Apologies for the long post, (AGAIN) and the long wait, but this is how we Brought Darwin Home.
From the beginning we have had overwhelming support and help in the search of Darwin who went missing on 29th September 2023. From the very first sightings, the initial search on the first weekend to the Sunday sightings firstly at Chalk Farm Lake then the A331 the community drive to bring Darwin home was strong.
This was to be our last confirmed sighting for 4 weeks! We had multiple feeding stations and drones up, ground searches and all to no avail. Salli Scott very generously loaned us wildlife cameras and monitored them for us day and night. Sue and I were traipsing into the woods feeding the local foxes their daily 'Deliveroo' (other food delivery services are available) but Mr D just never made an appearance! We had many possible sightings that generally turned into dead ends, or other dogs that were running loose.
We had started to think he'd been picked up, or gone much further afield... We fully launched our 'Too Hot To Handle' campaign with the help of Salli and Heather Driscoll-Woodford.
Sue was convinced however that he was very much still local but had found himself a perfect hidey hole!!! How right she was! She knows her dog well!!
On Monday 30th October we had a call only half a mile away from his A331 sighting of a big black dog running in the woods! Our hearts skipped and met the gentleman who had been walking his dog! We then had a second sighting in the same area saying they thought they could see him outside.
To our utter amazement Sue and I and another friend Cathy, all saw him with our own eyes in the very same woods a short while later! When he saw Sue, he had paused for a moment, but his survival mode had taken over and he retreated through the woods. Never underestimate that survivor instinct, the bond between Sue and Darwin is the strongest I've ever seen, but that survivor instinct had fully taken over him!
However we were so elated... he was alive and well!!!
We set up new feeding stations around the area again monitored by cameras lent to us by Salli. He visited all four of those stations over the next 24hours! We knew he wasn't just going to surrender himself, so we needed a trap. Through Amanda Wood-Woolley from Drones SAR, she introduced us to Solstice Missing Dogs, Karen and Jodie! They came straight from Wiltshire that Tuesday evening and helped up build the dog trap! We then started our 24/7 camera/trap watch with the help of many volunteers (Sue's friends) and Salli watching the cameras day and night whilst managing her family. Darwin however had other ideas about being trapped.
We were all at a loss as to what to do and were fast becoming extremely exhausted. Sue had pulled multiple night shifts with so many willing friends, too many to name! We were up against kids on mopeds racing through the area, kids setting off fireworks in the woods that scared Darwin away from the trap. Salli was driving 45 mins each way to help do trap watch all day and into the early evening.
Our D-dog proved to be a clever boy and dug a hole under the trap at the back and retrieved all the food that way. We modified the trap to seal the floor but he still attempted to dig. So, we went back to the trap site with chicken wire and covered the back area to prevent him digging! He continued however to not go all the way into the trap.
Eventually after 7/8 days Salli and Karen thought we might consider trying a bigger trap... we had 2

A comment added to a share on DogLost Hampshire on facebook just a short while ago.
'Don’t know if it relates but there was a black dog running down the hard shoulder of the A331 from Aldershot towards North Camp, two cars blocked the road with hazards on so it wouldn’t get hurt. This was today Sun 01/10/23 at about 1430/1445. I was travelling in the opposite direction but may relate, hope you find him!'
I have called the sighting inLast edited: 2023-10-01 17:57:19 by Gnasher - Area Co-ordinator, East Dorset
