Oh dear, JulieH! Once you are hooked on DogLost you will never escape!!
JulieH
It was Sandy who got me hooked on Doglost ,coming in from work the first thing I did was check to see if there was news on Sandy, Happy life fella x
Viv B
What a wonderful ending, many thanks to all who did so much for Sandy.
3labs
Far away but followed your story from beginning to end, what a fabulous and happy ending!! Well done to you all and a very happy future to lovely Sandy!! Xx
Linsie
Well the time has come to post a final update.

Today we went to see our boy Sandy (he will always be Sandy to us).
His coat is looking so much better and the mange has practically gone (although he has one treatment remaining).
We met his new Mummy and she is lovely, she is in as much love with him as he is with her. She has 2 other dogs at home (both rescues) that will give Sandy some company. He will be leaving the kennels soon to go join them on her sofa and to enjoy all the attention.
He was a bit overwhelmed when we first saw him (but then again with 4 women standing there staring and talking about you , then you would be as well 😉). He soon got used to us and had a fuss and even whined when we left his kennel to go get a coffee with his mum.

For those of you that haven't seen them as yet. Myself and Judith (Padster) have posted some pictures up on the Facebook page of our visit today.
We were also able to take up a boot load of items for them that included bedding, food and bric-à-brac that they can sell to make money.
The fundraising page has now been closed down and raised a whopping £260 (after the site fees were deducted) and that will be transferred to the rescues accounts as soon as the person with the bank details returns from vacation on Saturday.

The last thing left to say is a big thank you,
Firstly to Judith (Padster) who without her, we would not of known about Sandy and basically started this all off
Then to Carole (Bonbon) who joined in the fun with us to get Sandy safe.
And then to everyone that is reading this. Without you calling us (some VERY early hours of the morning) to report sightings, offer to help in some way, putting up posters, donating to the cause, we would probably still be chasing him round Bracknell, rather than sending him off happy and healthy to his new home.

Thanks once again to all.
Chilebat
Have just seen the pictures taken today, thank you for sharing. I hope he is very soon enjoying his new life in his new home. I know you have a new name now but, GOOD LUCK AND STAY SAFE SANDY you are a truly amazing dog xxxxx
Holly
Lovely Sandy can't wait to hear how he is now xx
Chilebat
Have a lovely time with him tomorrow, will be thinking of you all. Looking forward to seeing the pictures of him now! X
Linsie
Bonbon, Padster and I will be going to see Sandy tomorrow and take up the kind donations (items and money) to the rescue tomorrow. We will also be putting up pictures of Sandy on the Facebook group tomorrow night
Linsie
Thanks Skywalker99 you beat me to it!

We now have £225 raised for the rescue, which is brilliant!

When I told them about what a wonderful group of people you are donating to this place that they don’t know, and some of you who have not even met Sandy he was overwhelmed – and so are we!

We will post one final update, when Sandy leaves the rescue (in the next 2 weeks or so) and hope to have some pictures of him as well for you. (These will be put on the Facebook group)

We have also had people asking how else they could help the rescue that has Sandy if they can not donate money.

Well Carole (Bonbon), Judith (Padster) and I will be going to see him before he goes to his forever home and I am sure we will have some room in the car for other donations that they accept ( list below). If anyone has anything they would like to donate please let us know.

bedding (blankets, sheets, quilts etc)
food
towels
newspaper
bric-a-brac that they can sell on to raise funds.
*Please note they are unable to make use of feathered duvets or any type of pillow*

and here is the latest news from his facebook page **** SANDY UPDATE *****
I have just spoken to the rescue and Sandy is a completely different dog to when we last saw him.

He finishes his treatment this Wednesday, and his coat is looking a lot better and growing back.
He is very responsive to commands and is loving all the attention he is being given.

Now for the best news of all

SANDY HAS A NEW FOREVER HOME

She is a kennel hand at the rescue, she fell in love with him the day she saw him and requested to adopt him.
He will not leave her side and cries after her if he can’t see her. He does everything that she asks of him, and the rescue says that he could not have found a better person to look after him.
Chilebat
Have just read the latest news on his Facebook page, really pleased for him. X
Chilebat
Thank you for the update, good to hear he is doing really well and is happy. Fantastic that you are raising money for the charity, they all do so much but have so little, I have donated x
Linsie
Hi all, a little update on Sandy (we got this a couple of days ago but forgot to post on here -sorry)
Sandy is doing really well and responding to treatments, he is very happy and enjoying all the love he is being given.

We have set up a donations page to help cover the costs associated with Sandys road to recovery and rehoming (link below for anyone wanting it). So far we have a wonderful £155 in the pot that will go to the rescue when we go and pay him a visit in a few weeks when he is fully settled.

Congratulations you wonderful, wonderful people! It really warms my heart to know there are kind hearted people like you looking out for our animal friends. I am not sure who is caring for him now but please let me know if any food or other donations are needed x

Been away - what great news to come back to on this rainy Sunday. Well done!!
Chilebat
Good to read on his Facebook page that he is doing well and enjoying himself x
ClaireC
Give yourself a pat on the back as you surely deserve it xx
Padster
Exactly, JulieH! Some people have said to me, what's the point, why bother, and that's precisely what I said - I can't help every dog, but if I can change one dog's world for the better, I'm happy!
JulieH
This is the best news! I've been following Sandy's story from Yorkshire and unable to physically be there and help I can only say a massive well done to you all. This won't change the world, but it will change the world for Sandy!
Shelagh
What wonderful news. Have followed Sandy's story from the start rt. Had to do a double take ,when saw on reunited, just in case I was wrong. Well done team Sandy, you have worked so hard to get this boy. Hope Sandy will find a w wonderful home when his time comes for rehoming. Good luck sweet Sandy.
ClaireC
So relieved Sandy cooperated in the end! Like Team Sandy we are all so happy to see this handsome boy safe. Well done. Xx
Padster
Well, finally time to sit down and post something! What a day! I was walking my two dogs when I got the call to say that Sandy was hiding behind the shed in someone's garden. I was at least a 20 minute walk from my car so called Linsie who jumped straight in her car and got over there in 10 minutes with Carole (BonBon) not far behind. I ran back to my car, dragging my poor hounds along, and drove over to find Linsie and Carole with Sandy sitting in the garden on a lead, quite calmly. I will happily admit to shedding a tear or two!
I may have started this adventure when I first saw him running down Harvest Ride and into the building site, but I couldn't have got this far without the fabulous Linsie and Carole, who went above and beyond the call of duty for a dog they hadn't even seen until several weeks after they got involved.
We've had so much help from so many people, most of whom were just a voice on the end of a phone, having seen one of our posters, or our Facebook posts. It's lovely to know there are so many good people out there who want to help a stray dog.
Sandy is now off on his way to a lovely rescue for rest and rehab and then hopefully he'll find a lovely forever home, which is what he deserves after all this time living rough. Judging by the way he was cuddled up on a blanket in Linsie's garden this afternoon, he'll be taking up too much room on someone's sofa in no time!
We will all miss this lovely dog, who has turned out to be a real soft and gentle boy.

Great news, safe at last :)
fionap58
From that first tentative 'what should I do' post to a fully fledged dog catcher! Well done Judith and co, you worked so hard and did all the right things and even though the feeding station didn't catch him directly it kept him safe, fed and in the same area so he could be caught. Don't underestimate how much that helped. So pleased you got the happy ending you all deserve xx
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
So pleased for you all you worked so hard. I can't pick up on the link but would like to follow Sandys progress, hopefully the FB site has a name that I can use. Whatever will you all do now.
DogLostOwl
Congratulations to everyone who helped to bring this boy to safety.
Badger
Well done to everyone who has helped in any way at all to get 'Sandy' to safety. Best wishes for your rehabilitation Sandy and happiness in your new forever home when the time is right - big hugs for you XX

Brilliant news - well done everyone xx
Kit'sMum
Well done everyone for your tenacity, and I think Sandy really wanted to be rescued in the end. Please keep us updated on him and I hope he finds a loving forever home soon
BonBon
After a very exciting morning I have just spent a couple of hours with Linsie and the wonderful Sandy. He is adorable and, considering how long we know he has been out, is in very good condition. I think he was just waiting for Padster (Judith) to get back from her holiday before being willing to give himself up. Just sorry that I have to go out tonight instead of spending more time with 'our boy'.

Special thanks must go to the family who made that all important call this morning and to the people who have allowed us free access to their private land over the last couple of months. Without this help the ending could have been very different.
Good luck Sandy. You will be missed by the three of us but we know you have a good life ahead of you.
Holly
So pleased to hear he is now safe, well done to all concerned. Have a happy life now Sandy
Chilebat
Fantastic news, well done to the three of you! From his pictures today he looks like he had had enough not like in the pictures before. I hope all went well for him at the vets and wish him lots of luck as he goes onto his next adventure to get ready for a safe forever home. Lots of love Sandy xx
Linsie
Well now everything has calmed down we can tell you what happened.

Judith got a call from the son of a lady who's house was on popeswood road. They saw him go into their garden and managed to close the gate behind him trapping him in the garden. I went over and tried to catch him on the second attempt he let me just put the lead round his head and came willingly.
The way he has acted from being caught to going in the car to going to the vets indicates that he was somebody's pet unfortunately he's not chipped. He is currently enjoying lots of cuddles while we wait for all friend to turn up you will be taking him to his rescue. We will not be posting further details about where he's going. But please know he is in very safe hands and we trust this person. He will rehabilitate Sunday and then be able to find Emma home once he is back to full health.
Holly
Brilliant news!!
Linsie
WE HAVE SANDY. he is being checked by the vets now. More information to follow later.
BonBon
me n my girl - not sure his ears flick out - just the lighter colouring in his fur showing in the photo. It's not just his legs, he is big and strong all over!
BonBon
I echo Linsie's comment time-wise. For all 3 of us, our fuel & food bills will also reduce once we have our boy to safety. It's just a case of gently, gently & slowly, slowly until we reach our goal, no matter how long it takes. He's worth it.
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
Is it me or do his ears flick out at the end. He also has big strong looking legs, no wonder he's giving you all the run around. Thank God for determined people like you and thank you all for what you are doing.
Linsie
I am going to be lost myself once we catch him. Won't know what to do with the spare time I am going to have.
Padster
Thanks Claire - good to know that even after 2 years of straying your boy was happy to be domesticated again. We are keeping the helpers to a minimum. There is a core of three of us who go up to the site regularly. No one else knows where it is and we've asked people just to report sightings, not try to catch him. We have Ray on board and he is offering his help and advice.
ClaireC
My old Lurcher that eventually decided I might become his loving forever owner had beenstraying for 2 years prior to moving "in". Took me a few months of just leaving food out regularly and an old box to curl up in! Good luck and really hope he cooperates. Also hope that with too many people trying to help doesn't do the opposite to what you are trying to achieve. Ray has unli mited knowledge and expertise in advising you. X

Seen last night around 1am in priestwood area, Moordale Ave, Farm close. ran out in front of my car... But don't worry I didn't hit him. I stopped got out my car tried to call him but he ran off down the road towards Kingsmere road.Last edited: 2015-07-05 10:44:10 by Sarah Barrett
Paws Around Berkshire
Just a reminder - If there is a safe place Sandy goes to that you can set up a humane trap then I know the Wokingham Animal Warden is willing to help by lending her trap.
Linsie
We check the site 3-4 times a day and put food and water down for him. Just need to keep him away from cars and roads now.
NickyB
its amazing that dogs can survive as strays for any length of time, finding food is relatively easy, but finding water, and avoiding traffic.hope sandy is caught very soon and someone is missing him
Linsie
BonBon and I had a surprise close encounter with Sandy this afternoon - very close (within a few inches!) he looked well, no injuries, so had a lucky escape with the cars this morning.
Linsie
Well we saw our boy again tonight and in the area we need him to be in so all positive. He looked well albeit a little skinnier than before but that is to be expected.
BonBon
A brief update for the followers of Sandy not on Facebook. He is still not co-operating and appears to be laying low during this hot spell but we are still on his case. Sorry there is nothing more to report at the moment.
Linsie
Sorry for the lack of updates on here lately, but well Sandy is not currently being very cooperative with us, so there hasn't been much to report.
Padster, Bonbon and I are still on his case, and Padster had a useful conversation with Ray earlier today to give us some more information/ideas that we could try.

If anyone wants to have more frequent updates (when we have them) then we post them on the Facebook group we have created for Sandy at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1662852973951388/
Chilebat
Thinking of you Sandy out in this weather, stay safe x
Padster
Nothing to report yet, Fiona, other than continued sightings. Hopefully positive news soon.
fionap58
What news?
Chilebat
Pleased to read that he has been seen today as I was getting worried about him. Stay safe x
fionap58
That sounds like it might be really promising. Perhaps you could take her with you when you do your rounds. It seems like Sandy would be happy to make contact with another dog. I expect he is quite lonely.Last edited: 2015-06-15 11:28:10 by fionap58
Padster
I really don't know, Fiona. The only info we have involving another dog was when Sandy ran towards a lady walking her dog along the pavement. Her dog barked at Sandy and he bolted. So we wouldn't want a barky dog (which rules out one of mine!) My female Lab is a very laid back, calm dog and most other dogs, especially males, love her! So we could possibly use her. Will have a think about it.
fionap58
Amazing progress, and I'd be nervous too and scared I'd get it wrong. I've seen all the info on catching a dog on here but never had a chance to try it out with my dog as I never saw him myself but I did catch a dog in a field a few weeks ago after advising his owner NOT to chase him round shouting. I collared someone passing with a dog, as he approached me when I was walking mine earlier, and let him come and sniff then gently got hold of his collar. Do you think Sandy might react well to another dog?
Padster
Hi Fiona - we haven't done that yet. We are letting him get used to us being there. That is definitely a strategy I plan to try, if I can keep calm enough next time I see him!! He came back several times after that video was taken and I saw him twice in the short time I was there on the way back from work. No sign of him there yesterday, though - the three of us were there most of the day. He was seen in other areas! No sign of him this morning either. Hopefully he'll be back after a few days exploring his other areas!
fionap58
Just watched the video, he really looked like he wanted to come over. Did Linsie or Carole try the 'sit down and turn your back, hold some food out and be quiet' method? Worth a try if you get this lucky again
fionap58
He's beautiful and what amazing luck to get so close. I'm sure it won't be long before you gain his confidence as he looks quite relaxed.
allimac
He hesitated for quite a while before trotting off - hopefully that is a good sign. x
Chilebat
He's looking in lovely condition! Continue to stay safe Sandy xx
BonBon
Can't believe how lucky we were today and confirmed everything we had been thinking and found out. Considering how long he has been out on his own, he looks to have been taking great care of himself. Let's hope this continues until he is willing to give himself up.
Padster
Two new photos added, please hit refresh (F5) if you can't see them.
Linsie
New pictures coming shortly, need to go through the 50 that i took to find some decent ones.
Padster
Very exciting day today! Linsie and BonBon were scoping out the feeding station area and Sandy actually walked right past them!!!! They got a fantastic video of him which is on our Facebook group. We now know Sandy is DEFINITELY a boy! I'm gutted I wasn't there to see him but so excited about the video and how calm and well he looks.
Here's the link to our group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1662852973951388/

Unfortunately, I think this video rules out any chance this is Reiver (36096). Sandy has white paws and a white tail tip.Last edited: 2015-06-12 14:18:04 by Padster

Little monkey! If only he'd stay somewhere safe like this and keep away from the roads.
Linsie
Spotted at 21:45 tonight having fun at the golf course. He was having a great time running in to the long grass and on to the fairway. As the light was fading we left him to his fun,
fionap58
It was our dog warden that said to check it 3 times during the night but hadn't thought of what would happen if Merlin went there and something was caught. Of course the trap doesn't have to be set all night if people can't be there all night. Last man standing can close trap and leave food outside
Linsie
We had a very close encounter with Sandy tonight, still can't believe how close he came to us, but he was as usual on a mission and dashed right in front of us and into a field and disappeared!
Linsie
We have now a dedicated Facebook page for Sandy. Updates will be posted there as well as here.
It was created as we currently have around 40+ groups that have had information on about Sandy,so to put it into one group will make our job updating you a little easier.

Message for Beezle: I've left a message for you at the office to give me a call. If you get this first, please could you call me on 07740 203421. Thanks very much.
AlisonH
Hi Padster, yes that does sound about right. Trapping cannot be rushed and you are right to take it slowly and carefully. We were advised by a guy who regularly goes out to help trap long term strays and he advised us to lay a scent trail leading to the trap. I have sent you an email with the instructions attached. Please check your spam folder.
Sorry but I am not aware of a camera but I will ask around for you.
Padster
Thanks Alison, that's useful information. My idea is to start off just putting a bit of food and water out so he gets used to the idea that he can go there for food. Once we are fairly sure he's taking the food, then put the trap in but not set, with the food at the entrance but not inside. Then gradually move the food inside. I would only set the trap when it can be monitored. As he seems to go to our chosen site around early afternoon, monitoring it shouldn't be too much trouble.

Does that sound about right? I already have the numbers of the both the office and out of office numbers for the local council dog pound (we don't have a dog warden here) so will call them as soon as we (hopefully) have him. We also have the a local Lurcher Rescue so will alert them once he's caught in case we can't trace an owner.

Hopefully we are all prepared! I had heard that DogLost have a camera that can be loaned out, is that true? It would be quite helpful for us to have a camera so we can be sure he is taking the food.

Thanks surfingsarah, yes, I heard he had been seen there. Unfortunately no one will help until you actually have the dog secure which is why I got involved. Please would you let me know each time you see him? It's useful to keep a log of his movements. My number is the first one above.
surfingsarah
I have seen this poor guy in Arlington Square today (I work in an office there). I didn't know you guys were trying to trap him so called RSPCA, Council, Police and local dog charity but nobody could help. Anyway, I can see you are all working really hard to try and trap him so if I can do anything to help please let me know - accordingto my colleagues he is seen in the grounds of the business park alot, especially in the mornings. My number is 07713 988 622Last edited: 2015-06-09 15:29:45 by surfingsarah
AlisonH
The reason you need to watch a trap 24/7 is that if you do catch another animal in the trap it needs to be released instantly because if Sandy happens to be nearby and sees an animal in there he will not go anywhere near the trap again. Also fresh food should be put down each day and not too much of it as he needs to be hungry enough to want to return for more the next day. The food should something like fresh chicken or pilchards and be put there at the same time each day so that a regular feeding pattern is established. Fresh water should also be supplied every day.
Padster
All, we now have a pretty solid plan and a very good area to set up our food station and trap. We are going to keep this between a few people for now so we can keep it under control. If anyone local on here wants to be included in the rota for monitoring this, please give me a call on 07740 203421.

Thanks to everyone for your advice and support. We hope we are close to finally getting somewhere. I'm not going to jinx it by getting too confident, but at least we have a plan! We will keep you informed!
fionap58
The trap also has to be somewhere nearby helpers who can check it regularly. It was suggested when I used one that it should be manned 24 hours a day in case wildlife gets trapped but personally I think that's a bit excessive. I checked mine at 10pm, 2am, 6am etc. If there's 3 or 4 of you that would make it easier! I did let a worried fox out one evening but he was fine. Also if you DO trap him, take the trap and dog somewhere safe before you get him out as he will probably try and bolt. Early days yet I know but would hate for you to get him then lose him again.
BonBon
Vicki - thanks for your continued support and offer of help. I'm certain another pair of hands or more will be of use as/when our plan comes into operation. I can always phone you.

Chilebat - thanks for continuing to look out for Sandy. Sightings are still very important.
Chilebat
Good to hear there is a plan, will continue to look out for Sandy.
VickiP
Great Linsie - do let me know if you ever need another pair of hands. At the moment I'm just walking dogs and driving daily around Garth Meadows, Larks Hill area to keep an eye out, and drove up to Syngenta at lunch to nose around, but nothing. The Allotment area was quite busy so will print out posters tomorrow when in office to hand out up there.
Linsie
Hi VickiP, we have discussed the use of a trap, but its not as easy as that. We have to have it in a place that is secure for both Sandy and the public. Putting it near the school is not the best option. We have a possibility of another location we are looking at that has a better chance to ensure everyone's safety and that is currently being discussed by Padster, Bonbon and myself.
The lovely Beezle has offered the use of a trap when we need it, and once we have everything sorted we wil be taking her up on that offer.

VickiP
With another sighting nr Sandy Lane school this morning at drop-off time, this seems to be the most 'popular' location early morning for him. Does anyone have a trap/cage they could lend to be set up with food from dawn? There is dense hedgerow on Garth Meadows bordering the north of the school boundary... would be worth a try?
Chilebat
Worrying that Sandy now keeps being seen in the road, thought possibly Sandy would make an appearance for me when we were out looking on my birthday this weekend but nothing! Stay safe Sandy
fionap58
What a nightmare! I wish I was closer and I'd be parked up with my night vision goggles and warm sausages. That poor dog, I do hope it ends well but he seems determined not to be caught. I'd warn people not to try and grab him because he'll be quite wild by now.
Padster
No reported sightings yesterday but four today. All in the same area: 8.15am on Binfield Road, came out of the entrance to flats near Jocks Lane, ran towards roundabout with Harvest Ride. Later that morning seen on Moordale Avenue, ran into Longmoors. Then seen on Temple Way running towards roundabout with London Road. Around 1pm I got a call from a lady parked up on Popeswood road. She and husband saw Sandy dodging traffic and running in an out of Popeswood Lodge. I raced up there and met up with them but thorough search was fruitless. Far too many areas he could run off to from there. But, the people who live at Popeswood Lodge say he's been seen there a few times in the last few days. I've asked them to report anymore sightings.
Padster
Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking, Chilebat. Only issue I can see is that they are quite security conscious up at Syngenta so don't know if they would allow us unlimited access. Although you can walk through the site from Maidenhead Road to Weller's Lane and the area I believe he's been seen is on the left between the big field and the buildings, so they may allow us to go there. We can but ask!

So, what is his route from Syngenta to the rest of his area? No real surprise there's no sightings in between, as he could be running through fields or down the quiet country lanes.
Chilebat
Very interesting, will widen the area that I have been looking. The other evening whilst stopped and looking we did see lots of deer in a field near to where it all began, the development. Do you think the lunchtime sightings are due to uneaten food being put in the bins and Sandy knows this and times, if a regular there and if allowed could be a good base for a food station. I think that was what you were thinking Padster too from your last post.
Padster
Some interesting news came in today. Apparently our boy has been regularly seen up at the Syngenta, Jealotts Hill site. The lady who called me is an employee and called on behalf of a colleague who is the one who has seen him. This is a good 3km further than any other sighting we've had. If you now look at the google map, we have a very clear triangle with Syngenta the top point, this mornings sighting on Broad Lane the bottom right and London Road/Beehive Lane sighting the bottom left. Most of the sightings are in the lower third of the triangle.
I double checked that Syngenta have no small livestock, only cows so hopefully there's nothing there he could consider food. I'm not sure if this is good or bad news! It massively increases our search area, but he has been seen there regularly and in one particular spot around lunchtimes, so it could be useful. But there are an awful lot of fields between there and the majority of his sightings!

Linsie, BobBon and I are in constant contact, yes. We are meeting up tomorrow morning to discuss strategy and make a plan. The problem is we are always reacting to sightings so are at least 20 mins behind him - and he moves very quickly! I think we are getting somewhere ... slowly! We now have quite an army of people out there keeping a look out and reporting sightings, so hopefully it's just a matter of time before we get a lucky break. Once we have our plan we will probably need some help, so keep an eye on here to see if you can help us out.
fionap58
It's so hard to give up once you've started though, especially when you're having so many sighting. Are you all in contact and could you co-ordinate your searches so you're not all driving all over the place? Or is that what you're doing already? Have you made contact with anyone who would allow you to set up a feeding station in their garden yet as he seems to be frequenting the same rough area all the time?
Linsie
Miles is right over the last 4 days I have so far clocked up 54 miles just looking for him
BonBon
Between us, we have travelled miles looking for Sandy. He is totally feral now having been out on his own for so long. The posters etc. are definitely working and helping us plot his movements. Hopefully, we will eventually be able to get ahead of him or at least find out where his den - probably more than one - is located. We can only hope he remains safe until then.
Padster
I know, it's amazing how many sightings we are getting. Another sighting has just come in, today 3.45pm ish running up Holly Spring Lane back in direction of Sandy Lane.

If only he understood we just want to help him. I'm so worried it's only a matter of time before he gets hurt.
fionap58
How frustrating! Seems the whole world and his wife are spotting Sandy, just the people who are looking for him that haven't! It's strange that he hasn't learnt yet when to come out if he's nervous of people, usually they stick to dawn and dusk. Lots of lovely people trying to help him now so it's just a matter of time. Just stay safe Sandy til someone tempts you in........with bags of warm sausages :-)
Padster
Thanks, Vicki! I bet you were popular!!!
Padster
Have updated "date found" as PCSO has confirmed first report of him was 30th March!!!
VickiP
Just back from 2 figure-of-eight loops around garth meadows with a bag of warm sausages, no sighting I'm afraid.
Linsie
Just come back from another drive round (this dog is costing me a fortune in petrol). Have now dropped off posters in the Post Office Sorting Center, building site near Homebase and the burger van at the Lake on Western Road.

Had a drive round the known routes but didn't see him.
Spoke to a dog walker company who was at Larks Hill, who took some posters to share round.
Padster
Three phone calls this morning around 9am from Mums dropping their children at Sandy Lane Primary School. Sandy ran past towards Warfield Road. The last caller said he looked nervous but was not threatening at all. Just a bit worried by all the people around. Linsie and I separately drove around the area shortly afterwards, covering Sandy Lane, Warfield Road, Priory Lane, Harvest Ride, Quelm Park, Jocks Lane, Temple Park and down to the A329(M). Neither of us saw him.Last edited: 2015-06-04 11:54:41 by Padster

Great work today, Linsie, thank you! Quite excited about the kebab van sightings, let's hope we get more from there so we can establish a pattern. Come on Sandy, time to hand yourself in.
Linsie
Well no so many sightings today, so went for what turned out to be a 2 hour drive round all his known routes. We got a good tip off that he has been visiting Murats Kebab van on Eastern Road (near the Royal Oak pub/Honda garage) so have dropped off a poster to them, also to Sammys who parks behind Homebase.

Shell Garage on Binfield Road, and the Londis off License now also displaying the poster.

Spoke to some lovely people tonight and gave them posters.
Have posted on 30+ of the selling sites on Facebook and have passed the details onto the local paper for them to run a story on him (they have done this for us before on previous lost dogs).

More sightings being reported via the facebook selling sites but all for yesterday.

The search continues!Last edited: 2015-06-03 22:43:09 by Linsie

Lots of sightings today. Three in Temple Park around the same time this morning (about 11.45am) and another one of him running down the middle of a road, this time, London Road towards the Coppid Beech traffic lights at around 3pm (not far from Temple Park). A lady and her daughter, who were driving from Wokingham direction to go to Ryslip Kennels, saw him and got out to try and catch him. They called Ryslip to let them know (as I think they had booked the field there so were letting them know they may be late). Ryslip called me and as I was out driving at the time, I headed out there. Unfortunately, the info Ryslip gave me wasn't quite accurate so I was looking down Murrell Hill Lane, when in fact Sandy had been cornered in a garden in Beehive Lane, on the other side of London Road. Sadly, Sandy escaped. I went to Ryslip to meet the lady who had tried to catch him.

She was able to give me some more info on Sandy. She said she's fairly sure Sandy is a male, is a lovely looking dog, quite young, she said maybe only 2 years old. He has the look of a Saluki about him. She said the only photo we have doesn't do him justice! I've amended the info in the descriptions above.

He certainly is a Houdini!!Last edited: 2015-06-03 10:31:41 by Padster
Linsie
Just got back from having a look round after getting a text from Padster about a sighting within the hour. Unfortunately no sign of Houdini (this is now what I am personally calling Sandy ;) Did speak to some guys who were cutting back all the bushes down the road from the Harvest Ride building site, and told them where Moor Cottage vets were in case they catch him.

Have to go to Wokingham a bit later so will have another look round the known routes again.
Padster
Thanks to BonBon and Linsie for getting out today after the sighting. I wasn't able to go out at the time.
This was a friend of mine who spotted him, worryingly running down the middle of Binfield Road. She said she had no idea how he didn't get run over. Come on Sandy, at least stay safe.
BonBon
I was out and about when a message came through at 14.30 saying Sandy had been sighted going from Binfield Road into Shepherds Lane, which is a large residential area. Immediately headed in that direction but, as per the norm, he had vanished. Drove around all the various roads and then to Holly Spring Lane area again - a route he has taken previously, but saw nothing. Took opportunity of placing more posters in the Larks Hill and Garth Meadow areas and also handed out leaflets to dog walkers. Came home via Tesco who agreed to place an A4 poster in their entrance window.
Chilebat
Have now taken a look at the the map and seen where the sighting was, at Homebase which is not far from the tip.Last edited: 2015-06-01 15:19:24 by Chilebat
Chilebat
Where was the reported sighting? We were driving around at that time.
Linsie
Reported sightings of her around 4 PM tonight. I have been around the area for over the last two hours and could not see anything
Padster
Thanks Chilebat and well done on looking after the scared dog. Amazing how many people will drive on by with a "not my problem" attitude, I wonder how many have done just that with Sandy? I will be out and about over the weekend too so may bump into you!
Fiona - we will be looking for a suitable place to set up a new feeding station.
Chilebat
Been away for a few days visiting family, will have a look at the map and get my husband to take me out tonight and during the weekend to see if we can see Sandy. While away I came across a terrified dog in the middle of a busy road with everyone driving past, luckily for him we did stop and kept him safe until he was reunited with his owners a few hours later.
fionap58
He def looks like he's sticking to the top end of that map, would someone in that area, possibly someone who's reported a sighting, set up a feeding station somewhere he could eventually be shut in like a back garden with gated entrance?
Padster
Just to clarify one of the sightings from yesterday. A lady saw Sandy sitting on Setter Combe (which is in the housing estate off Priory Lane) on the edge of the small park area there, she was able to follow him/her to Priory Lane but couldn't keep up. Please keep a look out if in the area.
This is the link to the map I've started plotting sightings on:
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z8FQ19xCHZow.kNj7GaEpAmiM&usp=sharing
Padster
That's a shame, but I did think it was a bit strange that we weren't aware of a missing lurcher in the area! As we were, then. Let's hope for lots more sightings.
Linsie
Unfortunately looks like a misunderstanding with the person that posted on facebook who thought she knew the owners. They were just concerned people who were also looking for Sandy.
Padster
Thanks Fiona - we think the building site was the wrong place for feeding as it was hard to access and monitor and he hasn't been seen there so much recently. Judging by the number of sightings today in and around the Quelm Park/Warfield Road area (two more sighting by a lady on/near Priory Lane as well), the Copse in Quelm Park (Piggy Wood) sounds like a much better place to feed, smaller area and much easier to monitor. I will go over and investigate this area (I know Carole has been there today).
I have been plotting the sightings on a map and yes, I can probably make out a triangle from them, with a cluster in one particular corner of the triangle, which is where Piggy Wood can be found.
I've also had a call from Ray Deadicoat today, mentioned below by Rottie. He was very helpful, gave advice and is very happy to come down with his trap and help us out.
All quite positive today.
Obviously waiting on news on the interesting development from Linsie. Cautiously optimistic!
Linsie
I am awaiting further information, but we may have an owner, I have advised Judith and Carole. Further details to follow.
fionap58
PS if you get a map and plot the sightings you usually find they form a triangle and you can maybe predict where he's sleeping.
fionap58
Re the feeding, it is still definitely worth putting food down regularly. The idea is to draw the dog to one spot and keep him in that area so even if foxes are eating it as the dog is coming out during the day and the foxes at dawn and dusk, and as long as there is something like Chappie mixed in for smell, eventually he'll come across it and keep going back to see if there's more the next day. If he eats there once then theres nothing for 4 days he won't go back. It doesn't sound like you'll catch him any other way as he's almost certainly feral by now
Linsie
I sent a copy of the picture to the person that reported seeing him/her today in Bullbrook area, she confirmed that it was Sandy that she saw.

I have just got back from going round the whole area for the last 1.5 hours - up to the housing estate all round the Wick Hill area and through Bullbrook and around Larks Hill multiple times and didn't see anything
BonBon
Just got back after nearly 2 hours searching but no luck. Apparently seen about an hour earlier on Harvest Ride opposite Larks Hill entrance by several people. Just had message from Linsie re a reported possible sighting of our dog heading from Bullbrook onto Holly Spring Lane. This could lead him straight back to the Warfield Road and could mean this was the direction he took when he came out of Huson Road. She is having a good look round but, at the speed he travels, he could be anywhere now.
Padster
Another sighting, 3pm today on Huson Road, Quelm Park, running towards Warfield Road. This is very near Atte Lane and not far from Staverton Close, where he's been seen before.
I'm at work but BonBon is en route there now.Last edited: 2015-05-28 15:07:40 by Padster

Was going to phone you this evening re feeding station. Like you, I'm not sure it is worth while leaving it there until we have more knowledge on Sandy's movements. If he was being seen by the builders on a daily or regular basis it might be different. We definitely need more info on his movements. I have done a bit of driving around in the hope of a sighting - without success.
Padster
Thanks, yep apparently Fred was reunited within days, have had a reply! Strange they still list him as missing on their site!

Thought it might be helpful to summarise sightings in date order:

27th April 8am: running down Atte Lane, Quelm Park
10th May 1.30pm: running along Harvest Ride, crossed road into Berkeley Homes site (my first sighting)
18th May: In field by copse on Berkeley Homes site (my 2nd sighting)
22nd May 5:15am: walking down Staverton Close, off Shepherds Lane, Garth area
22nd May: Bracknell Tip, Longshot Lane - moving in the area of the tip (exactly where is unclear)

Several sightings from the builders at Berkeley Homes site and also along Harvest Ride, and in Garth Meadows. No dates for these but over a period of at least a month. I think he was seen on Harvest Ride this morning.

My builder friend has checked the feeding station this morning and the food is gone. Unfortunately this isn't very helpful as it could easily have been foxes. Sandy has not been seen near the feeding station. I'm not sure if it's worth continuing with the food until we have a better idea of Sandy's pattern of movement. What do people think?

Posters are up are Larks Hill and Garth Meadow. More will be going up along Quelm Lane (footpath that runs from Larks Hill to Shepherds Lane and could be Sandy's route to the tip), Atte Lane and Piggy Wood (copse area in Quelm Park) shortly. I will visit the tip in the next day or so and ask if he is seen there regularly.Last edited: 2015-05-27 16:07:24 by Padster

Hi Linsie - good to chat and catch up with you after so long.
Thanks for the links and approving me on first site. I now await approval for Binfield. Good to know that Sandy is being spread around these groups. The more sightings we can get logged the sooner we can, hopefully, know the routes this dog is taking. At the moment it is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack! Good luck with your daughter's exams!

Another sighting reported for Friday, on a residential road not far from the building site at 5.15am. It was later that day that Sandy was seen at the tip.
ClaireC
Rubbish tips are always a good and reliable food outlet! I wouldn't mind betting that he also will have a warm and cosy "den" there as well!
Padster
I think I was the last one to see him at the building site on Monday. My builder friends will report any sightings and haven't let me know of any since then.
I've started marking sightings on a map.
Chilebat
When was the last sighting of Sandy at the building site? It is worrying that Sandy has been sighted at the tip where it is built up and more people about but another food resource. I wonder if the tip would have by chance Sandy on their CCTV footage. Am able to see live online the camera shot at the entrance to the tip, it's for people to see if there is a queue at the tip.Last edited: 2015-05-24 17:15:20 by Chilebat

We've had a phone call today with a sighting of Sandy on Friday 22nd at the Bracknell Tip on Longshot Lane. That's almost 2km as the crow flies from the building site. There's a worrying number of busy roads to cross to get between the two areas. Our Sandy is pretty resourceful! I'll try and get out to the tip to ask the guys who work there if Sandy is seen there regularly.
We also had another sighting from someone who lives in the housing estate on the other side of the road from the building site, she saw Sandy running past her house on 27th April.
Padster
I did look long and hard at Reiver and he does look very similar, but I'm almost certain our dog is bigger. My own boy is 24" at the shoulder and I'm certain Sandy is at least as tall as him if not taller. Also, Sandy appears to have a thin black tail, certainly has some black around his rear end, Reiver has a fuller, lighter coloured tail. I wouldn't rule him out completely, but I think it's unlikely - I wish it was as poor Reiver has been missing for years.
As for Beans, he looks short-haired, Sandy is rough haired so I don't think so.
I really wish I could get a better picture of him.Last edited: 2015-05-23 15:05:05 by Padster

Wonder if this could be Beans stolen in Dec 2014 from Pembury, Tunbridge Wells? I have emailed his owner to ask if she would take a look at this page.

Please could someone who has seen this dog check 36096 Reiver? Who is 20" to shoulder.
fionap58
Good news that everyone is cooperating and you can get easy access, and great that 2 of you are on board so you can share the doling out of the food and any visits etc. Don't worry about foxes taking the food, once Sandy smells it and knows its a regular feeding spot he will make sure he gets enough. Don't think its 36096 as this dog looks bigger, darker and older. Sandy looks so like my lovely old lurcher Indie I do hope he (or she) can be helped. Good work Padster and Bonbon. And remember this could take weeks so don't be downhearted if nothing happens for a while x

BonBon and I set up the feeding/water station yesterday evening on the edge of the copse near where Sandy is most often seen. We put it in view of the builders because he/she has shown now signs of fear around people and at least that way they may see him/her using it. Unfortunately we didn't see any signs of him/her in or around the copse. I've asked my builder friends to text me with any sightings. We'll be postering over the weekend asking for sightings and I'm sharing all over Facebook asking people to let me know if they see anything. Not much more we can do until we can establish a pattern. I'll check the feeding station over the weekend to see if anything has been taken, but of course, it could just be foxes!

All a bit frustrating.
Padster
I spoke to someone on the farm that owns the land, yesterday, the owner is away on hols but this chap was quite happy for me to come along and gain access through the farm so BonBon and I are going over there after work today. I have food and water. Hopefully we'll see Sandy there and at least be able to get close enough to tell if he's a he or a she! It would put my mind at rest to find he's a male so no chance puppies are involved.
I now have the office and out of hours phone numbers for Dogbusters so can call them when needed (thanks for finding out who the council uses, Carole). A friend has also contacted Diana Brimblecombe. They don't take lurchers but will talk to Southern Lurcher Rescue who will hopefully take Sandy in if no owners come forward.
I have also spoken to the PCSO who the site had already involved. She's very keen to help and anxious that Sandy is caught and safe soon. She's very disappointed in the RSPCA who have never got back to her. She can't come this evening but is more than happy to help out over the weekend.
Will update tomorrow.Last edited: 2015-05-21 14:48:21 by Padster

The contractor used to be SDK but according to the council website it is now Dogbusters. I have no idea where they are based but assume council could tell us as and when appropriate. Will be speaking with Padster again later.
fionap58
Who collects the stray dogs then Bonbon? Where would Sandy go if he were to be caught?
Padster
Great, thanks Chilebat. Yes, I have the contact details of the policewoman now. I'll try and call her today.
Chilebat
My daughter is trying to see if she can find out from her friend who happens to live along that lane! Failing that I'm sure those at Keith's farm shop on the right as you turn into west end lane would know whose land it was, unable to drive at the moment otherwise I would have gone over there myself. Hopefully it was the poor weather we had here today for the reason for Sandy not being seen today. Padster, did you get given the details of the policewoman who is aware of Sandy? I wonder if she had approached the farms in that area to see if they recognise the dog. Last edited: 2015-05-19 19:57:37 by Chilebat

Hi All, sorry for silence, I've had a manic day, and haven't been able to get over there today, so no update other than a text from one of my new builder friends saying Sandy's not been seen today! Thanks for all the offers of help and advice.

What would be great is if one of you could contact the farmer who owns the land behind the development, as I would like to be able to get access from the Cabbage Hill side (there is a layby at the gate to the land on Forest Road), rather than having to go through the building site. That would mean I can get in out of hours, which would be more convenient for me. I don't know the name of the farm but it's the one at the end of West End Lane, which you can also access from Harvest Ride, the entrance is on the right (if heading towards Binfield) just before the building site starts. I want to ask for permission to enter via the gate on Forest Road (I can climb over). I'd be happy to text them to tell them each time I (or others) go in so they know we are there. The builders are not sure if the farmer even knows about Sandy - fortunately he doesn't have livestock or I suspect he'd be straight out there with a gun. I'm no good at making phone calls! Please can someone let me know if they can do this? If not, I'll drive up there after work tomorrow or Thursday.

Will update as soon as I have any more info.

Thanks again.
BonBon
fionap58 - we no longer have a dog warden for Bracknell.

fionap58
Great that Padster is getting some support. What a shame that RSPCA or dog warden won't help!

chap called ray dedicoat i am sure will offer you lots of advice, he has caught endless dogs in traps in this type of situation, he helped me catch a saluki which was an unwanted stray in newark town cente, his number is 01564 823244, he might even be able to help you locate a tall enough trap, brilliant man x Good luck
BonBon
Hi Padster - I am also local (and also recovering from op!) but could probably help in some way. I will text you my number so that we can speak at your convenience as know you work. Carole
Chilebat
Padster I am local but due to an op not very mobile and annoyingly unable to walk across a field. If there is anything else I could be useful for please let me know. I could be more helpful during the weekends as my family would be around to help. I was searching online last night and found a story that appeared in the Get Reading on the 15 May 2015 about a stray being caught in a trap after three months by the dog warden there who enlisted the help of a volunteer from a lost and found dog service. I thought if contacted the volunteer may help with Sandy or know of another volunteer that would help. Let me know know what you think.Last edited: 2015-05-19 09:25:58 by Chilebat
fionap58
That's my kind of lurcher!
If there's no one to help then setting up a feeding station is quite easy but it sounds like he's a bit of a free spirit and able to easily feed himself so it may not be easy to keep him close to any food and impossible to catch him. All you can do is try and get him used to going to the same place over and over to get food. The idea is to get him used to the scent and sight of food/water bowls and a blanket, then get a trap from somewhere and slowly begin to introduce the bowls into the trap. So, you need to put out a cheap dry food with a bit of tinned Chappie mixed as it's smells strong and will attract him, place it along with a bowl of water somewhere a trap of up to 5ft long by 3ft wide and tall will fit. It needs to be out of public sight but within reach of a vehicle as the dog may be collected while still in the trap if he is a bit wild. Don't worry about this stage, it will be a while and I'm sure someone will help you. Just feed and water regularly, use a big bowl then you needn't go every day and monitor what's going on. You really are very kind to do this as obviously no one else seems to give a monkeys! Good luck x
Padster
Monday update: I went over to the site this morning and they are being really helpful and accommodating. I was taken up to the area where Sandy is most often seen. It's a large field which is currently being dug up and flatten by the diggers.
He was actually there, in the field eating the old remains of a deer! We got to within about a 100 yards but he wandered off as we got closer. He's bigger than I thought, large lurcher size and has a white chest and black down his tail.
It's the digger drivers who see him most and one of them had taken some pictures. It's not a very good one, but I've added one to the profile. Apparently Sandy has been around for about a month and in that time has taken down and eaten about 12 deer!
They are very happy for me to set up a feeding station and I think I can get access to the woods from the other side through the farmer's field which will be easier than getting kitted up with hi-viz and hard hat to go through the building site!
They are now keen to have him caught as they are worried about him maybe causing an accident (he's often seen running along the roads nearby) or hurting someone (I think that's unlikely but I suppose he could hurt a child). A police woman has been involved and I'm just waiting for one of the guys from the site to text me her name/number.

Are there any local folk who would be willing to help me out with a feeding station? I've not done this before!
Padster
Great, thanks Beezle. Will be in touch if we get that far.
DogLostBeezle
Hi Padster. I'm only in Wokingham so not far away. Call 01189746000 if you think the trap might be needed.
Chilebat
You found out lots of information. Good to hear that Sandy seems to be being seen in the same place.
Padster
Update: I stopped off at the building site on the way to work this morning and spoke to the Project Manager, Mark. He was very helpful and accommodating. He said the dog (I'm going to call him/her Sandy as that works for male or female and I prefer that to saying "it") has been reported to the police and RSPCA but neither are able/willing to do anything about it. He's happy for me to come on site and have a look around. Apparently Sandy hasn't been seen by the builders this week so it seems I'm the last person to see him/her, but generally is seen in the small woodland area which is just outside the fencing of the building site - the wood is surrounded on the other sides by fields. Sandy has been seen taking down deer (which is why they reported to police/RSPCA). I asked if they could tell if Sandy is male or female (in case there might be puppies) but Mark said that they can never get close enough before he/she runs off.
I've changed the breed to "Lurcher" as that's how Mark described Sandy and I think that's a more helpful description than cross breed. I did think he/she looked lurcher-ish when I saw him/her.
I wanted to get access over the weekend but apparently that would be difficult so I've agreed to go over again on Monday, when I don't work so I can have a proper look around. I had thought the woods is the more likely area Sandy would be keeping to, so that would make setting up a feeding station quite easy.
I'll update again after I've been over on Monday.
fionap58
It doesn't really matter how big it is, if you can find somewhere quiet, preferably with a bit of shelter, and put some food out the dog will find it. These building sites usually have the portacabin/container style offices so perhaps a bit of wood, like an old door or something, lodged up against the back or one of these with a blanket and some food?
Chilebat
Just got my husband to drive me over there, had gone past the site before but didn't realise how big it is until tonight!
Padster
No problem, GillyP, I know what the corporate world is like! Thanks for your help!

Hiya, you think it would be easy!! still trying
Padster
Great, thanks GillyP. If you want to call me when you find out I can progress it. My mobile number is 07740 203421.

Hi Beezle - thanks that's great. Which area are you Dog Warden for?
DogLostBeezle

Not 100% but I think that dog was Duchess who was seen there before and she is now home.
Padster
Hi GillyP - I thought I'd seen something about a dog seen on the Berkeley Homes site before, but I couldn't find anything. I searched the lost and found sections for any dog in this area and there was nothing which is why I posted - thought I must have imagined it! Thanks for sharing. Would you be able to help us get permission to set up a feeding station? Do you know the right person to contact? It would probably be best if we were able to go in outside of working hours when it's quiet and he/she is more likely to come out. I'm sure I can get together a few people who would be happy to help.
Unknown
I think this one has been reported on here before as I work for Berkeley Homes and was able to contact the Gate Man. Hopefully if he/she is still in the same area a feeding station can be set up.
Padster
Thanks both. Yes, a friend has suggested a feeding station, I'll speak to the Site Manager about that. I didn't have time to get to the site yesterday to talk to anyone, and if I can't today, will definitely get there tomorrow as I drive passed on way to work.
Chilebat - I would say the dog was about average collie sized but skinnier and short haired. Good idea ref rescues, will get in touch and see what they say. Also, if it's a stray it's likely to end up at one anyway, so good to get their buy in early.
Will keep you informed.
fionap58
Could you set up a feeding station in or near the building site, out of the way and somewhere quiet? Maybe put a box or some blankets somewhere sheltered if they'll let you. It could take weeks to gain the dogs trust but if you can keep it in the same place and safe that's the most important thing. Ask the men on the site not to try and chase him unless they can shut him in somewhere or he'll freak and run then you'll not be able to keep an eye on him. Eventually if you can keep him in the same place it might be possible to set a dog trap but you'll have to ask on here where the nearest one is. Hope that helps x

I wonder if a local dogs home would be able to give advice about what to do? We have Diana Brimblecombe, Binfield Dog Rescue and Border Collie Spot nearby all excellent places. I know you didn't get a good look at the dog but could you judge what size it was? Would be good to know from guard how long it has been around for, may possibly be pups involved. Worried about the dog as seems to be living in a building site which is not good.

No markings I could see. It was hard to see much to be honest as I was driving and the dog was running. I think there may have been some white and black feathering on its tail/back legs, but not 100% sure. I didn't actually see its face as it was running away from me.

Were there any other markings on the dog?

I saw this dog running along Harvest Ride in Bracknell yesterday afternoon. It ran across the road and wriggled under the locked gates to the Woodhurst Park, Berkeley Homes building site. I stopped at the entrance and called it and offered treats but it was nowhere to be seen. I finally managed to attract the attention of the Security Guard and he told me the dog has been there a while and they can't catch it.

I've tried calling the Dog Warden but apparently, Bracknell has no Dog Warden and the council will do nothing unless you have actually caught the dog.

I have searched lost and found on this site but not found this dog listed.

I'm not sure what to do next. I live nearby so can go and talk to the Site Manager but would need some advice and help from experienced folk on here as to how to go about finding and catching this dog.
