Taken from this website........The law states a dog must wear a collar and tag, which details the name and address of the owner, when it is in a public place. Even if the dog is microchipped it must still have a collar and tag. But sadly there are some people who appear to be a law unto themselves, and think that their dog will never go missing. This particular lady was walking 2, 6month old pups as well as the older dog............all off lead on the heathland. Rex is a slow, plod along dog......need I say more? I live in a lane used by dog walkers to the heathland, and it infuriates me when I see people walking their dogs off lead and along a public highway. Some do not even bother to take a lead with them, no matter how well trained a dog is, you just never know what they might re-act to.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Actually if you notice from being a dog lost regular, it is betwwe pup and 2 years that most go missing - ran off etc. older dogs only go if in a stressed siuation or chasing a bitch.

When I first logged into Dog Lost ( a working dog lost in London) I did not have a dog. Lucy, is now chipped. tagged (and tagged at all times).  Why is it not law that dog owners have to have their dog chipped - oh of course, no money in it!!!!

So glad Rex is home.  Ditto the comments below.  Owners need to be responsible and not have a dog off a lead without a collar / ID tag and pref chipped.  We are seeing this too often as well as elderly / young (weeks old) pups off a lead, it is totally crazy.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Good news, I have just been to see Rex's owner, and someone had found him wandering on his own and taken him to the Vets where fortunately he was recognised this morning. He is now back home. The moral of the story though, is that I cannot understand why some people walk their dog off a lead, without a collar and tag, and not microchipped or tattooed. If only Rex had had a collar with an ID tag on, he could have been returned straight away. Thanks to all admin staff etc for their kindness and help.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have printed some posters, will laminate them and put them around the area he went missing. Have also asked the owner for a photograph of Rex.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Rex is a much loved neighbours dog, he is a typical "Lassie" dog in appearance, and went missing about 1.15pm on 8th Jan 2009, on Etchinghill Heathland.  Border Collie Trust, Vets, Dog Warden and Police informed. They owners can be contacted on 01889 584117 or 07967125004Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
