- Barney disappeared 3 weeks and 5 days ago so it is very unlikely that there would be a scent to follow. There is much debate about how long scent can last, but I think all of us with tracker dogs would consider this too long.

- A good deal of media coverage in local papers and on BCC Sussex page - praying this brings some information someone somewhere knows what happened to this beautiful dog and they need to come forward.

- Jenny4, Barney was on his own land......
- 2015-08-12 09:26 Unknown
- Sorry to say this Skywalker, though it may be an an offence not to report a shooting some Farmers will just bury a dog....so as not to get any come back from owners..... not saying this is the case with Barney as he is a farm dog...... but we had it happen a few years ago in Cornwall and I am sure it happens in other places too .......hoping and praying Barney is found real soon and I agree wont a tracker dog be useful?x
- 2015-08-12 09:14 Unknown
- Hope Barney will be found soon. Paws xd
- 2015-08-12 06:45 Skywalker99
- Also Barney lives on a farm and was being walked on the owner's own land when he went missing. Any 'shot by farmer for worrying livestock'theiory would therefore be wrong, and anyway if a farmer does this and does not report to police within 48hours they have committed an offence.Last edited: 2015-08-12 10:48:36 by Skywalker99

- So sorry to read this. Would it be worth getting a tracker dog involved at this stage. If Barney was injured, he may have taken himself off into deep undergrowth. Or it may give you an indication of how he was taken from the scene.

- Sharing to local newspapers in the hope someone will come forward who knows what has happened to Barney. Very upsetting news to read. J. x

- This is a very, very disturbing development. DogLost would urge any member of the public with information to contact Sussex Police as a matter of urgency.
- 2015-08-10 19:08 Ravenette - Area Co-ordinator - West Sussex
- This sad update has been posted on Barney's fb pages Sussex Police Press Release - 'MAY HAVE BEEN SHOT AND THEN STOLEN'
Analysis of blood samples discovered where a treasured family pet went missing near Horsham have shown that it may have been shot and then stolen.
Barney, a black German shorthaired pointer, was being walked in woods with another dog around the Mayes Lane area of Warnham around 7am on July 20. The dogs ran off together and then shots were heard following by the whimpering of an injured dog.
The other dog returned to the owner and he later found some blood along with some used shotgun cartridges in woodland behind Mayes Park.
PC James Munden said: "It's not known what happened to Barney, but he is quite a valuable dog, so we are investigating the possibility that he has been stolen. He is a much loved family pet and his disappearance has been very upsetting for them."
Anyone with information is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting reference 47150094181.

Please share, spread, forward - the more publicity i can get the more chance i have of prosecuting the person responsible. - 2015-08-09 09:21 Barney
- People of thornley - The numbers i have been given for the local dog warden are:
03000 261000
03000 260000
- 2015-08-09 08:12 csquaredb
- James, just had a quick look at lost dogs up there and there are a couple of possibilities. Luna, a black greyhound 79540. Also Marley, a chocolate lab 88797. Looks to be a dark chocolate, so could be mistaken for black, and says very thin and has a short tail. Any chance you could get the sighters to check them out please. Both lost within 20 miles from Thornley.
- 2015-08-09 07:30 Barney
- I had three calls from from Thornley yesterday - all different sightings of a dog - at least similar to barney. So if anyone is actually missing a dog locally that matches his description, he is wondering around Thornley near Dunelm Road.
I will be getting updates from neighbours in the area.
From what i can conclude - the dog is def black - sounds docked, looks similar to a GSP - the grainy video i saw - but thinner than Barney. Barney would have no doubt lost weight by now, although not sure that much -but there is a stray dog up there and it would be nice to get it back to its home.. - 2015-08-08 08:10 Barney
- i did post a vague update on Facebook - but can't say more till Monday. That aside - IF he really was taken away - unless taken to a farm etc - he would be hard work for a non experienced dog owner. If he had or is being sold on, i don't expect it would be long till someone called in or decided he was too much to handle.
- 2015-08-08 08:09 Barney
- Someone from Durham area also contacted me yesterday - saying he had lived in Thornily and the dog seen was a family pet too. The dog had sounded very happy and confident knowing exactly where it was going. i do save all of the sightings just incase someone is pulling a fast one so not jumping to have them deleted from sights - just in case - but the mannerisms didn't sound like him. Also - he hated hated cats - not sure a dog could walk through a town without spotting a cat - and there would most certainly be complaints.
- 2015-08-08 08:06 Barney
- no direct updates. Worthing was nothing. Was someones family dog. Both my dogs are mainly farm dogs and although can be on leads - my other dog was the easy one on lead where as Barney would pull pull pull.. There is no way a little child and lady could be walking down a street with Barney not pulling and looking comfortable. Plus tail wasn't docked.
If Barney did get to be off lead - with anyone he didn't know - i could almost guarantee he would run run run.. and not look back.
But thank you.

- Alison - Do we know anymore about this? Where in Thornley? Looking lost? In town, park, country lane? Anywhere nearby like a pub or petrol station i could try and get some posters put up by someone? Did they leave a contact number? - in regards to this posting you did - Email sent in to admin
I am sure i saw this exact dog in Thornley County Durham. I was going
to get him or ring the police when i saw him but when i got in car to
chase him i couldn't find him. I noticed his size and no collar - 2015-08-04 22:47 Unknown
- Don't worry, I will write and apologise. I don't know the area and how it fits in with where Barney went missing from. I can only imagine that a DogLost member or member of the public thought it was a good place to poster.
- 2015-08-04 22:08 Barney
- Very sorry about the poster. I haven't been around there. If it wasn't my naughty dad I don't know who did it. Shall I call and apologise tomorrow?
- 2015-08-04 22:03 Barney
- What on earth would barney be doing there? How do
I follow this up? - 2015-08-04 21:43 Unknown
- We have had a complaint from the the Friends of Chesworth Farm about an illicit poster on the notice board at the Queensway entrance of the farm. I am not sure it is an official DogLost poster, but I would remind people that it is DogLost policy to ensure that posterers take note of conservation areas and the historic environment. In this instance I believe the poster would have been allowed had permission been sought.

- Barney wasn't wearing a collar. Doesn't mean someone hadn't pinched him and put one on. Whoever the dog belongs to i hope it is caught soon.
- 2015-07-29 16:15 Skywalker99
- Only 45 minutes by car from where Barney went missing and Iris Road is less than 1k from the A240 which the A24 becomes when it leavess Epsom so if he has been stolen and dumped........hope this dog gets caught whoever it is, too many busy roads round there
- 2015-07-29 15:55 csquaredb
- Was Barney wearing a collar when he went missing?
- 2015-07-29 15:52 csquaredb
- Suspect too far away, but just in case! "LARGE BLACK DOG (LABRADOR? ) with Red Collar running up Iris Road /Gatley Avenue West Ewell at 12.55pm but couldn't get close enough to catch or see a tag." Would be worth contacting Epsom and Ewell DW to be on the safe side.

- Barney's details have been shared on Spotted Street and Spotted Somerton FB pages and by Wessex Vets in Street and also xposted to Spotted FB pages for for wells, Glastonbury, and Cheddar, The Langport Leveller and Martock matters. - Is anyone a member of the UK shorthaired german pointer club facebook page and can post Barneys details on there? Their sussex branch has a fb page too but not many followers. james if you post Barneys details on pages like lostbox, red alert, pet alert UK you will get nationwide coverage, but also type county names plus dog lost into fb search and you will get lots of pages come up. Barney is already on Brighton Dogwatch so will have been seen sussex wide. Also pages like Wirral newsbea to, Wirral animals lost and found ha eve lots of followers if you put him on there. Try and get the 'get Surrey' fb page to share him. He needs to be in the press too.
- 2015-07-26 11:09 Barney
- Thank you for calling. The signal here is terrible. I would really like to try and expand the area i am reaching - you hear of dogs being stolen from Sussex and dumped in Somerset for example - so will try and reach further afield today.

- Yes. He was reported missing on Sunday to the police + to the warden. Since Thursday he has a theft reference number too. He doesn't run off - so unless he has got himself into a proper pickle - its looking highly likely he was pinched from my land. Just wish i knew something, anything - too many options.
- 2015-07-25 11:00 Unknown
- You have reported him missing to the police?
- 2015-07-25 10:43 Barney
- Actually i don't know - someone i know was going to find out but will chase.
- 2015-07-25 10:28 Unknown
- Are there any travellers sites in the area? They need to be checked. If the people you are emailing use facebook ask them to share his details around...
- 2015-07-24 18:32 Unknown
- Also '3 year old girls beloved pet stolen' will make a better story with the press than 'dog goes missing', it may not be how you want to project this but that's the press. This page has picked up almost 100 more shares today.
- 2015-07-24 18:30 Unknown
- If I were you I woud, still contact k9tracker just in case he is trapped somewhere. Also,, think about updating his name on his Doglost page to 'barney stolen', hate to say it but more people may look and share....there is a pet detective based near guildford, www.thepetdetectives.com. Unfortunately dogs are just chattels in law so you have to do a lot of work yourself to get them back....use the social media to make him too hot to handle and check all the selling sites, gumtree, preloved etc.

- It is looking highly likely Barney was stolen from my land, doesn't mean i will stop looking or give up on the local campaign. But it seems sensible to try and reach a much wider group now with a clear message - I will pay a reward for the return of my dog. If he has been stolen, I am more interested in getting him back then finding who did it. He is part of the family unit and we need him back.

- He is very handsome indeed. Once my daughter is in bed I will re email everyone and try and do a bulk email to vets and wardens. It's a shame there isn't a central place for everything - see you have to contact so many people yet would be so simple it for example, all wardens checked the same place - a standard process
Needs to be set up. Thank you all for the Facebook and tweets; very grateful. My 3 year old daughter is really missing barney. - 2015-07-24 17:28 Unknown
- Try contacting wwwk9tracker.co.uk to see if they can help. He is a very handsome dog.

- Just something else to be aware of if there are any shoots/gamekeepers in the area, a dog was lost near Dorking a while ago and it was found in a fox trap. May be worth trying to get on contact with local shoots? Hope Barney turns up soon.

- Just been looking at the satellite image of where he's gone missing. I'm sure you've already done it, but have you checked with all the local farms to make sure he hasn't got shut in somewhere by accident. Just to the SW of where your postcode says he was lost, someone has a covered swimming pool. You should get them to check that too (hopefully not!) Have you contacted the Highways Agency and made them aware that Barney's missing? Was he wearing a collar and tag when he was lost? Fingers crossed for a sighting of him soon x

- He is now on Brighton Dogwatch FB page where he has had almost 200 shares in the past 2 hours.

- My name is James; not sure why I wrote barney on that too. Thank you Julie for your help

- Keep up the good work Barney - he is being shared on facebook pages and if you can get the local paper to cover a story of him that would be great and raise more awareness. Julie

- Everyone in the area has been emailed with photos. I live in area on Mayes lane so most people know him too. It's likely he was stolen but because there are so many possibilities still doing the local area + outer boundaries in case lost. Going to expand search to counties later today and try and get a press release.

- You also need posters everywhere, make all local vets aware, make sure dog warden knows. You also need to check the selling sites, gumtree, preloved etcLast edited: 2015-07-23 21:47:48

- I have shared this evening on other facebook pages which are around the UK asking for people to share Barney's dog lost page. Julie

- if barney has been stolen and is now out of the search area, even meaning Facebook Sussex, Surrey etc, what is the best way to cover a more nationwide approach so more people can keep an eye out?
- 2015-07-23 18:24 Barney
- Still no sign. Been out most of the day walking and calling. I have looked in the obvious places, with high fences, tried to stick signs near places he could pop out so people know to call me. Will keep looking tomorrow. Thank you all for your help, it's greatly appreciated. Got to find him.
- 2015-07-23 18:05 Owl
- Have you checked for any enclosures he could have got himself shut in, e.g. with high fencing?

- Sorry to hear Barney is missing.
I am not that local but it might be worth contacting Mayes and Scrine Equine Vets and also Sands Farm Equestrian centre and Maple Farm Liveries. They are all quite close to where he went missing and he could have gone in any direction. Afraid i am not on Facebook but maybe someone who is can see if you can post on their pages??
I really hope he is found soon. - 2015-07-23 11:11 Julie - Area Co-ordinator - Surrey & South London
- Take posters with you and ask the Dog and Duck pub to display one I cannot find a facebook page for them - also if not done already try and put posters up including near the station and ask the station staff to look out for Barney. Arrow Taxis have Barney on their facebook page and will be looking out for them on their journeys. Julie.
- 2015-07-23 07:51 Barney
- There is a chance he ran off - chasing a deer or fox, in which case i am still looking as he would be lost and exhausted. if you type in RH12 3SG - he was in a field near Mayes Park House - my fear in that case is he would have run down to the A24 (look for dog and duck pub). and across the A24 to that area. i need to walk down the road to that leads to Warnham Train Station, and cut through those fields and find the paths the other side of A24 (Dorking Road) opposite Dog and Duck area. I also need to do the bit from the OWL pub on A24 up. Pretty much exhausted all the other areas.

- Our lovely members on Dog Lost Surrey facebook group are sharing Barney's details and Aimee who is in the area will be walking in the area searching too. The Sussex Oak at Warnham have Barney on their facebook page asking everyone to check outbuildings etc. Will also share to local taxi firms to keep an eye out too. Did Barney go missing from his home or whilst out on a walk ? Julie

- when you hear of a few dogs thefts in one area over a weekend - where do they end up? do i have to search dogs for sale nationwide incase he crops up?
- 2015-07-22 17:02 Barney

- Sorry to see that BARNEY STOLEN is missing.
- If your dog is microchipped please let the microchip company know that your dog is missing and check that all details are up to date.
- Owners targeted by a malicious hoaxer demanding money for the return of their dog should phone the police on 101 immediately and contact admin@doglost.co.uk
- A photograph of your dog is essential for the website. If you have not already uploaded one, please do so by clicking on Update details. Alternatively you can email it to admin@doglost.co.uk quoting the dog's DogLost ID number: (89739)
- Obtain a missing poster by clicking on View poster above. Posters are very important so start postering now!
- You will need to be logged in to upload photos, edit your dog's details, or add comments. You can add comments by clicking on Click here to add a comment.
- Contact dog wardens, vets and local rescue centres, and in Scotland, the Police. Give a detailed description with any distinguishing marks/scars or send them a copy of your DogLost poster. You can find vets in your area here.
- If your dog has been stolen inform the police immediately and obtain a crime reference number (CRN). Send an email to stolen@doglost.co.uk.
- If your dog is picked up and taken to rescue kennels, it can be legally re-homed after seven days. Visit rescue centres in person and do not rely on checking by phone alone. Other people may not recognise your dog by your description, so give them a DogLost poster.
- Keep us updated by keeping your dog's page up to date and check for posts from helpers who may have suggestions and possible matches or sightings
- DogLost is free and anyone asking for money to find or return your dog is not volunteering for us. If you are concerned about an approach you have received, please email admin@doglost.co.uk
