Fantastic news - well done everyone, so pleased, especially for Lisa & family. In time would love to know if he was still on the golf course & how you got him to come to you, but for now the main thing is he's safe - well done!

DO NOT CALL HIS NAME THIS WILL TRIG HIS FLY MODE. NEVER APPROACH HIM WHEN HE IS STANDING AS HE WILL RUN. HIS OLFACTORY SECTION OF HIS BRAIN IS MOST THAN LUCKILY CLOSED DUE TO HIGH ADRENALINE. When y see Alfie do not approach sit down at least 40 meters away. Calm yourself down first breath feel like a tree be part of nature clear y mind relaxed do not focus on him sing or read a book helps. Do not look at Alfie but look down and away. If Alfie lip licks or starts blinking his eyes these are signs of stress. Yawn and look down and away. Use only stinky smelly food but throw it his way without eyes contact. Move calmly slowly and in a relaxed way. Keep y adrenaline low as dogs pick it up immediately. Do not go close to him as he will run. Whatever y do to gain his attention without focusing on him it must be done to a safe distance 30-40 meters at the very least. Do not walk in pair as he will feel hunted and only one person should sit down when y find him everyone else should stay well out of the way. He will go in panic mode if he has to checke what more than one person is doing and it will trig his fly mode. Do not rush be prepared to sit all day without leaving site as most of the time this is what it takes to gain their trust without trigging the fly mode Last edited: 2015-06-25 07:23:15 by Monica - Area Volunteer, South London

I was out again tonight, met Lisa and also another couple out searching, but no further sightings so far. I spent time on both sides of the golf course (either side of the A217) and on the Downs on the other side of the railway (heading back towards the prison), but the hope is he has remained on the eastern half of Banstead Downs golf course - where today's sightings were. We suspected he had gone to ground for the night and I think Lisa is aiming to be out early tomorrow, hopefully he will decide tomorrow is the day to come home.Last edited: 2015-06-24 22:23:13 by BlackLab

NickyB
just spend as much time where he was seen, keep calling his name, and walk round and round the area until exhausted. keep going back. it worked for us when a collie x bolted when extending lead dropped and terrified her. took 3 days but eventually she appeared through the trees.......
csquaredb
Is he entire? If so, would be worth getting someone with a bitch in season to take a wander in the area he's been seen today. Good to have the timeline. x
BlackLab
Thanks for the updates, hoping he is caught this afternoon, but if not I will try to get out again this evening. Hopefully he will stay in that small area and not try to cross the railway or the A217.

More sightings today by Lisa at Banstead station end of the golf course
BlackLab
Monica, sounds like we were in similar areas yesterday evening. I did see what I took to be a family having a walk on the golf course, but in hindsight perhaps that was other searchers.

I'm not sure yet if I'll be able to get out tonight, but I can try to bring more posters if I do. Question though - when you say at 06.48 you want more posters, do you mean of the other dog & not Alfie? I get what you are saying in the 06.28 post about two posters in same area, but then I'm not sure if you have changed your mind in the second one and want Alfie posters or the other dog (is it Wallace?)?

Sadly I saw a contractor changing the adverts in Belmont station bus stop taking a poster down last night, unfortunately I was driving & couldn't stop, but I guess a reminder to people to think where placing them as ones on paid for adverts like that will probably get removed.

I have circulated Alfie's Dog Lost Poster to the following local veterinary surgeons: Banstead Village Veterinary Surgery (on Banstead High Street); Priory Veterinary Surgeons (on Banstead High street and Tadworth, Reigate, Redhill); Kriek and Gibson Veterinary Surgeons (on the A217 Brighton Road); Wingrave Veterinary Surgeries (Epsom and Sutton); Parkside Veterinary Surgeons (Carshalton).

If anyone can help with posters please let me or Lisa the owner know. Posters are important to get sightings and alert local community
Monica - Area Volunteer, South London
Lisa can y add comments below rather than on the posters. On the poster y should just state reward and do not approach call and follow by distance.
Blacklab I was near Banstead golf club caddington golf club caddington way and priest hill for 4 hours yesterday. If Alfie is not scared he ll stay near water as I predicted already last week to Lisa he ll come this way. Posters of another dog which has been straying for a while have gone up. As the posters have got my number I will get sightings. I dint think it is good idea to put posters up for both as I fear he might confuse the public and the sightings as they are now both in same area. However I am opened for suggestions. I was on site yesterday with two volunteers from my area and we split in different directions in the time we were there. Alfie was seen in Banstead golf club then from my understanding but Lisa should confirmed he was seen on the side of the station on the A217.
BlackLab
Just back from more searching this evening, concentrated on Banstead Downs Golf Club after the sighting, walked many of the paths through the course and round the perimeter as well as watching the open spaces, but no sign. There is a large reservoir at the Banstead end of the course, next to the greenkeepers buildings & the shooting range, which could be a good water source, but no sign whilst I was there. On a whim I also drove up to Epsom Downs at the end, thinking that we seem to 24hrs behind a lot of the sightings and that he could be heading in that direction. I wandered around for 20 mins or so at dusk, but nothing tonight. Hopefully tomorrow is the day!
csquaredb
I've asked the warden at Priest Hill nature reserve to keep an eye out for Alfie, in case he has crossed the A217
BlackLab
Monica - the dog I saw on the Oaks Golf Course on Sunday evening was almost certainly too large for a Shi Tzu, more like a Schnauzer or a large Patterdale.

I only managed to get out for a brief walk at dusk yesterday, too late for the woods, but will be out again this evening.

I saw mention on FB of a sighting on Banstead Downs Golf Club (as opposed to the Oaks) yesterday - do we know which side of the A217 this was? Banstead Downs Golf Club sits on both sides of the mad mile, if it was the eastern side, he may have crossed the railway (hopefully by the bridge!), but not necessarily the dual carriageway and still be closer to the earlier sightings around the prison. If it was the western side, then that changes the search area I would suggest?

Yes, Borough of Epsom and Ewell is just across the A217 (alongside Banstead Downs) and easily reached by a dog. Telephone number for Epsom and Ewell Borough Council (Surrey County Council) is 01372 732000. Telephone number for London Borough of Sutton is 020 8770 5000.
Unknown
Might be worth adding the borough of Epsom and Ewell too
Liberty Belle
The area being searched is right on the boundary with two local authorities - (1) London Borough of Sutton and (2) Reigate and Banstead Borough Council (part of Surrey County Council). It might be advisable to contact both authorities for Dog Warden and Highways (dead animal removal). The contact number for Reigate and Banstead Borough Council is 01737 276000.

There are two dogs lost and within 1.3 miles from each other. Alfie has not been seen since Thursday and he has moved. I ve advised the owner that no sighting should go unchecked as Alfie travelled quite a distance on the first day. I am aware that other sightings ve been reported to the owner and not checked. I have not been made aware of these reports although I have spent 25 hours in 4 days looking for Alfie and putting posters up. No sightings should go unchecked as it is such closed distance Last edited: 2015-06-22 22:59:07 by Monica - Area Volunteer, South London

BlackLab there is a shih tzu missing I have heard it yesterday! I think Alfie has moved and more posters are required to get more sightings. Lisa the owner should check again with the Highway Agency that no dogs have been found/collected in the area. Oaks park and Banstead Common and near by areas need more posters now. I have started putting posters in near by area by help is required
BlackLab
Been out again this evening, no sign of Alfie I'm afraid, but saw lots more posters around. I covered the area of the Downs between Sutton Lane & the prison, walked around the prison itself and along the Fairlawn Road path up to Oaks Park & the Lavender field.

I did however see another small black dog which was running loose across the Oaks golf course with no owner in sight. This was definitely *not* Alfie, it was definitely black and not dirty, about the size of a large terrier or a Miniature Schnauzer. I will keep a close eye out for reports of a missing dog matching this description, but I don't want to log it as a 'Found' yet in case it wasn't lost. The reason I mention it here is because it headed in the direction the land behind the prison where Alfie may be and at the point it disappeared into hedgerow I found a two or three day old dog poo suggesting it could be a route being used regularly by a loose dog(s). This was about 7.30 this evening, I was a few yards into the path which runs along the back gardens of Sunnymede Ave & the edge of the Oaks, just off the Fairlawn Rd path. The dog ran from left to right across the valley in front of me and into the hedgerow separating the golf course and the Fairlawn Rd path at the point where that path is at it's widest in a little dell with a rope swing in the trees. I followed across the golf course to that point, but never saw the dog again, but neither did I see or hear any other walkers/potential owners on that path. It's possible it had run out in the opposite direction and was running back, but I didn't see it and I had been standing at a gap in the hedge for a few minutes watching for signs of Alfie - if it was my dog that far off the path I was on and out of sight for that long I would have been chasing & calling, all of which made me suspicious this might be another loose dog in the area so I wanted to mention it - but equally it could be a red herring as well.Last edited: 2015-06-21 23:02:11 by BlackLab

Now thst you have sightings of Alfie, are you doing bbqs in the immediate area ? I know this helps keep a dog in the area as they are very hungry at this stage. Xx
Mandsk
Sorry I couldn't stay any longer Monica, but you are determined and if anyone finds him it will be you! So many shares now, and lots of posters. Not long now I hope
Monica - Area Volunteer, South London
Please do not chase Alfie and do not approach him. All sighters confirmed that Alfie run away as soon as he saw people. We do not want him to move from that location as he has been there 6 days and although last sighting reported today was Thursday I believe he is still there. He has his safe place now and he goes back to it. We do not want Alfie moved from that area and neither run over. So follow from distance if y do see him but I mean DISTANCE! We need to have further sightings to understand where his safe area is and work on a smaller area. I need information like how further down from high down road or freedom lane on the left or right hand side of the path etc all these info will take us close to his location. Several dogs I ve helped returned to the same safe area. I have explained to Lisa the owner that Alfie will more than luckily not approach her so she also has to keep distance and allow Alfie to come out of his fight to fly mode. So please look out but do not approach him. If y seem him look away and do not paying him any attention . The area is quite busy with joggers horse riders dog wakes and we do not want Alfie to feel hunted. Last edited: 2015-06-21 00:31:35 by Monica - Area Volunteer, South London

I was there until 23:30 and walked until 22:15 playing a familiar sound with a recorder. No sighting. A sat in the car for just over an hour playing his familiar sound. There was something moving in the near woodland. I waited 20 mins before deciding to leave food on the other side of the bushes on the pavement. There was something defo there it could ve been a fox but somehow I think they are more brave considering I was in the car. I ve waited another half hour before I left. Whatever was on the other side it was too scare to come out and I did not want to check as if it was Alfie I did not want to scare him. I access Fairlawn Farm on foot by the prison and put posters there. It is a private property so they told me off but they were ok at the end. The fields behind are truly open space and Alfie would not go there if he is not scared as he is keeping low ground. I will be out am till late afternoon tomorrow. Thanks Blacklab for y support x Last edited: 2015-06-21 00:14:09 by Monica - Area Volunteer, South London

Put some more posters up around the Downs this afternoon and saw a number of others too. Spoke to a few dog walkers & horse riders, some had seen other posters which was good. Walked around the Downs on both sides of Sutton Lane, down to the railway and the length of Freedown Lane, but sadly no sign.

There are a lot of fields behind the prison, but inside the triangle of Freedown Ln, Sutton Lane & Downs Rd/Fairlawn Rd. If Alfie is lying low in that area, he will be hard to spot from the public footpaths as they only go around the edge of it. The fields mostly seem to be used for horse grazing, having a look a Google Maps the riding centre/stables at the junction of Freedown & Fairlawn Roads seems the most likely entry point to these fields, but I have no idea if they own/have access to all of them. It might be worth getting in touch with them if they haven't already been spoken to, perhaps they might be willing to let Alfie's owner walk across their fields.Last edited: 2015-06-20 21:00:58 by BlackLab

Blacklab there is not proof that dogs can track another dog they can pick up the scent but not tracking. So no I would not reccomend this to the owner. Xx

Ok Alfie on Monday was seen in the car park prison and woodland in front of prison between down rd and high down rd. now he has moved on either site so between high down rd and freedom lane. From there he can walk back to oaks park. So he is in that circle. It is impossible to walk in all this area but I promised y I am going to find him! The owner is Lisa I am just coming all the way from Thornton Heath to help as I am a canine therapist and I ve experienced approaching scare dogs and also helped many other owners in the past. Blacklab any assistance y can give call Lisa on no above or me on 07961 893854 just keep in mind I am not local although I ve been down here for the last 3 days and I ll be here all day tomorrow from early morning to late evening. Next update tonight as mobile battery is needed x Last edited: 2015-06-20 16:44:31 by Monica - Area Volunteer, South London

Hello BlackLab,

Thank you for your suggestions and much needed help with posters. Monica is kindly doing the co-ordinating on the ground and is travelling a fair way to search and put up posters each day. xx
BlackLab
Sorry, lots of questions - Is there any more specific detail on where the sightings were? I will head out later with some more posters.

I'm confused as to who the owner is & who is co-ordinating the search, so not sure who to address this to, but some suggestions of local places that would be worth contacting if they haven't been already in addition to the usual local dog wardens, council, highways agency, national rail etc:

Diamond Riding Centre
Queen Elizabeth Foundation on Woodmansterne Rd
Oaks Park Golf Club
Houses on Pine Walk & The Warren backing on to Oaks Park Golf Club in case he is hiding in gardens/sheds etc
Mayfield Lavender
Garden Centres on the Banstead to Purley/Woodmansterne road
Travellers site opposite entrance to Mayfield Lavender
Downview/Highdown Prisons
Hengest Farm
Any of the farms/stables locally in case he is hiding in outbuildings

I know it may be difficult with the time lapsed & the number of dogs that use Oaks Park, but has any thought been given to contacting the owners of one of the Search/Sniffer dogs that have been used in other DogLost searches?

Thanks to everyone who is looking out for this boy. Me and Amanda respectively from Thornton Heath and streatham started putting up posters today. The area is not in our favour as it is very rural and also we are both not familiar with it. Help is required desperately to put as many posters to get a sighting. Due to lack of poster last confirmed sighting was on Monday. If anyone can put posters up when y out for a walk with y dogs please let me know and I can arrange for leaflets to be given. Anyone is Banstead cheam Belmont carshalton willing to put posters near y area please get in touch. I advised Lisa that A0 posters and also a couple of banners might actually be better especially as I am finding hard to reach the local community spirit. An advert on local newspaper is also a good idea. Is there anyone willing to contact a local newspaper for me? There have not been reports from the highway agency so Alfie is still out there tired confused thirsty hungry scared. Alfie is an oldie he has arthritis on his back legs and he needs to be back home in his confi bed. Please help if y can x

No sign around Oaks Park this evening unfortunately, but did see some posters up. Will keep looking, come on Alfie, time to go home.

It seems that the dog near Ewell East was not Alfie. A dog was hit by a van in the same area where the stray dog has been seen for a week so we have to believe and hope it is not Alfie. The area is very rural and I beg any local people to spend whatever time they can offer to help Lisa with posters so. Last confirmed sighting is on Monday today it is Friday and we urgently need another sighting. Please share help on ground keep checking websites as Linda needs help and Alfie needs his mum. A scent has now been put in last know locations highway agency will be contacted today nearby councils will be contacted too just in case Alfie is picked up and reported to finder council.
