Good idea to get him microchipped (yes, they do do tortoises) - I used to live in fear of being shown a tortoise (when mine was missing) and not being able to be sure whether it was mine or not. We did once get offered a tortoise at the door as everyone thought it was ours but ours was safe in the garden. Luckily, my dad immediately saw it was a different one. So many times he went off missing and we found him a few feet from where last seen, asleep under a large leaf or something similar. One time he went off on a wander and wasn't heard of for 3 weeks - turned out someone had picked him up and were keeping him in their walled garden 3 miles away until they found out whose he was. We'd had him 45 years by time he died.
