- I have been following this on facebook.. could you put the link up please re Homer was well known for roaming?
It still makes no difference, maybe even worse because his finder lived in his street?
It also is irrelevant if Homer was microchipped or not. The law states when a stray, lost, stolen dog is found the Dog Warden is to be informed. Both the rspca and the vets did not contact the DW or local kennels who were both aware Homer was missing.
Excuses are being made, this poor dog has wrongly been PTS. Absolutely disgusted. I hope Homer's family takes legal action. I know i would.
Run free Homer, have fun at Rainbow bridge. My thoughts are with your family xLast edited: 2015-03-25 14:06:58 by BBKM - 2015-03-24 16:28 moppetswood
- Sunshine 64 I have lots of sympathy for the dog, what a horrid way to end his life which could have been prevented by the dog having ID and a microchip. Microchipping is readily available in Durham FOC. It has also been reported on Facebook by 2 people that the dog was well known for roaming in the area, this was not people complaining but saying how they will miss seeing him. RIP Homer.

- Statement from vets
Statement from Cestria Veterinary Centre Ltd regarding the treatment of the stray dog on Saturday 21st March :-
All the practice staff take their responsibilities to animals brought to us very seriously, irrespective of their ownership status. Our obligation to stray animals is to provide such emergency treatment or pain relief as is appropriate and we treat many stray animals each year before either reuniting them with their owners or passing them on the relevant authorities.
Homer, if it is Homer as he has yet to be positively identified, was brought in on Saturday by a member of the public. We checked our 'lost' register, in which we record the details of missing animals reported to the surgery but failed to find a match. He was not wearing a collar and was unsuccessfully scanned for a microchip. We did not contact the Dog Warden as we had previously been informed that they did not work weekends, and the Police no longer have responsibility for stray dogs and do not maintain a list.
He was comforted by one of our nurses and examined by two experienced veterinary surgeons, who found him very agitated and distressed. Obviously elderly, he was making clawing, repetitive movements of his front legs but was unable to stand even when supported and was barely responsive to his surroundings. His lung and heart sounds were muffled and indistinct, he was very thin and was experiencing breathing difficulties. They decided that his condition was terminal and his prognosis hopeless. No palliative treatment could have been provided which would have rendered him comfortable and accordingly he was painlessly put to sleep.
The same action would have been recommended had he been presented by his owners.
It is not acceptable either legally or ethically to admit a stray animal in such a desperate clinical condition to the hospital in the hope that the owner comes forward. It is always with deep regret that we take this drastic action, which is only done to prevent further suffering, but these few unfortunate animals are put down with a gentle touch and a kind word.
His owners have our deepest sympathy.

- Moppetswood these people have lost their dog it was put to sleep without their knowledge. So it wasn't micro chipped from what I have been reading on the internet a lot of vets and re-homing places are not even checking the chip details to contact owners. I don't know how you can say they are not blameless.Just show some sympathy.
- 2015-03-22 14:14 Unknown
- I read on facebook that it was homers normal vets that did this. This is unforgivable, didn't they recognise him? And why did they not call the dig warden who was aware Homer was missing.
- 2015-03-22 13:00 Holly
- So tragic, the owner found out about this soon after it happened, if I am reading it right, so why were they not consulted beforehand? So sad, rip poor Homer

- Another victim to the RSPCA/vets decision
- 2015-03-22 03:21 moppetswood
- Heartbreaking news The dog should / would have only been put to sleep if it was in the dog's best interests. The owner cannot be held completely blameless, why no collar and tag or microchip? The RSPCA shouldn't have been involved as this dog was a stray.
- 2015-03-22 00:35 digbysmum
- Am in tears here. Were the RSPCA involved? If so, it doesn't surprise me in the least. Cannot believe that a vet would do such a thing,. This is just heartbreaking. I am so very sorry and my thoughts are with the family at this most devastating time. This needs to be taken further. Run free at the bridge, beautiful Homer, where my two black labs will be waiting to play xxxx

- 2015-03-21 22:34 BorderCol
- This is terrible. It all seems to have happened on the same day he was lost. Is this even legal without the owners permission when there were no pressing humane reasons? I thought he would have a right to 7 days at least. And surely a vet could see he was recovering from recent surgery?
- 2015-03-21 21:51 Ellie
- More heart breaking news. I am so sorry, thoughts with Homers devoted family. Run free at the Bridge sweetheart
