Hi Caroline a black labrodor was found in Bletchingly. I know it is a long shot but this dog had been starved and beaten and the RSPCA as trying to find its owners. If you want anymore details please pm me and I will try and email them to you, with contact details. I am pretty sure it is a young lab, but might be worth looking into further. Let me know. Hi Caroline, my daughter lives in France and recently her dog Saffie went missing for three weeks. In that time she launched a one woman campaign to find Saffie and gained a lot of knowledge along the way despite only speaking basic French. Also there is a very good English speaking site - Christine aubertine@wanadoo.fr. Also I have recently read a book by Carol Drinkwater (t.v. star of All Creatures Great & Small) she lives in the south of France is very anti hunting especially boar hunting which seems to be a national sport. GEORGES NEW POSTER. If anyone would like Caroline's new poster of George (more colourful and striking when displayed) please e-mail me and I will reply with it as an attachment. It is the poster I sent to schools in Hamps., Berks., and Reading. I will also forward the covering e-mail I sent to schools with the poster. This will make it easier for you if you are thinking of doing the schools in your area (see my two postings yesterday). Many thanks in advance if you are thinking of doing this. SCHOOLS LIST SITE (ACCESS): People have had problems when trying to get lists of schools. Do this: (1) Go to link and ignore "Unfortunately the page you requested could not be found" (2) On left, click on "Schools Guide" (3) Top right, register with your e-mail address and a password (4) Go to required area of map or adjoining list of areas This should give you all the schools in your selected area with those schools with an e-mail adress show in bold typeLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi all (George's grandad here), I have had a lot of good responses from schools who have agreed to print off and display Georges poster (some inside and outside their schools and even also in their local towns/villages). I have done the South East area covering Hampshire, Berkshire and Reading. If anyone would be willing to cover their own area with a covering e-mail and Georges poster, you will find all you want on: http://www.schoolsnet.com/cgi-bin/inetcgi/schoolsnet/home/index-std.jsp You will have to register with your e-mail and password to get full access then you will be able to select your area from a map. On the list of schools you then get, the ones in bold type are the ones with e-mail adresses. School notice boards are read by many thousands of children of various ages - not to mention the staff. I'ts ROYAL ASCOT in a couple of weeks - event having been moved north to York. Races attract a lot of TRAVELLERS and we expect more around here at that time. Also with the event being further north than usual there will probably be more people coming down from the North East as its going to be nearer. (I live near York and I'm dreading it!!!). Hi Justine. George's chain-mail appeal. If you would highlight my appeal (15:58-21/5/05) and copy and paste it into your e-mail form (just the appeal text from "TO ALL DOG....." to ".....in anticipation", then, having copied it, and at the end of the message, click your cursor between ".....html" and "I thank you....." then press enter - this will make the hyperlink to George's poster page work. If you are referring to my posting of (19:45- 21/5/05) then it is just a case of e-mailing your M.P. stressing just how important it is for him to put his name to Early Day Motion 775 titled "Dog Theft" that he will be presented with. This is also addressed to everyong else to help the general cause.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

For those who are not sure what this is - here's an explanation which also shows just how important it is to 'bombard' your M.P. is if it is to have any influence: Early day motion (EDM) is a colloquial term for a notice of motion given by a Member for which no date has been fixed for debate. EDMs exist to allow Members to put on record their opinion on a subject and canvass support for it from fellow Members. In effect, the primary function of an EDM is to form a kind of petition that MPs can sign. The tabling of an EDM is a device to draw attention to an issue and to elicit support for it by inviting other MPs to add their signatures: an MP would not expect their EDM to be debated. MPs can also table amendments to existing EDMs. EDMs, amendments and names of signatories are circulated in the Vote Bundle, the daily working papers of the House of Commons. EDMs can often attract a great deal of publicity, and many people regard them as a gauge of opinion. Although the majority of EDMs are never considered for debate, the group of EDMs known as 'prayers' may be debated. Prayers are motions to annul or revoke Statutory Instruments, and include the form of words 'that an Humble Address be presented to Her Majesty, praying that the [title of legislation], a copy of which was laid before this House on [date], be annulled.' Hello again - George's Grandad here. May I ask as many of you as possible to copy my "chain-mail" e-mail appeal and send it out to everyone in your address book and anyone else you can think of. This would be a great help in getting it "snowballing" among the general public. Thank you very much. Here it is: TO ALL DOG LOVERS I have tried everything possible to locate my Black Labrador - Rescue Centres, Dog Wardens, Posters, Kennels, Dogs Lost and Found Web Sites. I have been in local newspapers and even on television - and I have offered a substantial reward. All to no avail yet. He could, by now, be anywhere in the Country. My last desperate attempt is to try to obtain help from any relevant source. When you have seen the enclosed poster, would you be so kind as to forward this to as many others as you can manage. If everyone helps in this way, the 'snowball' effect will get the sort of coverage that could get him back home. If possible, would you also be so kind as to print a copy of the poster and display it somewhere. Also, I would ask all recipients to ask themselves: Have I come into contact with a dog like this suffering from Epilepsy? Have I recently seen a large, abandoned, adult dog like this? Have I noticed someone who suddenly has such a dog? Has someone recently, innocently, purchased a similar dog? Do I know of a similar dog being offered for sale? PLEASE HELP. Please forward this on to as many others as possible. Your co-operation will go a long way to relieving my anguish and, hopefully, finding my dog. This e-mail is absolutely genuine and is not, in any way, a spoof or false. My contact number is on the poster. http://hometown.aol.co.uk/cmcmerritt/myhomepage/dog.html I thank you in anticipation. Just thought you all might like to see an answer I have just received from one of my e-mailings to M.P.'s: Early Day Motion tabled by Andrew Rosindell M.P. Tuesday 17th May 2005 DOG THEFT AND THE WORK OF DOG THEFT ACTION That this House expresses concern at the increasing number of dog thefts reported in the media; is further concerned that there is evidence of an organised trade in stolen dogs; notes that dogs are very special to the lives of thousands of people in Britain; urges all dog owners to look after the security and protection of their pets at all times; recognises the tireless work of Dog Theft Action and Doglost UK; and urges the Government and local government, vets, the Police, welfare organisations and rescue centres to adapt their procedures in favour of a more effective service that results in more dogs being re-united with their rightful owners. All Members of Parliament are urged to sign the motion. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Watcher, thank you so much for your lovely message. Don't worry, I have no intention of meeting anyone without any back-up, I just stupidly thought I might get that from the Police - DOH! On a good note, Meridian are filming us again next week for a documentary on dog theft, along with others, so that might bring some results - Watcher, can you PM me with your contact details so if I need that extra back up I can get in touch? Watcher
A formal complaint to the Police Complaints Authority would be in order although you would probably gain more mileage from contacting your local MP as extortion is illegal. A word of warning - NEVER meet anyone claiming to have your pet without a solid plan!. That would include a public meeting place, daylight, adequate backup (one friend is not enough however desperate you may be) and the ability to extricate oneself from the situation. Don't want to patronise but these people do not sell knitting patterns for a living. If you are contacted by someone who gives all the right answers and are confident they have your pet you should insist on having the plods present but hidden. If they are still not interested I can assist in provisioning requisite resources. I am more than impressed with the huge effort you and others are making and, having read your page in it's entirety, you deserve to be reunited. Good Luck. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It'll cost us ?75 each, but will be seen widely. Anyone interested, please PM me.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had yet more proof yesterday of just how useless Hampshire Police are. I had a call yesterday from a man claiming to have stolen George and demanding a ransom. I managed to stay calm (although I was shaking like a leaf!) and questioned him about how and where he took him from. It became fairly apparent that he didn't have George as all the information he quoted was what I had posted on his web page (i.e. George was taken from his home....etc) he said he'd stolen him from my garden and my house was a bungalow (wrong!). Anyways I called the police and spoke to them, I said this guy had either stolen George and was demanding a ransom, or else he was intending to rob me of the ransom money - either way intending to commit a crime. And what did they say - THEY TOLD ME I SHOULD ARRANGE TO MEET THE MAN - WITH A FRIEND, AND IF THERE WAS ANY SIGN OF TROUBLE TO PHONE 999!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok there have been a series of stabbings in Reading lately, and judging on the police reaction times around here (about 3 hours!!!) I would be dead in a ditch by the time they got there! They offered no help whatsoever, and there was I thinking that the job of the police was to serve and protect!!!! Is it any wonder that the crime levels around here are so high? Still amazed that they actually advised me to put myself in a potentially very dangerous situation with no back up. Caroline xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Got the posters Caroline. So far ive got 3 up. 1 my hubby is a carpet fitter, his boss as put 1 in his shop window. A busy road which is at traffic lights. Alot of people stop right outside on a busy route in a very popular place in Doncaster. Another which is a very good place. My duaghters boyfriend works in a garrage that fits tyers. Just round the corner from them is maybe the biggest gysie site in the area. He said they come in to have their cars vans etc worked on almost everyday. 1 in a popular local shop, my daughter is taking some to her high school, hubby is taking 1 to Doncaster football ground with him tomorow. He sits in a booth letting in the fans. Hes desplaying it there. Tomoro they are playing Stockport so it will be seen by people from Stockport also. The rest will be desplayed ASAP. Good luck to you all. SharonxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Jockette, a lot of these horse fairs are visited by rspca inspectors, you could make enquiries of them to see if they will be present as they carry scanners I think, the organisers may also have a vet on call or present at the event, you could ring them and ask, also ask local police if they will be there at all although I don't think police have scanners with them. I'm sure you would recognise Lilly. CandyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I bet that the scums that take the dogs look on here and follow our conversations and leads. I bet any money they do..... If they think we may be near to something good they are one step forward. The thing i have about going is if we do see one like Lilly, how would we go about it? Also, there are so many Border Terriers out there how would you know which one is yours? Hi Caroline, just picked up on this stuff about the Gypsy Fair. The one they're heading off to now is STOW FAIR. It takes place at Stow-on-the-Wold and is held every year on the nearest Thursday to 12 May and the nearest Thursday to 24 October. The May Fair is the big one! Around this time last year, when I got a 'tip-off' (it turned out to be the Travellers having a laugh at my expense) that Ralph was being held on a site on the Hants/Berks border, my friend and I went on the site and most of the men were away - they were going up to Stow Fair. This year, 12 May is a Thursday so that's the day to go! Hope this helps, take care. MLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It's not such a bad idea getting the bad guys on your side. Afterall some of them are animal lovers. My sister lives next door to a teenage lad who hangs around with gypsies. Hes always in trouble with the law. Last year my sisters tortoise went missing. Wed had him as children hes well over 30 years old now. Hes always lived in the same enviorment a very secure garden. Anyway many of the neighbours had seen this lad go in the garden and come out with a box with gypsies waiting out on the street for him. Being infront of everyone and in daytime nobody thought anything of it untill the tortoise was missing. In the same village was a bloke who's a little bit on the nuaghty side and soon got word out. In just a few hours of him knowing he took my brother-in-law to a house in the next village were they found the tortoise, hed been kept in a little carpbourd box for 3 days. They did have to pay ?30 to get him back as the man said thats what hed payed. The tortoise was very distressed by for a long time after, hes fine now. The police even though they were aware of certain people surounding this who had done similar things in the past did nothing. May I had there were a variety pets in the house they got the tortoise from that my brother-in-law said he thought could have been stolen. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Jockette, I have had the same reply from vets about scanning new dogs! if they are willing to microchip our pups for a fee then they should carry the system through and scan every new pup/dog that comes in as a matter of course. I would not take offence if my vet scanned my dog/cat/horses as I have nothing to hide and I would feel reassured that they were following the system through.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well, i have just been on the vet website and looks like you have to pay to view the database! She didn't tell me that on the phone earlier. Everything is money, money, money. These sick people take our dogs to make money. Need to find our dogs.... you need money at some point. It's true what they say... money - root of all evil. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Can't remember where i read the message about calling a certain number which is the RCVS and they will send you out a directory with all the vets in the country free of charge. I called them today.... ?60 if i want the directory sent to me!!! I just about pleaded with them not to charge me so she said that the website would probably be the most helpful to me. It would be quicker for me to get my message across to the vet practices country wide as it gives you areas in the uk to click on and then all the emails to about 500 vets in that particular area. But i asked her to send one out to me anyway.... but if there is an invoice with it..... she can have it back! Here is the website www.RCVS.org.uk You may well be thinking 'if someone brings a dog into the vets they would automatically scan it anyway' Apparantly from a vet in Oxfordshire that is not the case 'to my alarm!' He told me that if a new client comes in with a new pet then alot of vets do not scan as ....... (wait for this one).... it is considered rude to imply that the animal could be stolen. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!!! It left me speechless. (which is a rare thing i can tell you!) x x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Not wishing to dispute your information but are there TWO Appleby Horse Fairs? I know there is one up in Cumbria - APPLEBY HORSE FAIR 2005. Confirmed Dates 2nd - 8th JUNE. Carolines Dad
I felt I must put my oar in on this site to express my thanks to you all for the practical and moral help and support you have, and are, giving to Caroline. George is a lovely, soppy great lump and really loveable. Trouble is he is too trusting for his own good and would probably have gone willingly with anyone who was friendly towards him. I have followed this from day one and I can't overemphasize how impressed I am with you all and the dedication and work that the organisers of this site show. Please keep up the pressure to find George - and all the other dogs that have gone "missing". It really is a scandal and it is only by continual pressure from people like you that something will eventually get done. Being down in Penzance, I am limited as to what I can do but I am with you all all the way. Keep up your excellent work. Don't let the passage of time make you get despondent and disheartened. Keep going - it's the only way to get results.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hopefully the scanners aren't easily available. If thieves can locate chips in dogs, they will be able to remove them. Best thing to do if you want to check a dog you see with someone, is make a fuss of the dog, then ask its name, see if it responds, then try the name of the suspected stolen dog. George would definately respond to his name, as i'm sure many others would. Can you PM me with more details of the dog and who you saw it with pls. Caroline xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It's the not knowing that makes you scream inside isn't it. You just think the worst all the time, it doesn't matter that people say 'you should think they are with some lovely family somewhere'. my reply always is 'if they are that lovely why have they not reported that they have found a dog and handed her in' if they had done that then Dolly would have been home in a matter of hours and I wouldn't be losing my marblesLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

To be honest Candy, I would be slightly relieved if George was being kept by travellers, as the majority of them do treat their dogs well, the trouble is its always the nasty few that give the majority a bad name, i.e. those that steal dogs for fighting etc. Chances are as well that they'd give him up for a reward. I just wish I knew where he was and that he was ok. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Nice to hear you are not totally biased Caroline as most of the comments I've heard about gypsies on doglost seem to lump them all together as one bad lot, I know for a fact that there are some of the best people you will ever meet in the traveller community, but also some that are pure evil, but that goes for all walks of life doesn't it.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I made business size cards with a small pic of George on it and my phone number so i could just give them out to people while i was putting posters up, shopping whatever! DTA are designing flyers to give out, contact Laura (Lilly and Puzzle) or Justine (Alfie) if you'd like some to hand out. Having the multi poster on a t-shirt is a good idea - need to wait for the weather to warm up a bit tho! What about car stickers? I'm sure we could sell loads for, i don't know ?1 each to help bump up DTA's funds.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes, I've seen them on DTA and think it's a brilliant idea. But (thankfully) not having lost a dog myself I'd just like to support/promote your cause. I could use the PC and make something I suppose. As for cards could there be something on site accessible like the posters to print off, cut down and use? To make owners aware of the vulnerability of their dogs and giving them tips to protect them - not leaving outside shops, microchipping etc... - ValLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

If you link through to dogtheftaction.co.uk and go to merchandising the t shirts are available with your dogs photo on-she can take phot off this site and put what ever wording you like on a shrt. I think double sided are about ?8 and single about ?5/?6 each.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What about some supporters Tee Shirts - Something Like Dog Theft is a Crime - we want it treated as such (or something - that was just off the top of my head!). After all we see the council vans proclaiming that Dog Mess is Criminal (which it is) but as we know, often these people taking dogs are into other stuff as well. Jayne - is it worth having shirts available - I'd buy some. I also like the idea of a sort of postcard to distribute to fellow dog people highlighting the problem (did I see you with something similar at Crufts?) Many people I talk to haven't a clue that their pet might be at risk. "Its not a pedigree", "It's too old", and all sorts of other reasons. I approach every new dog walker I see now and have a chat. I'm probably getting the name of the local village idiot and her dogs! On another note, any canvassing MP or representative will certainly get his/her ear bent if they knock on my door.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Caroline - there is a dog show at South of England showground next weekend (Sunday 17th April) in aid of "Happy Breed Rescue". I think that it may be organised by Crystal Palace Canine Association (but not sure). It may be worth seeing if they would be happy to display some of your multiple dog posters - just a thought. It is possible that i would go (but not definate). If you want to send me a couple then i would happily put them up in my car as well. If you think that i can help then PM me and i will give you my address. ZoeLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Caroline, thanks for your message. I've pm'd you in return. For the saga of my experience with the Police, please see the entry for 26/3/04 , Saluki Dog, South East, RG7, under Dogs Reunited (it's umpteen pages back). Individual officers can be very good, but you get the impression that they are actively discouraged from investigating/pursuing cases too thoroughly. Best wishes, MmLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Meadowes, I've just found your page and your boy is very beautiful, I'm so sorry that you've not had any news, how can these dogs just disappear into thin air? Please read note below about Meridian TV, they're still looking for people to take part in this short film about dog theft. Even tho you don't live in the area, the dogs were taken from here so they may be interested, especially as yours is an absolute definate theft. I've pm'd you with the details. You never know, this might just do the trick, chances are he's living happily with people who've bought him unknowingly completely unaware how frantic you've been, and seeing him on tv might just prick their consciences. Best of luck, Caroline xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Caroline, I'm sorry but I haven't been following this for sometime. My boy has been missing for 13 mths now and I just find it too upsetting. My boy is a smooth-haired Saluki, Ralph, who was taken from my car on 14th March last year. Thieves smashed in the back window and took 3 dogs; one escaped shortly afterwards and was recovered; another was found nearly 2 weeks later on a Travellers' site, but Ralph is still missing. He's a lot older than your boy so I don't even know if he would have survived if they've mistreated him. The Police in general weren't much use although the Officer who was assigned to the case, and her partner, were very good. The Officer herself is a dog-person and she did a lot of investigating in her free time but it was all to no avail. It seems that the Police system discourages them from doing anything that isn't strictly related to an official 'target' and they really can / do turn incompetence into an art form! It's disgusting that dog theft is ignored like this - after all, we pay our taxes like everyone else and get nothing for it - I'm with you on the Downing Street idea. Forgot to add, my boy was taken from Mortimer / Beech Hill area (I'm not local, I was visiting), so it's just spitting distance from Wellington Riding. I gather it's quite a bad area for dog thefts. Good luck in finding George. Best wishes, M.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Caroline, that also bothers me i was wandering the same question. I think people would take them to the police station, i know some police stations close early every night but ours is open 24 hours, so i'm not too sure.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What bothers me is that if someone finds a stray dog on a friday evening once the wardens are closed, what does a non-dog person do? Especially if they don't have a local rescue centre or kennels willing to take the dog in. Chances are they'll off load it on anyone who is willing to take it, or be forced to let the dog loose again.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I couldn't agree more Marian.... The police just don't seem to care, but may be if they lost or had a dog stolen they would know how it feels, at the end of the day there just like us (humans) but some police officers think that there better than everyone else. Well dont know what else to say cause it really does annoy me. Take care. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I went to a point to point on Sunday and had a poster for Jake in the car, so I took it along to the stalls and got it put up for the day. Everyone was looking at it and of course, being country people, they are really clued up on dogs - worth doing if you have any near you. What is this about police and dogs - I thought they were supposed to be taking dog theft more seriously now. I do appreciate that found dogs should go to the dog warden, but surely the theft should be dealt with by the police.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Unbelievable about lack of help from the police once again. I could not agree more, why don't they seem to feel that catching thieves is their responsibility ?? We need some of the zero tolerance policing you hear about abroad as the type of people stealing dogs are certainly involved in other crimes and travellers sites seem to be no go areas for them ! I have already written to my MP (as per the DTA group website) but not sure what else us council tax payers can do to make the police take notice ! Good Luck with your search, I am keeping my eyes peeled for you and have seen several of your posters recently (unfortunately, there are so many black labs in this area I don't feel able to challenge someone with a similar looking dog)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This group have apparently turned up in Brighton, then moved on to Eastbourne. Their route would have taken them past our stables. We've had trouble with them in the past when they've cut through fences and tried to gain access to our land. George only had one way out of our yard - up the main drive and straight out onto the busy A33. He would've been killed if he'd got onto that road. And besides he had a collar and tags on at the time, so if someone had picked him up to 'rescue' him. My number was on the tag. Therefore I think he must've been stolen, whether it was by the gipsies i don't know, but its the best lead i have now.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am sorry that it was not George too. I must admit that i was going to say what Sarah said - you don't really hear of travellers targeting labradors but as you rightly said in an earlier post, you would never really know! I live about half an hour inland from Eastbourne so if there is anything that you think that i could do then please let me know.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Concentrating on the Brighton/Eastbourne area now, any helpers in that area, I'd really appreciate your help in putting up some posters in those areas. Still not heard from the people who were going onto the travellers sites down there to look around, dunno if thats good or bad news. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

In terms of advertising outside the football season, you could try the county shows, also locally in Bracknell, ice hockey gets huge crowds (yes, really). How about railway stations. Do you think there is any chance of a regular slot in one of the dog magazines, surely they must be prepared to help, there's Your Dog and Dogs Today (I think). Maybe half a page a month with a selection of photos ? I wonder if Petsmart would be prepared to put a large poster up in all their shops each week if they were contacted centrally. Anyone any good at PR ?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Og bugger, didn't think of that. Don't reckon Cricket will have the same effect somehow! Still, what about greyhound tracks and race courses? Anyone else have any ideas? Having several dogs on one poster will still get each of us more coverage than single posters, so i reckon its still worth a go. Caroline can I just say something important. Didnt really think of this at the time. The football season is coming to an end soon. When I asked Eddie about the idea he told me Doncaster only have 3 home games left. Just to let anyone know in the South East area whos looking for a lost dog, I'm putting together a multi dog poster to enlarge to A3 and then distribute with participants to local football stadiums. So far got GEORGE, ALFIE, LILLY, PUZZLE, MENO, MOLLY and JAKE. Got room for another 5. If you want to be included and can help in distributing let me know - cmcmerritt@aol.com or PM me on here. Including dogs name, age (now), breed, picture and reward amount. Contact number on poster will be doglost number. Have also got a lead on the travellers who were moved on from Reading when George was taken - they've travelled to Brighton, and on to Eastbourne (the route would have taken them right past my front door), so another kind helper has contacts who are going to look around the sites down there for me. If anyone who reads this lives anywhere near Coulsdon - its halfway between Redhill and Croydon, could i please ask them to see if they can find this poster - apparently its on a post box in the village. Guys would you believe I am still trying to talk at someone at this police station in Kenley. They didn't open until 11, and since then the phone has been on answerphone, I've left several messages asking someone to call me back - each one getting more insistent. I've even ended up talking to Scotland Yard and they've tried every number they have, but still no luck - what the bloody hell sort of crap organisation are they running down there??? If I hadn't had to work today I would have driven down and demanded they talk to me - but if Scotland Yard can't get an answer what bloody hope have I got??? Tearing my hair out here and trying very hard not to be totally abusive to this flamin answerphone! I've not told them what the call is about - just that its urgent - they obviously don't bother listening to messages! They close at 6.30 - so I've time for several more messages. Whatever the outcome of all this they are going to get a VERY STRONGLY WORDED COMPLAINT TO WHOEVER I NEED TO COMPLAIN TO - This is ridiculous!!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Marian, I'm going to did a bit deeper into the traveller situation tomorrow when the rest of the country comes back to life. I'm going to speak to the Travellers liason officer and get some info from them at to sites etc. Though my dog warden doubts that he was taken by travellers as they don't normally target labradors. Strange that, I thought they targetted anything that wasn't screweed down! As to the police, I think the main problem is that most stations have a 'book' that the lost or found dog is written in, and it doesn't actually get put on a computer database that other stations can look at. When I reported George, he was put in this 'book' and they refused point blank to give me a crime number as I couldn't prove that my dog had been stolen! How pathetic is that!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I so sympathise with you Caroline. I have done so much ranting over the last 5 weeks. You have to get past the person who answers the phone - this usually involved me having a tantrum - sometimes this worked and I found station sergeants quite helpful. I have just finished my official complaint letter to the police. I am thinking of you and George - did you ever find where those travellers went. I know I am a bit fixated with travellers, but it sounded fishy to me.Marian xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dee, believe me I ended up getting really stroppy with the police but they just weren't interested, I ended up being passed around from station to station, put on hold about 6 times (for about half an hour each time!), and only actually ended up talking to someone because he picked up my line by mistake when he wanted to make a call out! I was seething by this point and made him listen, but he insisted that there was no way I could find out about this dog until Tuesday - what more could I do? I've always been a law abiding person, but the incompetence of the police (well these ones anyway - I won't tar them all with the same brush!) makes me feel like a life of crime would be easy - especially in the Surrey area!!!!! Caroline - Still ranting and seething!! xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hang on Caroline (this is just me thinking out loud, not knowing anything about the law but knowing a lot about how it SHOULD be run...) anyway, each call to each police station MUST be logged on their computer system mustn't it? I mean if I had been burgled in your area and reported it to the (closed) station, I would expect to be able to ring the area station and still find someone who knows how to find the information on the details I gave the closed one... so why is it different in this case? We all know that the police don't record lost dog info properly but it has to be there somewhere and it has to be recorded... somewhere... they can't be telling you that the officers who man that station don't work the bank holiday - they must work other stations too when they're not there... see what I'm getting at?? You might have to be Miss Stroppy Knickers to the area station... but it might get you the info you're looking for?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What we need to develop is a tracker type device which is injected, like the micro chip, and which can be activated if a dog goes missing - surely if this was invented it would wipe out all cases of dog theft once and for all, and stray or lost dogs would be a thing of the past! Linda, thank you - tho warn her about a black lab that is allowed to wander loose around Farley Hill, just up the road from Swallowfield, I've had numerous phone calls from kind people thinking that they've found my George, only for it to turn out to be this other dog - one call was from a lady who nearly hit the dog in her car in the village (no pavements) at 10.30 at night, I've even spoken to the owner who was very nice, but still lets her dog out to wander where he pleases! I'm in the process of trying to obtain a database of addresses of every vet in the country from RCVS so that I can give them details of Georges epilepsy in the hope that when he has a fit a new owner would take him to the vet (his trigger and manner of fit is fairly unique!) - If I'm successful in obtaining this database I'm more than willing to use it to help others find their pets, watch this page and I'll let you know how I get on.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yvonne, George went missing from Wellington, he was last seen at midday on the yard, but as you know, Wellington is open to the public and anyone could have driven in and taken him from the car park as he's such a friendly dog. Thanks for reminding me about dog agility, i spoke to them all last night and everyone was really helpful. Meadowes, he has an identifying scar which would help me ID him, and also some very individual characteristics that might help! Keep your eyes peeled xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

My 3 Salukis went missing from around this area 1 yr ago (14 March 04). The oldest one is still missing. There are a lot of dog thieves in this area. Does George have any other form of ID? If he has been stolen, the thieves will remove his ID from his collar. Good luck in finding your boy.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am going to an agility class at Wellington riding stables on the Reading/Basingstoke road tonight, will take a poster and ask other owners to keep their eyes peeled. Where exactly did he go missing ? Do you think he ran off or was he stolen ? Good luck, he looks such a handsome chap.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
