- This man has finally been jailed for stealing three dogs from a home 18 months ago
Martin MacDonagh went on the run but justice caught up with him today.
Facebook shares snared the criminal who stole three dogs worth a total of £5,000 from a home near Stroud – and today he was ordered to pay compensation and jailed.
When Martin MacDonagh and another man were caught on CCTV in January 2016 stealing English springer spaniels Maddie, Harley and Brandy, it was seen by thousands of Facebook users who shared the images far and wide.
A witness recognised him, called police, and he was arrested the following month after biting and punching a man outside a pub, Courtney Daly, prosecuting, told Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court today.
“The dogs’ owner Scott Manson was at work and he has five working dogs in Chalford near Stroud,” said Miss Daley. “While driving past his house he noticed the rear gate was open – he knew he had locked it so checked and three dogs were missing.
“He had CCTV and two offenders were seen removing three dogs. A friend of Mr Manson’s circulated the images on Facebook and asked for witnesses.
“A witness called police and officers were given the defendant’s name.
“On February 23, 2016 he was arrested on another matter and he gave a no comment interview.
“One dog was found roaming the streets in Bristol and that was the most expensive at £3,000 – the other two dogs were worth less, at £1,000 each.”
The Facebook group 'STOLEN Maddie Brandy and Harley' has more than 5,200 members who widely shared the images of the crime.
MacDonagh, of Bradley Road, Bristol was arrested after biting and punching a man outside the Pint Pot pub in Gloucester, Miss Daley told the court and he gave a ‘no comment’ interview about the dogs.
Seven-year-old Maddie, six-year-old Brandy and seven-month-old Harley were stolen while Mr Manson’s other dogs Reuben and Willow were left behind. Brandy was recovered in Bristol in February last year.
MacDonagh was charged in March last year and after failing to turn up at court in September and October last year he went on the run, then was captured and was remanded in custody on March 28 this year. He has been in jail ever since.
Will Rose, defending, handed up a psychiatric report and said his client was in poor mental health due to traumatic events in the past, and is easily persuaded.
“He is 45 and has a very long and difficult history with mental health,” said Mr Rose. “He had a very difficult background. He comes from a very closed Irish travelling family and a very traumatic event happened, and he was a victim of some awful crimes. That led to mental health difficulties and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
“He hears voices, he is of extremely low mood, he is extremely vulnerable. The theft of the dogs was not his idea – there was another man involved.”
Mr Manson is a mobile farrier and often works at Cheltenham racecourse.
Parts of his victim impact statement were read to the court by Miss Daley.
“They mean the world to me and I was gutted when they were taken,” said Miss Daley, reading his statement. “They were great dogs and I intended to breed from the older dog. I wish this had never happened. All I wanted was my dogs back.”
