So sad, poor Bullet. We have two retrievers and they send their love & our old boy Jack, another retriever who died a couple of years ago will look after him - they look quite alike as well with the curly coat so I'm sure they'll be good pals. RIP Bullet x x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

By the edge of a wood at the foot of the hill, Is a lush green meadow where time stands still, Where friends of a man and woman do run, when their time on earth is over and done, For here between this world and the next , Is a place where each beloved creature find's rest ! On this golden land they wait and play till Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day. No more do they suffer in pain or sadness for here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness!!!! Their limbs are restored their health renewed their bodies have healed strength imbuled !!!! They run through the grass without even a care, untill one day they Stop and sniff the air !!! All ears pricked forward, eyes dart side to side, Then all of a sudden one breaks from the pack ! For just that instant their eyes have met Together again person and pet, So they run to each other these friends from long past, The time of their parting is over at last !! The sadness they felt whilie they were apart has turned into Joy once more in each heart, They embrace with a love that will last forever and side by side they cross over together !! Run wild and free BULLET with the warmth of the sun on your back forever x x Such a sweet old boy x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Tor, deepest thoughts are with you and your family at this very very sad time. It is going to take you sometime to come to terms with this devastating news. I was the proud owner of a Goldie until he was 13 years and he looked so much like Bullet. Rainbow Bridge reunions are what we all dread on DL and it makes us all feel sad. Run free at the Bridge and sweet dreams lovely Bullet you will be sadly missed. Jan xxx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just to let you all know that we had a sad phone call this morning. Bullet has been found in the river in West Camel just up the road from us. The man who found him said that he thinks he had travelled down the river to the bottom of their garden recently as they hadn't noticed anything before. But I think that he has been in their for a long time as a lady I talked to the weekend after he was missing said she heard barking early one morning near the river. As you can imagine our family is extremely sad by the news. I'd like to say thank you very much to all of you for being so kind and helping look for Bullet. Also laminated posters of Whizz and India Rose and a DogLost 'Missing Dogs' A4 sheet kindly run up by Reynard along with many sheets regarding Dolly's directive so I'll do what I can over the weekend - Lambourn Open Day and Lockinge Point to Point- looks like I shall be busy! Raining now, hope it's stopped by tomorrow :^0. Would be nice if Bullet's people could take in his look-alike at the Blue Cross, just in case he never turns up Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you dogs4eva. I have travelled along the A303 lately and there is a distinct lack of posters there, so may be now might be a good time to replenish them. We are also making an approach to a local paper to have a regular DL column with missing SW dogs in it so this may help. At risk of sounding like I am repeating myself I really think Bullets owners need to make an approach to the Western Gazette and the BMV to run story on this dear old man. He has health problems which need treating, and if someone has taken him in then this may prick their conscience.....................Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you so much Sukimax for the phone call this morning. Having looked at the web sites, the one in Wood Green is definately not Bullet, his fur is not fluffy enough and he face is broader. Whilst there are some similarities with the dog at Battersea, he is a much younger looking dog than Bullet and is larger. I am so grateful for all your help and your ongoing support. We just have to keep looking. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sukimax you are doing a grand job with trawling the sites, its a huge job, so thank you for all the efforts you are putting into looking for Bullet (and others!) I am not sure how often Bullets people are looking on here at the moment so it might be an idea to just give Bullets Gran a call on the 01404 number to alert her. Sometimes when dogs are in pounds there is a need to move quickly in case the dog is re-homed or pts, so I would hate for something to be missed..........is that ok with you? I know she will appreciate the call.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We have made contact with the Blue Cross and it isn't Bullet. This little chap was homed a few years ago with some people and they asked the Blue Cross to re-home him again on the 16th January 2008 - which is very sad. Blue Cross have had him since the day before Bullet went missing. He looks so like Bullet it is uncanny, with all of his characteristics. We feel very sad and disappointed as you can imagine, its just the not knowing that makes it worse. Thank you Dogs4eva for your call last night and everyone for their continuing care. Had a look on Blue Cross website and it looks exactly like Bullet. It does say on there that the dog has been returned for re-homing. It could possibly be that he was handed over to them a few weeks ago when he went missing and they tried re-homing him, but it did not work out. They are very specific about his age, which is slightly worrying. I will ring Blue Cross in the morning. Unfortunately I cannot get hold of my daughter at the moment to let her know. The more I look at his picture the more I am convinced it looks like him. Please keep your fingers crossed - it would be wonderful to know he is safe. Thanks once again for all your help and support you have all been fantastic.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I thought that "Ben" could be Bullet too. It makes me mad when people just let their dogs roam. I hope the owners will take notice of you. I've thought for a while now that someone has Bullet and is keeping him. Goldies are such friendly dogs (I have 9 of them) and most of mine would go off with anyone. Lets hope whoever has him sees a poster and has a conscience and gives him back to his owners. Stay safe Bullet, You are a lovely boy. xxxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just picked up a male Golden Retriever from the pub in Compton. It is NOT Bullet. It's a young dog that belongs to people new to the village. I am told by others in the village that it has been found wandering several times, I met the owner while I was taking it round the village to see if anyone knew it. He was out on his bike looking, it seems not for the first time. The dog was not tagged- I'm afraid I was a bit short with him. I think this may be the retriever that has been seen around Compton.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi everyone, Still no news. I was reading Merlin's profile last night (poor little thing), it made me think maybe the sighting on the A303 was him back in late January. It didn't sound like Bullet when the person said he ran away when they tried to catch him. Bullet is very friendly and I am starting to think that someone may have him. Apart from a golden retreiver seen on the Kingsdon Somerton road, there hasn't been any definate Golden Retreiver sightings. When I spoke to the person who saw the dog on the A303 they said that the dog was really petrified and ran off as soon as they went near it. The husband thought the dog looked more like a poodle with a really curly coat???? I really want to believe Bulllet is still out there somewhere and will have a look around the area over the weekend. I'm really worried now, it's 3 weeks...poor Bullet. Please keep your fingers crossed for the weekend.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Bullets mum -have a read of Merlins latest entries, currently on page 4, foxhound with lots of postings. It may help you with history and location of all the dog that seem to be homing in on the woods! I think the dog howling may have been the lurcher that was spotted when we were looking for Buddy, or the dog a local woman said escapes a lot from very near there. If he were after a bitch on heat he would be howling in the night like that. Unlikely that either Merlin or the lurcher would be howling unless there is a bitch in heat nearby I thinkLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes, Redlands Farm is the place to start. And yes there is another dog missing only we don't know much about him. FatMax is a missing from Butleigh, which is the other side of the hill. Merlin is still missing also. Littleton is the small hamlet in the dip before you get to Redlands Farm. I will be out with my dogs at the weekend, I'll take them up on the hill. This whole area is very popular with walkers, can I suggest that anyone who is planning to go there takes lots of small posters to hand out to anyone you meet? JanLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi everyone, I went to the woods yesterday after work and stopped at certain points and called Bullet's name. I didn't go deep into the woods as it was getting dark. I think I was in the correct area. I am planning on going to search the wooded area at the weekend. I spoke to a lovely lady who lived in Redlands cottage and she walks her dog everyday up in the woods. She didn't hear anything that night, but said she would spread the word and keep her eyes and ears open. Swizzle is correct with her location, I think. The man who phoned lives opposite the lady which sells eggs. He lives next door to Redlands Farm (is that the name you were thinking of?). This is before you get to Compton Dundan, is this Litlleton? I spoke to the lady who sells the eggs and gave her a leaflet as she gets lots of people coming in and out. I don't know much about Merlins story and was wondering if he has been found yet. I saw pictures of him by the entrance to the woods and it made me think, maybe the dog howling was Merlin. Are there any other dogs lost in this area? Thanks again everyone for all your help. We all really appreciate it.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes it is confusing! The area we are centering on is a bit further back from the pet shop - as you pass out of Littleton, and out of the 50mph limit, there is a long left hand bend. Farm on the right sells eggs and jam and stuff. On the other side of the road there is a track that leads up into the woods. The area we are interested in is on the right coming from Yeovil, before the long bend. We have a report that someone did see the dog that was barking. We are trying to speak to the person concerned. All of the woods and tracks in this area join up and there is no road access. It would be quite easy not to notice a dog living here unless he came down onto the fields by the road. All we can do is keep looking, there is certainly a dog out there - just don't know which one! Jan Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

PS Greylady is right, that's also the area where the lurcher was seen several times while people where searching for Buddy and that dog has not been caught. He is a large, beige/grey brindle rough coated lurcher with a heavy built but thin now. He could also possibly be mistaken for a bedraggled and thin Merlin unless you'de seen them together.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The area you pinpointed swizzle is the area where the dog that may have been mistaken for Merlin lives apparantly. Is it near the pet food warehouse on the left as you come from Yeovil? Has someone seen the dog that was howling or is this another dog? Do you have a description? I'm losing track of who's seen/heard what and where!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just to close out the railway enquiry - Network Rail have rung to say that they have NO reports of any dogs on the line in our area for the last week. Keep looking folks! JANLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ok great work here, can you link in with Fiona, Merlins mum as she has posted some info on his thread which maybe relevant. Its quite confusing as its in the same area and the two dogs could be confused. This sounds like it could be in the same place as a lurcher was sighted when we were looking for Buddy (see his thread in reunited, he is a lurcher) Fiona and Angierooke know where this dog was sighted as Angie saw it.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I thought about Merlin too, it's a possibility. Just spoken to someone who lives near there, she is going to walk her dog and lookout for Bullet - she is already looking out for him on her way home each day. I'll pass on the details.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've spoken to the postmistress, I know who reported the barking and I know where it was. He also said that he thinks someone else saw the dog. I will try to follow that up. The area to look is on the hill to the right of the sweeping left hand bend travelling towards Compton, just before Peak Lane. This is beyond Littleton, very close to Compton. There is a farm on the left and a track on the right of the bend, which leads into Coombe Hollow past a house - Red Barn Farm or something similar?. This leads to a network of well walked bridlepaths. What may be confusing people is that I've covered the area with posters for MERLIN! I can't get out to take them down until tomorrow. If anyone comes across one, please take it down. Will post more when I know more JanLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Do we know if this was Littleton - which is a small hamlet just before the village, or if it was the slopes of red rock hill, which is in between Littleton and Redrock? If we can narrow it down, I can enlist local help. JanLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

My Mum had another phone call today from a man in Compton Dundan He lives near the woods just beforeyou get to Compton Dundan. He said that last night he heard continuous barking and howling from10pm to 2am coming from in the woods. I will try and go there after work tomorrow and see if I can see anything. He asked the local post office if anyone had lost a dog in the area and they gave him our number. I'm not sure if it is definately Bullet as he didn't see anything. I have never heard Bullet howling, but he may be so scared and stressed you just don't know. It seems a bit of a coincidence unless there is another dog missing in the area. Hopefully this is a good sign and he is still out their somewhere. Please keep your fingers crossed. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Keep going with the postering it's the best way to spread the word . If you can, also post smaller flyers through doors in the areas that Bullet has been sighted. This might produce some more info. This happened with Picalo , as we were pushing them through the letter boxes 2 or 3 people came out to tell us about seeing him giving times etc. I so hope you get Bullet back soon. Has the owner asked Morrisons at Wincanton to put up a poster. I work there normally, but I am on holiday at the moment. The store manager lets me put posters up on the outside noticeboard, I always ask that they are posted facing the car park (its doublesided and the other side faces the shop). Usually given to the customer service desk, but I always make sure that I give them to Robert who is usually on car park duty, as he will get the key and make sure it's displayed......e mail from helper. Hi Greylady - just about to e-mail a friend who lives in Ilchester and rescues dogs to tell her about Bullet. Moonwinds is/or used to be boarding kennels, they breed GSDs. Went past recently and they are still operating from there, Limington Road, Ilchester. And yes you have got the correct location. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes that makes perfect sense! Right I think where she means is the garage on the left (as you are travelling towards Honiton) just prior to the turning to Yeovilton. I think Dogs4eva has Yeovilton sewn up, so a good idea would be to direct your search towards Ilchester and Limington. Poster on the notice boards in the village, and also the cheese factory at Ilchester as peeps will travel there from far and wide! There is also a kennel on the road between Ilchester and Limington, called something like "Moonwinds" or similar, can't quite remember, so please check that Bullet hasn't been picked up and taken in there ~ ask to look round if necessary! Don't forget to call the DW again tomorrow and the police to check out if Bullet has been sighted/picked up over the weekend. Keep positive you are doing so well!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry yes I have, and she said that what happened is they were travelling on the A303 towards London and saw a Golden Retriever dog running in the other direction (towards Honiton). When they saw him, he was a distance past the dis-used garage where the road goes from single lane to dual carrageway (before the Podimore roundabout). They turned the car around, so that they were now travelling in the same direction (towards Honiton/Podimore roundabout) and pulled up just in front of him. They tried calling him but he ran away in the opposite direction (so now travelling on the A303 towards London). By the time they had turned the car around again they said he had disappeared. They said he may have gone towards Downhead or the opposite side the turning towards Yeovilton or towards Urgashaw. As you have probably guessed my geography of the area isn't great. Does this make more sense? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ok, poster everywhere up the 303 where people will stop. East and West, as far as you can go. Garages, Little Chef, the breadshop between Sparkford and Podimore (think its at West Camel) Pubs and every lampost. You need the place flooded with posters! Do you have a laminator? If not then put them in plastic sleeves with the opening at the bottom and sellotape up with waterproof tape. Take plenty of drawing pins with you and some gaffer tape for attaching to lamposts. Most pubs will let you put flyers on the bar, and we can get some smaller scaled down versions made up for you. Good luck! This latest sighting sounds very positive but please confirm the location as best you can so we know where to concentrate the search.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Bullets mum your description of location is a bit confusing (I appreciate you are probably going on what the lady has told you) Podimore is the roundabout on the A303 which is adjoined by the A37, and Ditchet is just off the A37, but is someway North of the A303..............areyou able to go back to the lady who gave you the info and confirm the info?? I travelled along the A303 yesterday and will be doing so again today so will of course keep my eyes peeled. I was struck by how close you are to Sparkford and the A303, so wondered if he may have wandered on to the 303.............I gave your mum the number to check with the Highways Dept in case Bullet had been hit by a car, can you confirm that this call HAS been made, in view of the latest sighting?? Have you postered in the garages along the A303, and also MacDonalds at Sparkford (stick one on the poster board for the Drive-thru!) Please also poster at the Sparkford in as they are very dog friendly. Keep up the good work as the posters are paying off. We had a phone call today from a lady who thinks she may have possibly spotted Bullet running on the A303 on Wednesday night (26th Jan) about 11pm. She and her husband were coming home from Bristol to West Camel and said they saw a dog about the same size as a Golden Retreiver running in the opposite direction just before the road turns to a dual carrageway and then ends up at the Podimore roundabout they turnerd the car around and tried to call him but he ran away scared. He was light brown with curly fur. This could have been Bullet if he was wet from the rain. Bullet is friendly and would normally approach people but if he has been outside for a week he could be scared and acting funny. Does anyone know if any other dogs with light brown curly fur in the area are missing, just in case it wasn't Bullet? It seems a bit of a coincidence that there is another dog missing fitting this description. The lady thinks he may have headed for West Camel or Ditchett. She saw posters in West Camel today, so thanks again for your help posting those around.I will go out searching tomorrow and see if I can find anything. Thanks again for all your support. Thank you Swizzle you are a trooper! There is nothing like local knowledge. Lets hope for a sighting soon then xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
swizzle.
My husband saw a retriever in our driveway at 6am on Wednesday. To be honest it could have been a number of dogs in the village, or there is a slim chance that Bullet has made the journey north. We are about 3 miles south of Street on the road to Somerton and Ilchester. Queen Camel is at least 10 miles away. The dog ran away when my dogs went to say hello. I am postering and talking to farmers about Merlin today, so I will tell them about Bullet as well, just in case. JanLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

When was the sighting of a Golden Retreiver in Compton Dundon? I'm not familiar with the area where was the sighting? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you so much to all of you who have been helping us look for Bullet. We still have had no news yet. My Mum has been helping out, phoning around all the relevant places as my husband and I have to work. But no one has found him or had anything reported. I spoke to a lady at the weekend when I was out searching, who said she saw a Golden Retreiver in England'd lane, Queen Camel on Friday 18th about 11pm. I also spoke to another lady who said she saw one on Saturday near the Walnut Tree in West Camel. I have searched the river and the fields by the river from Queen Camel and West Camel. I have put posters in the shop and pub in Queen Camel, and still need to ask the church and school if it's O.K. to put one there too. I have told numerous people as I have been looking for him to spread the word and the local farmers are aware. I hope the next few days bring some good news. I will be out at the weekend again searching for him. I can't thank you enough for all your support.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Bullet could possibly be the dog that people are thinking is Merlin as a helpers husband saw a retriever on their driveway in Compton Dundon about the time people saw what could have been Merlin.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Suggest owners take posters to Paul Nicholls' racing stables at Ditcheat, they have hundreds of horses and ride around all the area, also staff live scattered about, maybe they could put up posters in the staff/tack rooms and in their carsLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Will take posters to Club tomorrow night and ask all members to display them where they live. This will cover much of Yeovil area. JanLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

No news on Bullet. He is well known in the local area and owner has been postering too. As Jayne says, Bullets "gran" is co-ordinating the phone calls/internet so hopefully she will be registered on here soon to let us know where she has contacted already. Help with postering locally wuld be very much appreciated!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Do we know if Bullet was taken, or has he simply wandered off? Also is the phone number correct, because it's not the right one for the Queen Camel area. I live about 2 miles away from Bullet - will be printing off posters shortly. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
