about with their tails wagging at prospect of racing .
Unlike boarding kennels greyhound kennels can be inspected by the stewards at any time of the day or night and require a vets certificate every year where both the kennels and dogs are inspected .
Every dog will be checked by a vet upon their arrival at the track and before and after they race . The vet will also walk the track before racing to check that it is safe for racing . Vets are not employed by the track but by the greyhound board to ensure that they cannot be pressured into saying things are ok when they are not .
I hope he finds a loving family when he retires but I'm also aware that they tales I hear of greyhounds being dumped , starved and abused and the dogs that I have seen in dreadful condition have come from dogs that were supposed to be pets in loving families . But I am still prepared to believe that the vast majority of people who want to give a home to a much loved ex-racer will treat it with the love and care it deserves and is used to receiving .

I am right behind you on that remark Happiness yorkie lover, IF he ever makes it TO a loving home.

So has this poor fella been brought here to race and have a life of misery before he and if he makes it to be in a loving family ?
Inka
Actually he had arrived from Ireland only the day before he got loose . He will be chipped when he is registered for racing as are all racing dogs .
He got loose by scaling a 6 foot fence and taking off . He had been put out in that paddock before several times since his arrival without any sign of trying to escape . What possessed him to do it we will never know as apart from his race form his background is unknown but it very unusual for a greyhound to even think about jumping a fence .
When he has finished racing the rehoming group attached to his track will make sure he goes to someone who can cope with his Houdini tendencies .

Sorry but Blackey needs a proper greyhound collar and a chip, looks a lively lad !! Sighthounds slip collar so easily, should have been created with smaller necks or larger heads. Last edited: 2014-12-28 23:28:06 by Me N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer

That is great news Inka, thank you everyone who helped get this boy to safety, I will switch him over to reunited x

Thankfully it was Blacky and he is now reunited with his owner and back in his kennel tucking in to a big bowl of food . Many thanks to all those who kept an eye out for him and thank you to Debbi-Jayne for everything you did .
Blacky is in surprisingly good condition for a dog that's been living rough and apart from loosing about 2kg in weight he is well and un-injured . Their skin tears easily so we feared the worst for him .
So thank you to everyone and a nice happy ending to round off the year

Someone knocked on my door around midday today to ask if I knew of someone who had lost a greyhound or if I knew of a rescue he could take him to. I told him to contact the dog warden as I couldnt keep here as got 6 of my own. Since then I have taken some food, a coat and blanket and left it at his home to see if he can keep him temporarily as I saw this post on facebook. He was out and the number Ive been given for him Im not sure is current but as this is near LIttle Ouse and so close to where this dog was found eating this mans chickens as he was so hungry it could be the one. I will go there tomorrow and see if hes in and if he still has him.Last edited: 2014-12-27 19:36:45 by Debbi-Jayne

So far no sightings of him yet .
Local farmers and gamekeepers have been informed as have the RSPB sanctuary at Lakenheath . The river Ouse is a barrier to the dog going North , the nearest crossing points for him are at the Lakenheath to Hockwold road or at Redmere . Farmers at Redmere have been asked to look out for him .
Unfortunately with him not having had time to settle and get to know people here he could have travelled miles by now .

I saw a young couple with a black greyhound with white on it's chest in Mildenhall today another couple came up and the guy picked the dog up and carried it off.
I wish I had said something to them, like why are you carrying the dog. Has the lost dog got white markings on chest as only a similar photo on here?

I have spoken to the lady who registered this dog on behalf of the owner, there has been no sightings at all since the day the dog went missing, he is very timid so possibly still roaming, please if you are in the area keep a look out for him x
